View Full Version : Suspicious Browser Behaviour

Hi, whilst I was away from my comp, I ran an Adaware scan.

Anyway, when I returned, I tried to start my browser (Firefox) but my system said it was already running. I looked into processes and there it was consuming 220,000KB of ram; this would be like having 4 tabs open at the same time, right?

Any reason to be anxious or just Windows being clunky?

Firefox sometimes does this, just close and start again

Mine does this a lot, as Pancake said really.

Yes, sometimes it fails to remove itself properly; although I havent had that issue in quite a while.

Current version of firefox seems to have some memory leaks, there's been some noise about it recently.

You can say that again, I had firefox open yesterday, pretty much all day, with just 2 tabs open. it was taking over 850MB when I happened to check my memory. Maybe it's time to look for a new browser.?

Firefox has had memory leaks since version 3.0 XD.

Just close it and open it again.

There are some things you can do to stem the tide as it were but you can't fully stop the problem.

Apparently its on the list of things to be fixed for firefox 7

generally, this tends to be caused by Flash and it's not the browsers fault :(

Flash streaming audio and video is the culprit most of the time, or in my case on some games I play the flash based IRC client. Flash retains all data that is has received on the stack, and doesn't clear that as it's too busy processing the newly received data. Some players get around this by starting a new stream and cross fading the only stream/process so that the stack can be cleared.

Not a lot that can be done about it unfortunately, what sites were you viewing previously? Be honest, a lot of these memory leak issues are caused by porn popup windows, the streaming webcam type. We've got accustomed for using a tech (flash) for something it honestly wasn't designed for.

what sites were you viewing previously? Be honest,

If this was aimed at me, then I will be totally honest, I have a folder in FF favourites titled morning, which I open in the morning using the open all in tabs option.

I then read each site and close the tab, leaving the last 2 open for most of the rest of the day. Here's the list for anyone interested,

BBC Wolves (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/football/teams/w/wolverhampton_wanderers/default.stm)
BBC SPORT Football (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/default.stm)

So 850MB still seems a lot to me.

most have a little flash on them, but nothing really streaming, perhaps the advert banner, but it's normally online radio streams that cause mega memory usage for me.
