AAAAGGHHH!

My new shiney computer has stopped working again.

Its not recognising the hard drive on boot up, and says select proper boot device.

There are no disks in any drive, no usb sticks plugged in, and the hard drive is not selectable from the boot menu.

Advice while I wait to get through to customer services again?

Checked power cables? If you have had this pc made for you, dont open or you will void ur warrenty. What hard drive is it? might just have gone kaput.

Aria authorised me to open the case and check the leads - sure enough, one was loose, and I'm up and running again.

Woot!

Good stuff, I was almost at the point of suggesting a quick dose of /fixboot or /fixmbr

(2 of my favourite DOS commands)

Hia

I assume it was the SATA Cable that was loose.

let me know if it happens again and I'll get a 'clippy' one posted out to you

The clippy cables are new but I guess they will become standard soon

Basically they have a little leaf spring on them which secures it in the 'socket'

one confused me recently as I couldn't figure out why I couldn't pull it out
Looked at it from a different angle , saw the leaf spring , squeezed it and thought kewl, wish I'd of thought of that

David (if it was you I spoke to) thanks, and sorry for cutting off on you, in my rush to fix it I turned off the mains, then remembered my phone was plugged into it too....

And yup, it was the SATA cable, but fingers crossed it'll be fine now :)

Its still working fine after booting, but is taking a while to post and load windows. It sits for a while 'thinking' when it gets to memory checking before it announces that the 2 gigs are fine (is this just me not used to delays associated with checking dual channel mode memory?), and then after the windows loading screen finishes (or am I just being impatient?).

Suggestions to ease my paranoia?

you could check your bios to see if it has a \"quick boot\" or \"fastboot\" option, cuts out many checks etc.

should take between 30-60 sec to get to ur desktop / your logon page if its pass protected i think :)

if its longer than that id be worried. :) hehe

Takes about 30secs to get past the ram check, then roughly the same again to load the logon screen.

Back to the original problem, the sata cable slipped again, telling me I had no hard drive :S

For the ram, change its slots and rearrange them, so (i assume Dual channel) swap over. For the sata cable, i think u need a clippy one send 2 u.
