need some help to make decision

hi,
i need some help making decision.

i have a laptop and it is an entry level laptop
it is toshiba L40-15C-vista basic

now, i can't decide if i should upgrade the memory and hard disk of it or sell it and buy a new better laptop.
i will be using it for college assignments.
im looking 13"-14" screen size.

budget:£300

1 more gb of ram and see how it runs if it much improved keep it, if not much better sell it and getting another,
