View Full Version : Anyone know anything about TomTom?

I have a TomTom ONE Regional v2. Recently, when left idle, it's been hanging and then restarting. Not sure how long it lasts before hanging, but I'd estimate about 10-20 minutes, perhaps half an hour sometimes. After restarting, it will have lost my route, which renders it pretty much useless, because you don't really touch it while driving.

I also find that when trying to plot a new route, it'll hang and then restart when I access the "Browse Map feature to find my destination. This also happens when the TomTom displays the map location of a particular place to confirm that it's the right one. It also freezes and restarts when in Demo mode.and when viewing the route summary.

TomTom tech support want me to send it in for repair, but I'd rather not do that if at all possible. Turnaround is about 2 weeks for a repair.

So, anyone got any ideas?

Yes, I've tried:
- installing newest version of HOME
- installing newest version of the application for my device
- backing up my device and formatting
- "soft resetting" by shoving a paperclip into the hole on its underneath, after removing the SD card obviously
- most combinations of the above

Send it to them then.

Yeah, I'd send it in to them..

The only other thing I'd maybe try doing (not sure if this is possible) is updating the firmware on the TomTom Unit itself, rather than the TomTom Home stuff on your PC? But I'd almost definitely send it in..

How long have you had it? Could you take it back to the shop where you got it?

I can't remember how long I've had it, so I probably can't take it back. Got it from Tesco. TomTom HOME always checks for firmware updates when you connect it to the PC anyway, I think. Not sure if it's the same thing though - it's called "TomTom Application for ONEv4".

And I just realised that the device versions don't match. I have the ONE v2, and the application for the ONE v4, but that's what was automatically downloaded for it using HOME.

I have a go 530 & tbh from my exp with tomtom problems you have done all that you can.
I solved a problem by removing the memory card once, tomtom's are random as feck.

Well I've finally gotten round to sorting this thing out. I rang up their customer support on Friday to find out how much the repair will cost, even though I don't think they'll be spending out any money except for the labour. They couldn't confirm on the phone, nor o nthe website, how much it'd cost. Apparently I have to send it off and wait for a quote, but only if i don't have my proof of purchase.

Well, I don't have the receipt, but I do have the bank statement from 2007 with the transaction on it. They said that the bank statement should be sufficient proof of purchase, the statement doesn't actually show anything except that I made a transaction at Tesco in 2007. I don't see how that is sufficient proof.

You have probably had your quote by now? But I wouldn't buy Tom Tom. They rip you off. I used to have one but not again. Either buy something else or nick the software for your mobile phone. That way you are clear of their lousy rip off service. They are on a par with Sky for any honesty or service.

Sent it in for repair, got it back exactly as it was. When I asked why, they said it's not actually them who fix it. They send it to a repair centre. So I think they didn't actually have a clue what was wrong with it and just followed their own set procedure, which didn't work.

So I sent it in a second time, but this time I included a log of all the problems I've had with it. When I got it back the second time, it had been reverted to its original settings and its original firmware, but at least it worked. Now I've backed up the contents of the device onto my PC in case I have to revert back to that, and tried installing all the updates since that version of the firmware, and now have the latest firmware for it, and it still appears to work fine. So all's good now.

I'm a bit sceptical about spending out the money to get a new, updated map and speed camera info though. It's telling me that my map is out of date and my safety camera subscription has expired, but I'm not sure if I want to spend out the extra money on a new subscription and map. The roads around here barely change at all, and I know the ones that have. The only time I'll need it is when I go to London, but I prefer to take the train to London instead.

Get the subscriptions if and when you need them - no point wasting the cash for the local area.
