During a Firework party for the kids last night two of them managed to pull the drawer clean out of my DVD Reader. Is it possible to slide it back in? Is it worth trying or should I just by a SATA DVDRW instead?

Can anyone recommend a decent model.

Cheers Guys.

I would take the drive out open it and see if it might slot onto the mechanism if it don't go , I'd go for a pioneer drive , one of the fastest and reliable drive

and I'd open it before buying a new one you got nothing to loose

If it was me, I would just buy a new one. They're not expensive. Most DVD drives nowadays don't have much difference between them except for their noise level. Personally I've always preferred Lite ON drives but they are apparently the noisiest of the lot, and yes they are noisy. I can't really recommend any other brand on experience though, because I've always used Lite ON.

they probably have broekn a bit off allowing it to go all the way out. it might work if you put it back in but it might spit the tray at you when you eject though.

You mention buying a SATA DVDRW instead. Does this mean the old one is IDE?

If so, SATA would be more convenient. But check that you have a spare SATA port and power connector in the PC.

Yeah, buy a new one if it was old it would just die in a year or so anyway /
or you could try and slide it back in.
it should work

Lol that would work. I am considering a blu ray drive though as hoping to get a new monitor for xmas. But then would i really use it as i got a 3d tv and blu ray player for the main room. Decisions decisions...

They are easy to fix, my daughter knocked mine out twice, I use L.G. they seem fine and you can pick them up for £11.99 delivered.

It's amazing how the price of DVD drives has fallen, you can pick any up for probably under £30 if that.

I'm not sure about Blu-Ray, still early on in it's technological life. Might wait it out for new technologies etc.

And there are even cheaper drives around.

But at that price. why bother?

The stock DVD drive in my desktop sounds like a hurricane filled with wasps and helicopters. If I actually used the drive even on a weekly basis I would consider a replacement but the thing sits sullen and unused :)

Perhaps it is moaning and groaning because it wants to play with its friends.

I assumed it was for UrKo as well, I don't have IDE on my mobo anyway so I can't take it off your hands either ;)

You can open it up and try to fix it yourself, or you can pick up a new sata one :) . Rom's aren't that expensive these days.

It would be fun to open and take a look if you could fix it. Maybe there's a plastic piece broken off the tray. I think that's possible.

OMG , just realized this is a bump of an old thread :|
