I'd like to see slot loading DVD-ROM/writing drives again. I've been using a Pioneer slot loader DVD Rom drive for years without a single prob (not so much as a scratch or stuck disc). I'm wanting my new system (housed in the rather nice NZXT Lexa case) to use slot loaders only (I've one Plextor PX-716AL) but finding them is like trying to find hens teeth.

To the best of my knowledge you can't buy them anymore. I'm resorting to whipping the one out of my current machine, spray painting the bezel black and sticking it in the new one :) . Though I'd really like to leave my present machine in one piece.

Yep slot loaders are harder to find the rocking horse poo!
Lol...those hens teeth sound cool, where can I get a set?
M...
The only slot loading drives that i have seen are of the laptop variety. There are DVD writers and CD Writers/DVD Player drives made by Panasonic.
If you are good at modding, you could always fit these into your system by hacking at your case front? Or how about fitting 2 drives into 1 bay? Sounds interesting!

A possibility, hmmm. It'll take a bit of work, I'll have to figure out how to slot them in, the Lexa case uses rails (plastic, took a while to figure out how to get the bleedin' floppy in, the instructions with the case are terrible). But I like the idea though :D .
Just found this slot loading drive but i can't figure it out whether it is a standard 5 1/4\" drive or slimline sized? http://store.mp3car.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1
It's the second one down with no picture.
Otherwise, you can get the slimline style drives from here too

Hope it helps.

The second one down is a slim line jobbie (1/2 inch high), however I can get a slim line (lite on) DVD burner from Aria for less than Mini-itx.com, the converter interface on the other hand could be a bit of a sourcing prob.

Well I've got the conversion interface (from Maplins) but I need a 4pin Molex/4pin 3.5\" mini connector conversion so I can power the bleedin' thing. Anyone know where I can get my mitts on one?

PC complete with slim line laptop drive in place and working. You can see the pic's of the machine here - http://forum.micromart.co.uk/Topic161193-19-6.aspx :D
Loved building it (hated routing the bleedin' cables though talk about stiff)

Thanks, in the end I had to make a cradle for the drive which is screwed to the face plate and supported by a thin metal bar running across the back (it was a bit of guess work when it came to fitting the Master/slave jumpers seeing as there is nothing on the converter to indicated which is which). Now that it's all up and running I have to say I'm really pleased, only draw back is having to install all my software and about 5.5GB's of Poser content :D .
The Lexa's a bit on the tight side, I only just managed to get a x1950XT in there, I'd really hate to try and squeeze a 8800 series card in. As far as the area around the HSF is concerned it's quite roomy and the Zalman fits quite nicely. The plus side is that it's as quieter than my old PC and has more fans (I'm getting around 24-28deg C idle on my C2D according to Core Temp).
