I thought I read that lapping posed no benefits on the latest processor designs?

Suppose it can be but your warranty will be voided

There are people that do lap them, I have seen many posts on forums around the net, including tomshardware

did they show any "real" benefits to justify voiding the warranty?

A few degrees c i think.

Only really pays off if you have one with a really warped ihs

2 thoughts on why it improves your temps, 1st is the smoother the finish the better the contact with your cooler, the 2nd is there is less metal between the ic and heatsink which is why it cools better.

most say its about a 5c drop.

i saw 1 guy sand away the ihs altogether and just left the bare ic like back in the day.

There are those that remove the IHS but I don't see the point really

I have seen people lapping the actual core... Again, it's for a degree or two's improvement in temps.

If you're pushing it RIGHT to the edge it might be worth it... for most people just buying a better heatsing+fan, better case or just improving airflow through the case will give the same improvements.

Alternatively stick the whole thing in the fridge or get a child to fan the box with a big piece of card.

I did lap my old freezer64 only cos on side looked a bit iffy and darker so got it too a decent finish, not a full mirror finish like some do
