View Full Version : GFX Card Advice.
Hey Guys,
Ive recently put together a nice little set-up but due to lack of funding (credit bill having to be paid), I haven't Put a Graphics Card in it yet. I was just wondering which card would you recommend?
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM: OCZ PC8500 Reaper
MOBO: Asus P5Q-E iP45
HDD's: 2x500GB Seagate Barracuda in RAID 0
Also with antec 900 gaming case, Artic Freezer 7, couple of 22x DVD drives. Dell 23" monitor, and OCZ StealthXStream 700w PSU.
I would probably spend anywhere from £100-£200 on a GFX card. Any suggestions. Uses:CoD4, CoD5, Crysis, C&C RA3...etc.
HD4850 for light gaming, or HD4870 1GB for heavier gaming.
i concur 4850 gives a lot of bang for little buck.
although if your running native full res on that 23" 4870 1gb or gtx 260 maxcore 216.
yeah i was thinking along the lines of a 4870 alrite. Will the 700w PSU be enough to power it along with the rest of my set-up?
Also (might as well ask while im here), Is there much difference between say, a 4870 dark knight, a 4870 sapphire or club 3d 4870 etc...? Is there one that you would recommend out of these? any that u would warn off?
tyvm for help and quick responses:)
The 1Gb version is the better version. Apart from that its just vendor differences.
yeah they're all 1gb version with the same specs (clock speeds etc.).
Thanks for the advice :D
Get one that has the best cooler for your needs, one that draws in air and dumps out the back is best if your airflow isnt the best.
I dont think airflow should be too much of a problem. The Antec 900 has 2x120mm fans on the front for intake, a 200mm and 120mm on the top/back for extracting. plus the PSU. Plus it has a mounting on the side panel for another 120mm fan.
and i have the 4 case fans running through a Scythe KAMA panel on the front for adjustababiilty (and to show off a bit).
One thing i also wondered......is it worth the bother of buying a replacement GPU heatsink/cooler arrangement for a card like 4870 or is the one supplied on say a sapphire model more than sufficient?
I would say keep stock, unless the temps are bad, and only if your overclocking get a replacement, as they void warranty.

They get very hot under load but this is part of the design so keep with the reference cooler.
Even though you have lots of fans it still advantageous to get a backloader type cooler to dump it straight outside

(Preferably an XFX GTX260 CORE216 Black)
thank you Uncle Fred :)
Would a 700w Power supply be fit to power a GTX 260 tho??
thanks
Yes a decent 700w psu like the stealth xtream would power a 260gtx.
