View Full Version : Optical drive power consumption: any reviews or user tests published?

I believe 5.25" ODDs are very power hungry and very much a weak link if you're trying to build a power efficient system, but there's almost no data available re power consumption! nothing in manufacturer specs and only a handful of very old articles (e.g. Tom's Hardware) So far the best options I can see are to use laptop or external ODDs, but there isn't any comparison of those either.

Has anyone see any recent tests or comparisons? or done their own testing?

Isn't it about 40W when its burning and 10 - 15 idle ??

I think that's pretty close to the numbers I had in the back of my mind for 5.25", not really ideal if you're using a picoPSU or similar, and frustrating in that it double the idle power of a entire low power Sandy Bridge system.

Yeah thats only off my head though, a slim (laptop) drive would be a lot lower, less than half i reckon.
