View Full Version : DVI Splitter...
Hi guys
My problem, I have a nice 24" Dell monitor that i hardly use as i mostly use my laptop now.
My desktop is connected to the monitor via DVI
Now i want to use the monitor with my laptop too, Ive tried VGA but the quality sucks and it hurst my eyes.
My laptop has HDMI out that i can use. So, Can i use a DVI splitter on the monitor and then just use a DVI-HDMI block from the laptop?
I know its not meant to be used that way but would it work? And what alternative do i have? What would happen if i turned both PC's on?
Thanks
Mat:S

However, I wouldnt be afraid to try it and i'd definitely give it a go! :) In my thinking, if its one computer or the other thats sending the signal, then the monitor shouldnt know any difference and just display normally. It is a passive splitter isnt it? And not a powered one with a signal booster or something in it?
Again, I'm just basing this on just thinking through how I think it would work, and havent tried it so not 100% sure what the results would be!

Armageddon.
Or.... nothing, or an extremely messed up display.. I really dont know to be honest! Might be an interesting experiment
If you think vga is cr@p just wait till you try dvi to hdmi. I tried it from my media pc to my tv and whilst it's ok for media stuff, watching films / tv and the like, for "normal" use like web browsing it was dire as it was blurry, i lost the top and bottom of the screen which was most annoying unless i forced some weird resolution on the whole dvi to hdmi was pants, set the proper resolution for the monitor and vga is fine.
Ive unplugged the other PC and tried my laptop on it via DVI-HDMI and its fine8)
Its a tricky one:S
What about this?

Bloody £60 though!!!
So I guess you could say my experience with the Belkin Flip DVI-D is pretty much a total failure. I love the product concept—an affordable, easy-to-use DVI-D KVM switch with a snazzy design—but the execution kills it. The thing just doesn't work right.
A quote from a review i found of it:cry:
Back to the DVI splitter but i dont want to blow my monitor up by switching them on at the same time:sad:
What about something like this? Just use the dvi inputs and not the others...

Its a laptop so if i close the lid and put it out of the way i have no keyboard...
That Belkin is just what i need with audio too, Just a shame its **** apperently!
Thats what I mean.. Dont plug in the keyboard/mouse stuff.. Literally just use the dvi inputs and then it will act as a DVI switch?
But now i have seen it i would like the USB and audio:mrgreen:
Anyone at aria got or tried one of these?
Cant say I have but I've never seen any being returned for being bad
Might have got over the problems then like i saw someone reported on some AU site..
Will see what santa brings:mrgreen::chairfall:
Edit- Im trying to save up for some alloy wheels here!
take a day trip to that area renowned for cars resting on bricks ;)
I dont want any chav scabby wheels thankyou:mrgreen:
It's not more of affording, Its making my mind up what ones as there must be 1000's out there!:S
Ive made a photoshop of what i want and will post in my car thread tonight:thumbsup:
