XP Pro will still only go up to 3.5gb approx, you need 64 bit operating system to use all the memory in the system, and XP 64 driver support is patchy at best. You're better off with Vista 64

To answer your question, COD Modern Warfare and COD World at War aren't the most demanding of the current generation of FPS games by a long shot. The 9600GT will be fine with the current COD games for anything below 1600x1200 resolution. The GTX is obviously the better card, but if Call of Duty is really the most demanding thing you'll throw at it then save yourself the money and go for the 9600GT.

Mind you things move along pretty quickly, and you probably won't be able to play the next Call of Duty games or similar at the same settings - so if you can budget a little more for a better card it might well be better than having to shell out again in a year or so's time.

Here's some benchmarks for reference.

(The 9800GTX is equivalent to the 8800GTS 512MB, for a useful comparison)

I would go for the HD4870 for a little more money will give a lot of performance.

I would get vista 64bit, Xp will work, but its like throwing half one of your sticks away, 500mb of it will be useless, and you wont get full DX10 effects, only DX9 on Xp. I am on 32bit vista atm, and im stuck with 500mb of my ram useless till i get a new OS, i wouldnt reccomend you make the same mistake.

ok so you guys know what you are on about BUT i am not so up to date with the gen so i am running an old athlon single core and 1gb of ram, the system will give me quad core and 3.5 gb ram if i use my xp pro, will i realy notice the diffrence??????

I just made a painless ransition to vista 64 from vista 32, everything works. Ony thing I had to work out was my wireless card drivers, but I did sort it after a quick google.

Everything else works right off the bat.

My problem is that im OEM, i dont think im allowed to change to 64bit.

alexnifty

How do you mean? My vista 32 was OEM bought from aria with my original build. Right now I'm dual booting 32 and 64, both OEM on the same machine.

If you've got XP Pro, that'll be fine.

Regardless of what people are saying above, there's no need to go spending more money at the moment when XP will do everything you need. Yes, half a Gig of your RAM will go unused by XP, but 3.5GB is more than enough for anything you're doing!

The only real reason to push on to Vista at the moment is the DX10 option for gaming. Mind you, if you go that route you would need to go for a better graphics card again, because DX10 is very resource hungry. The last two COD4 games look great in DX9 though, so if that's your limit at the moment.

Often, the trouble with asking questions on graphics card forums is that a large section of the contributors are hardcore gamers, most of which are FTW oriented and easily forget about FTB!!!

(For The Budget, by the way ;)).

Ahh but is it XP Pro 32 or 64... if its 64 driver support is still lacking!

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with most of the gfx card advise. The 9800 blows the **** out of the 9600. ESPECIALLY when your comparing these two systems i take it?

http://www.aria.co.uk/Systems/Gaming+Range/Trident/Gladiator+Trident+Partner+?productId=31120

and

http://www.aria.co.uk/Systems/Gaming+Range/Trident/Gladiator+Trident+Performer+?productId=33217

If you spending £500 on a system you will game on, to get one with a 9600gt is simply ridiculous! (£200-£250 build i'd let you off) The gfx card is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT item on a machine which will play games even if only occasionally. Stuttering and poor framerate kills any enjoyment in a game as does having to lower important visual settings. COD W@W looks stunning with everything turned on and full Anti-Alias and Anisotropic Filtering. You will move onto other games which will bring the 9600 to its knees.

£75ex extra gets you a card which will cope with ANY top 10 game on good gfx settings - also better CPU and bigger harddrive. No brainer

£75 extra over a year is only £6.25 a month for a balanced system. 9600gt in a £500 system is like a ferrari with a skoda engine.

No arguments here, looking at the full specs.

If those are indeed the two systems in question, then the Performer is more than worth the extra for the graphics card, faster CPU, and bigger HDD. I would also revise my opinion on the OS and say go for Vista 64bit for those specs - but would also say they are serious overkill for "call of duty games, playing some music and internet".

A faster dual core system with a better graphics card would make more sense for the original poster's needs...

If you want to keep playing the COD series, and lets face it they are gonna churn em out forever, then you will want a good GPU as the current Engine will be replaced eventually.

And you'll be using a last generation, or generation before that, GPU on a current generation game.

Unless you stay behind the curve on games too.
