Hi,
I'm trying to get my new spinpoint 1tb to work. This is actually my second drive as I had to rma the first one due to a smart error.
So when I try to install vista it goes through the process (albeit a bit slowly) and then seems to hang on the configuring system stage (the last stage). I ran samsung's estool diagnostics on the drive and the spin up / down test fails, wakeup takes too long. While this test is being done the drive makes some beep noises (could be the pc speaker) and generally sounds odd. All the other tests pass though.
So, could the spinup/down test be affected by power supply issues? My psu went pop at the weekend so I've bought a cheap replacement to get me up and running.
I've tried the drive in three different sata slots.
Motherboard is a ga965-ds3p rev 3.3 . So not the newest of boards by any means.
I've tried setting the drive to ata 150 in case that was the problem.
Currently going through install attempt number 3 now...

Can you post the exact details of the rest of your system?

hd103uj/exp hard drive (samsung 1tb job)
3.5 gig of ram
nvidia 8800 gt gfx
usb soundcard
dvd-r drive (pata)

anything else I should include?

hmm, well vista appears to have installed ok this time.
Just had to leave it for ages to finish the install process.

installing vista can be hit and miss with more than 2gb of ram installed.
