Hi all

I posted about a month or so ago about the fact i was deciding on bits for my first build pc. In the end I decided mostly by fate to opt for the msi p35 diamond with 2gb corsair ddr3, intell q6600 cpu, samsung 500gb f1 with 200 seagate bara, freezer pro 7 fan and a gaming case i found online. powered by a 700w psu.
Now I have put it all together and flicked the switch on the rear and the standby light comes on as it should.
Then I hit the power button on the front and the power light flickers and then nothing.
If I then try and hit the power button again nothing not even the flicker. I have to turn off the psu at the back to get the flicker again.

I disconnected all of the power cables from the mobo and drives etc and just re-connect the 24pin power to the mobo. and it started fine including when the front power button was pressed.
I went through and connected all of them fine until the cpu 8pin then it wouldnt turn on again and follow the exact patter as above.
I hope this makes some sort of sense to someone who can advise where to go from here.

many thanks

Dan

sounds like you have found your issue, return the psu.

if you can you could try another psu to be 100% sure.

it sounds like a short in that 5v line, psu would be my first guess but yes it could be the board or cpu too as all 3 have a part to play.

what do you mean by it turned on fine until you replaced the 8pin?

also is it a 5v cpu 8 pin or 12v pcie 8pin as forcing the later in the first could cause some issues....

Ok

ive just been out and got my psu tested and its is fine to my horror. so this suggests either motherboard or cpu. I also noted when i turn on the system without the cpu 12v 8pin connected as siad it starts fine and all the fans power up leds etc etc. however there are some red leds on the board to indicate any possible errors on startup. please see link to manual

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=manual&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1214

I have all of the gorups of leds on which suggest cpu damaged or incorrectly placed, however it would say this as the power for the cpu is not connect so im stuck as to what to do.

any suggestions much appreciated

thanks Dan

If it's anything like my Neo2 then it may be a little fussy on the ram you've used.

(although it's unusual for a board to boot at all with out the p4/8 connector)

have you tried with only one dimm?

I notice it has a molex power connector on the mobo did you have this plugged in too?

The PCIE 8 way shouldn't plug into the mobo connector so i doubt it is the wrong 8 way power connector into the mobo, both are 12v but wired differently so if you did somehow manage to get the wrong one in it could short out, it maybe worth trying to power it up out side of the case.

not tried it without any ram but could this ago.

Yes it turns on both with and without the molex connected as this is for power to the pci-16 and when connected the led to confirm power to the pci 16 comes on so im not really worried about this.
if I have shorted it which im unsure as from my psu I only have one 8pin.
Ok having just checked on google I dont actually have a 8pin on my psu I only have the 6pin pci and a 4pin. could this explain anything. and what could i do.

cheers all

Waht psu do you have exactly?

Only having a 4pin atx mobo power connector isn't a problem as it should still work with that. Notice on the picture from msi's website it actually has a cap over half of the 8way mobo connector meaning the 8way is optional.

I have the Intel quad q6600, cpu and a generic psu from my local pc shop as my original psu was faulty he advised me this would more then do the job.

just found this could this be anything. also It doesnt have the cove ron the mobo when it arrives so i think I may have put th 6pin in withou thinking.

The 6 pin is probably (almost definately) wired differently so you may have been shorting it out plugging it into the mobo. This would have caused the psu to go into short circuit protection mode resulting in what you saw. Try it with the 4 pin plugged in to the top 4 as shown in the pic and, hopefully, it should be ok.

Fingers crossed plugging the pcie power connector in there didn't damage anything.
