View Full Version : wireless network problems
having alot of problems with my wireless adapter connecting to the internet. i know that my router and modem are fine as the laptop and other wireless pc have no problems getting online.
it seems to be with this specific pc as i'm using a netgear rangemax wireless-N wn111 adapter. what seems to happen is i'll be connected to the net then all of a sudden it'll loose its internet access. then i have to disconnect and reconnect etc to get back online. whenever i try to diagnose the problem it just says "windows did not find anything wrong with your connection"
its aggravating as this is used as the gaming pc for everyone and any online games after a couple of minutes of playtime it gets disconnected from the servers because the pc looses its internet connection.
has anyone got any ideas what-so-ever as to what is causing this cos its driving me mad!!!!
PLEASE HELP!!!
I think its most likely that your wireless adapter isnt fully compatible with your routers wireless tech
Basicly your router will be wireless b/g and your adapter is wireless n
YOu may be able to change your wireless adapter to g or b tecnology but its doubtful
Also, it may be a problem with the kind of security your router is using for the wireless
There should be
WEP
WPA
WPA/WPA2
WPSK
If i were you id use WEP or WPA and make sure you copy the wireless key first so you can paste it back in once youve changed the secutiy type
Hope this helps mate

watcha mate thanks for your input
i've got a wpa2 key. i sorted the key out when i first installed the router. it works fine with the other wireless setups?
the router is also a netgear rangemax wireless-N wnr3500. it recommends using the wn111 as a wireless adapter so it cant be that.
can you think of anything else?
p.s its disconnected around 10 times in the last 45 mins
dodgy drivers? Dodgy firmware?
Using windows config or netgear software?
Wireless N tech has some known conflicts and incompatabilty issues with WPA2 technology
Try changing the security type to WPA or WEP
And if that fails take jons advice and reinstall your adapter drivers
Make sure you clean them out before installing them again

windows config as the netgear software wouldn't work properly.
i know this sounds bad but its never been this dodgy. its been getting worse and worse for the past couple of months until in the last week i've been lucky to stay on for more than 10mins!
Try a driver cleaner then reinstall the netgear drivers and try use the netgear utility with WZC disables in services
If that doesnt work disable the netgear one and use WZC

right, to be honest you've lost me a bit mate
what driver cleaner should i download?
and what is WZC?
sorry for appearing dumb!
Sorry mate, wzc is wireless zero config
You can disable and enable it by going to run and typing services.msc and scrolling down to WZC

and how do i wipe all the previously installed drivers for the wireless adapter? or is this ^^^^ how to do it?
dooes anybody know how to find out how to access the router settings as admin? i cn access the modem but cant remember the ip you have to type in the explorer bar
I think my routers default IP address is 192.168.0.254 (Netgear)

didn't work for mine champ :(
Take ur computer out of the concrete, lead-lined box :p
To find the IP of your router go to start > run > type ipconfig >hit enter
Some info will show up after a delay. Look for the name of your wireless connection and your router should be the "default gateway" address.

right, i'm in on the router setup. going to tr to change the key from a wpa2 to something else monkey suggested
god dammit i was wrong about that too. the wireless setup is using a.....WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]
as the key. should it be using this or is this wrong too?
btw monkey what should i do about the WZC????
right, i didn't do ANYTHING and for the last few minutes lost all internet access in the whole house. even on my main wired pc.
what the hell is going on!?!?!:cry::cry:
Think your router may need resetting to factory settings...

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
i've forgotten how i set it up last time to work along side my modem. all i do remember is it was a complete ball ache and took ages as i'm a noob when it comes to networks and internet.
now i really am>>>>
Should document everything, then if something goes belly-up you know what you did :)
Unplug both your modem and your router for a few minutes
Plug them back in
Go to Run type cmd and in the command prompt type ipconfig
Then type the default gateway into your address bar and then set an admin password

learn from your mistakes then basically. god dam it

sorry mate i have forgotten why i'm meant to do this?
monkey, what driver remover should i use and is it definitely worth me changing from a WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] key to a wpa ?
**edit**
right i've changed now to a wpa key.
reconfigured all the computers etc in the house. they are back on the internet.
the only way i'm going to find out if it has worked is by seeing whether or not i lose my connection. i'll keep the thread posted. knowing my luck sooner than later ;)
quick update. its now been over 5 hours since changing the key to a wpa and it hasn't disconnected once!!!
