View Full Version : Can windows 7 finally kill XP?
Verdict on windows 7? XP beater? Better game performance?
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=109418
Could be... if they get the compatibilty and reliabilty sorted 100% for release
How can something such as an OS be 100% compatable out of the box, its never gonna happen
And Vista has already killed XP in my eyes, sure XP is still good, but vista improves on everything in XP
Vista - 7 - XP (worse to best) IMO

a few examples please !
If Vista "killed" xp why did mico$oft extend the shelf life of xp?
the release of netbook machines has shifted a good few copies of xp.
Vista = Windows ME
Theres a game I play... works fine on XP wont run at all on Vista- this is the one reason I refused to get rid of XP completely.

Not tried Windows 7 yet so cant comment.
Vista works and p's over xp imho
nothing i cant do in vista that i could in xp and can do more in vista than i could in xp.
dont understand peoples issues at all. I've not had 1 issue with vista in 12months and i'm running it on a laptop.
I still point to the fact that people were hesitant to goto xp when it first came out and that some people still havnt gone to xp because it was supposed to be garbabge. People's issues are more to do with reluctance to change rather than anything else. and if something doesnt work for you doesnt mean its rubbish and everyone else should stay away from it. it just means wasnt for you but might be perfect for someone else.
OK rant over.
I got vista on day one of retail release :P

I agree with you, for years people hated XP, now everyone wants to keep it.
I went to XP on day on of release too... and 95... not sure about 98 though.

someone is easily pleased :D
But about a week after I installed Vista, XP was back on my machine.

A WEEK!!!!! hardly time to try and get used to something u not think....
but if u have a perticular prgramme/game that u must use that was programmed for 98/xp then fine valid reason for not persevering with vista.
It was slow, driver support wasnt there, and didnt work with half the stuff I wanted to run :P

standard microsoft support then :D
I may try and install windows 7 on my old 13gb external HDD to try it out :)
Its not killing XP for me.. Or Vista for that matter - I've not had any real problems with Vista, but then I don't really ever buy a 1st generation of anything for that reason. Let the early adopters get all the bugs worked out, and then go for the 2nd generation/release with a service pack. Its been absolutely fine on both my laptop and my main PC, and very rarely crashes.
The main reason Win7 isn't killing XP or Vista yet, is that I still cant get the thing installed! :( I had a pre release Beta which someone gave me which I was running through a Virtual Machine in vista, but thats not really a good test.. Downloaded another official Beta last night tho, so will try installing that later on today and see what happens! :)

Hmm.. That'll be an interesting test..
Minimum recommended specs call for:
1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
1 GB of system memory
16 GB of available disk space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
DVD-R/W Drive
Internet access (to download the Beta and get updates)
I created 30gig partition, it has 17 left
Yeah, I was genuinely meaning it'll be an interesting test - wasnt sarcastic!
Well, I'm sure i'll find out for myself if I ever get mine installed... ;)
Cant understand why people are having problems with the same file I downloaded...
a workmate got his installed in 10gig LOL
My only gripe with Vista is that Red Faction, Theme Hospital, and a few older games in the Valve Complete Pack such as Half Life and Counter Strike don't work. That's all.
From best to worst:
7 possibly > Vista > XP
I've got the beta release of 7 but a lot of the differences I've already reverted ack to Vista. Like, I can't stand the new taskbar. I like to be able to see the names of the programs, rather than just the icon. Vista didn't resemble a MAc as much as people claimed IMO from my limited experience of Macs, but 7 has a very strong resemblance if you ask me, especially with the new taskbar.

I'd imagine its located on quite a few different servers, all serving the same files.. I guess if one has a corrupt copy, it would only affect a small percentage of users, but would still cause problems..
what gets me is that it would of been vista sp2 if it wasnt for all the bad press vista has gotten.

I hope you ran disk clean afterwards... cleaned up loads on mine when you delete all the after installation ****

What a great game that was :D

Could it have been since it looks so completely different though?

If its so similiar whats even the point in it! LOL
Vista had the *groundbreaking* aero, what does 7 have to make me part with £70 ?
for example win 98 to XP was like night and day.
Try it for yourself... I'm sure it'll convince you :)

I have found that W7's media centre likes my 3010ix TV card a lot more than Vista's does.
It finds all the channels in one go (takes 3 or four goes with Vista and the PC in different places I know its wierd).
and I believe that I can also use the analouge side of the card (not that I have worked out how yet!)
I think its quite likely it would have been SP2.. Especially as when I ran CPU-Z and Everest on the pre public beta version someone gave me, it told me it was Windows Vista Ultimate..

but that could be due to M$ using V6.1 instead of V7
Yeah true.. What does it say when you run something like cpu-z on the latest release?

I only had v1.45 so i grabbed v1.49 and it also shows Vista (6.1) ultimate Edition (build 7000)

Just checked an old build of Everest (v4.00.976) also shows as Vista :D
Maybe that'll be changed in the release version

M$ have made it clear that it will be version 6.1.
the problem, I guess, is that the software is checking the Version number and if V6.x reports it as Vista
Maybe CPU-z programmers will fix that
I think it should be a service pack myself, not enough improvements to call it a new release and have to fork out a load more money
That said, i do think its very nice and works quite well so far
obviously in future windows 7 drivers will come out too, although the vista ones work anyway
I agree with that - I think M$ should at least offer some sort of discount at least to users who can provide a valid Vista serial number and proof of purchase..
