View Full Version : Shed's possible first build.
What does everybody think as this for a possible £400 (cause I'm a cheap skate) system? I would OC the CPU to about 3.6-4.0GHz.

I think the CPU is probably a bit overpowered looking at the rest of the spec, not sure how good that mobo is for OC'ing anyway.
Think your clock is a bit fast :P
Shed admit your 8400 was a bad mistake!!! go on do it!
Theres nothing wrong with my 8400GS, I can play COD4 30FPS...perfect for me :D
I'm just bored and have spare money so i wanna build :P
@ Jonwoad...my clocks abit fast? You can overclock the e8400 to 4.4GHz still on air cooling, and can OC to 3.6GHz which out voltage change =]
@alexnifty my gfx card is about the same if not better than a 8800GTS, what cpu would u recommend?
I would reccomend a E8300 or E8200, get a better motherboard and a better gpu. You will need a new monitor too.
What about a E7200 http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/CPUs+%2F+Processors/Intel/Core+2+Duo/Intel+Core+2+Duo+E7200+2.53GHz+(Retail+775)+?produ ctId=31114
and overclock that to 3.2GHz seems to be easily able to do, and what graphics card should I get? What is wrong with a 1GB 4670? This is a £400 build...money doesn't grow on trees :P
1GB on a 4670 is useless, its like a guy who is disabled from the waist downwards having the most powerful muscly legs in the world... useless! Go for a 4830 at least.
Get a XFX GTX260 Core216 Black and wait a few more years and buy the rest of it!

I would be surprised if that board will alow much, if any, overclocking
Omg, this isn't getting me anywhere. Ok everybody (if you please) make me a computer spec (from parts on aria) that costs £400 :) (use the same case as I had, cause its cheap and looks cool8))
Edit: OMG the 4760 out performes a 8800GTS, I clearly must not know anything about computers if people are tellin me a 4670 is p o o >_<
Assuming you want gaming / overclocking capabilities £400 is going to be a bit of a push.
I'll see what i can come up with.
Update, will this do? You can only cut cost so much. This will offer some scope to upgrade things like the cpu / storage later, i think the most important parts should be of as high a quality as possible from day one, ie mobo, psu as these are the main building blocks to any system.

Should make for a pretty ****ty PC :P
That is so unbalanced, a really slow cpu paired with a poor overclocking mobo, then a 4850.
Exactly! Perfect for shedlife!
LOL!
Going off toms hardware link i posted a while back a GTX 260 with a £20 CPU eats crysis for breakfast! (sort of)
the results concluded
good cpu + ok gfx
and
good cpu + good gfx
are OWNED by
budget cpu + high end gfx
heres the link, clearly shows budget cpu's (even AMD X2's 4000 etc) when paired with the GTX are owning. It shows GPU is still king. So forget the E8400, get a E2220 OC it and get a GTX 260/4870/4850 depending on final cost!!!
I lack knowledge on motherboards i know that =] so reaching over 3GHz is basically what I want. Remember I'll be playing on a 1024x768 res (I've not really played on higher res except 1400x(sumit else) and I didn't notice the difference. Is a 4830 really necessary to play COD4? I play it now totally fine on a 8400 ;)
Is the E2200 good? Better than one of them AMD 6000+?
If you aren't going to overclock much (or at all) then get the AMD 7750 and simply up the fsb to 220ish (for 3ghz) and it will see off the 6000 as its based on a Phenom core and has more cache than a standard X2. Check out some reviews of the 7750 they tend to compare it with 5000/7000/8000 core2's so that should give some idea of how the 2200 will fair.
The low end intels need quite a bit of overclocking to make them worth while, noi, but if you can't push them to 50%+ overclocks then i wouldn't recommend them for you.
I got mine upto a 50% overclock, can get maybe 52% at a push.
I've never had a c2d that didn't get to 50% tbh, with a bit of persuasion, but not everyone has the knowledge to do it, noi.
Your C2Q needed a fair bit of nudging by the sounds of it. I might get a new cpu soon, new gfx too!
Yeah its not an amazing overclocker in the big scheme of things but 3.6ghz will do ;), even if it did take a bit of voltage to get it stable, sometime water cooling does come in handy.

GTX 260? :chairfall:
HD4850 is more my budget.
And it will crash every 10 minutes! :P
Seriously, i go on google earth for a few minutes and my computer crashes, i have no idea whats causing it
monkey you hate ATI now! LOL almost as much as myself ;)

What the hell is a AMD 7750? :P
Edit: I see now :P ummm aria don't sell any tho :(
Unfortunately they don't :thumbsdn: but i would recommend one over a 6000 as they are simple to get to 6000 speed and they have alot more cache and better architecture.
Mine with very little effort (make sure the ram is set to the appropriate settings and up the fsb to 222, job done.

Where could you buy one of them babies from?
Now now you must use your initiative you know i cannot post links to competitors.
Oh yeh I forgot sorry...just a quick update, they must of updated COD4 since the demo to the real game cause the performance of the full game (arrived 2day) fricken OWNS :P around
average: 40FPS
min: 25FPS
Max: 100+FPS
Online with about 30 players its constant 60FPS

Yeah, they do that.. Normally they add a few more levels too.. ;)

try turning the textures up from low and report back! :chairfall:
Textures don't make a difference at all on modern cards, just shading/lighting effects =]
I have all gfx on top except 0xAA, and no shadows...on 1024x768 res :) anybody want screenshots? -_-

In Crysis high textures are DX10 textures, below this DX9. A lot of cards fall over in crysis with high textures. :P
Textures are far more demanding than visual effects :P
I certainly can see an FPS difference when going from low, medium, high and ultra high textures!
It's all to do with the memory bandwidth on your card. Then add to that the texture sharpening processes like Anisotropic Filtering.
for me on crysis I can have textures on full and its fine 30fps average (on DX9) its just shaders and shadows that result in poor performance on games (for my 8400Gs anyway ;))

try textures on ultra high
The best I can go is custom high, which are graphical settings that have been modded to be more demanding/better looking. I don't think it'll be as gd as DX10 high textures tho :D
