I have the Radeon X1600 pro AGP graphics card, its cooling sucks, it works at 19% fan when idling, which the temperatures stay at 57 degrees. Luckily Im using Ati Tool and have turned up the onboard fan. Can anyone explain whether this is a good course of action? Also, What sort of temperatures are ok for a GPU? The fan is at 90% atm to try and cool it, to 40 i said, will leave it at 50 degrees tho.

Should i buy a Zalman or other cooler?

Also, (sapphire X1600PRO 256mb.) Has only 4 active pipelines, while on the description it says it has 12. How do i open the rest up?

57 idle seems ok as i type this my 1900 is at 59 and i too use ati tool to control the fan more for peace and quiet than anything else as when the fan speed goes up it is a tad noisey though i use headphones so i can't hear it whilst gaming  .

Assuming your 1600 is like my gfx card then anything the cool side of 80ish c should be ok though fitting a better cooler is a good idea if you want to run it cooler and quieter.

Its very quiet, that could be because ATI make the fan run at 19%! I am using ATI tool, and am making the fan work so that it stays near 55 degrees. Should I raise that to 65? So that the fan doesnt get too noisy?

upto you really mate, you could set ati tool to maintain a certain temp ie 60c so that when idling the fan is at 19% or whatever and quiet but when all hell lets loose and you hit bf2 or your current fav game the temps rise and so does the fan speed.

Personally i wouldn't want mine to run above 60c permanantly (now at 58c with a fan speed of 36%) but tis upto you.

Just adjusted it so it keeps the temps at 55, do you think 50 would be better?

nah 55 idle is ok 8)

Edit:-

As to the pipelines i assume you are reading that info from atitool?

Cos on my 1900 it reads 16 \"active pipelines\" but on the sapphire website it lists them as \"Up to 48 pixel shader processors\" which sometimes gets mis inturpreted as 48 pipelines.

Like wise the 1600 has \"Twelve pixel shader processors\" could be mis inturpreted as 12 pipelines :?:

yeah so 55 will be ok for the 1600 :D

See my edit above regarding the pipeline thingy.

Help needed!

Played DOD for 30mins came off and it said the GPU temp is 128!!!!!

Wondered if that was correct, so touched the heatsink, and have got a burn on my fingers!

I think Im going to have to get that Zalman cooler!

 indeed 128 sounds a tad warm, nay it sounds chuffing well too hot whats the airflow like in the case?? Also check atitool hasn't crashed or something and truned the fan speeds to something stupid.

On a slightly different note i don't seem to have any vertex shaders listed for my 1900 what version of atitool are you using?

0.25 beta, I have turned that pc off! It smells slightly cooked IMO Will check on it later. Looks like Zalman here I come! Can you reccomend the best way to clean thermal gunk off, coz It all needs to be clean for the zalman when I buy it.

You can actually buy proper thermal trnsfer compound removing fluid but tbh i never used it i find just wiping it off with a piece of rag is sufficient but occasionally i need to use some ipa (no not beer) isopropolalcohol (SP?) as used in head cleaners for tape decks (anyone remember those?) or video head cleaning fluid, failing that ask your mum / sis for some nail varnish remover. Make sure any residue is completetly cleaned off before refitting the new heatsink.

Got it today, my techie bro helped me do it, Now the X1600 pro wont go above 45 degrees, and i did play a game for 10 mins to see if it would raise the temps. Zalman and aria are my saviour!

Its idling at 40, and with the ati tool its staying at about 50 on 3d view and then dropped off.

Wahey nice result mate, sounds like the stock cooler for the 1600pros are somewhat pants.

Its a really odd cooler, its different to all pictures, its the same cooler as the X1600XT one, i think. It was amazingly bad, this zalman doesnt let the card go over 45 degrees (even gaming), even though the cooling paste isnt fully set, and the case isnt fully shut.

Got 40mhz out of the core without a temp change, still idling same!
