The chaps over at

FiringSquad take an extensive look at what the upcoming DirectX 10 graphics API from Microsoft means for the future of PC games and graphics. The article also includes a pretty interestinf Q&A with Epic Games' programmer Tim Sweeney. Here is a taster:

At the moment, Crysis would be the reason I would upgrade to a new PC!

some more screenshots, to compare with the real world places they were based on...

There was a preview from Intel at i31 in Newbury, Crysis still looked amazing using DX9 under XP, got to have a play of it myself, this game is awesome :D

Indeed, the demo will let me know just how much I need to spend on upgrades (I've been planning to upgrade before I start university).

I'm hoping AMD will release some Barcelona parts in time, one of those should do nicely, if I get a Radeon 2900 also.

Why not an 8800GTX? Because my brand loyalty lies with ATI, always has.

Does anyone worry that Crysis maybe not be all hyped up, to what its ment to be ?

I must say, it looks awsome. But imagine If it was a total failer !!!?

lol,i dont think no game has ever tured out what it is supposed to look like. But you got to remember for you to get good graphics you need a high powered graphics card.

You mean just like Crytek's last game; FarCry? Because it was basically all graphics, no substance? Yeah, it's a very real issue.

Hey now come on - it's a strategy that's worked for ID for years!!!

Only recently have id Software begun churning out crap.

Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake were all excellent.

Quake 4 & Doom 3, however... Ewww...

Recently?

The last game ID did that was worth wasting my precious precious time on was Quake 2.

Quake 3 was only good for multiplayer (awesome engine though) and everything since has been a disappointment...

Although I actually played and quite enjoyed Daikatana :D

Quake II was pretty fail also, compared with its \"predecessor\" (quotes, since the game really isn't in the same series at all, just branded with the same name to generate sales)

Quake III did have good multiplayer, but again, why with the Quake name? I'd really love to see a real Quake II, with a return to the fast-paced action of Quake's single player. Gothic architecture coupled with science-fiction and big fat dollops of H.P. Lovecraft-inspired fantasy. Mmm-mm.

Don't get me wrong - Quake was epic and kept me up 'til waaaay past midnight when I was 14.

Quake II may have had very little to do with Quake - but it played pretty similarly and looked superb.

Quake III ruined the single player gameplay and gave us arguably one of the most revolutionary game engine around.

However - it didn't offer anything new in terms of gameplay - if anything it was a backwards step from Quake II.

Quake IV was cak and Doom III was just an engine with some demo tagged on to showcase it's abilities.

Back to the original topic though - I enjoyed Far-Cry because it used the power of the engine to do things that other games didn't.

I hope Crysis does the same - the moving trees and proper volumetric clouds and such do look stunning - but will they add anything to gameplay?

Biggest breath of fresh air I ever got was Deus EX - it may look poor but it was properly involving (once you got past the first level) and actually did a lot of things that other games have struggled to do since then - it had a proper feel that it wasn't linear - it had 4 endings!!! - everyone may be babbling on about Bioshock (which I do enjoy playing) but it only has two endings based on one decision int he game - not as advanced as Deus Ex that I was playing in college!!!

Hopefully Crytek will use the power they've got available to them and make something that's more Paris France than Paris Hilton...

if you like games with multiple endings get the suffering, that game was awesome, 3 endings, horror, gore, a spooky vincent price-esque ghost of a psychiatrist, that game had it all
