If you want to have a website to sell digital products soley on your own without using any affiliate (not sure if this is the right word to describe) program - amazon, ebay etc. Then before people will generally buy goods from you they would at least like to see you are a real trading company not just someone who setup a random site with a few PayPal buttons (in my opinion)

If you have all this in place then maybe you could try an open sourced CMS type system using extensions, eg Joomla is pretty good for that stuff and the extensions for creating a digital download store are there (though I have yet to use any) You will be able to manage your site without having to worry about the coding of it all.

What kind of digital goods are we talking about? I would imagine the procedure would vary a bit depending on what you are actually selling.

best bet use ebay until you get a name for your self. No offence but i wouldn't use your site to buy stuff as it has no protection.

however here is a link to some e commerce site you could install http://www.softaculous.com/softwares/ecommerce

If you're doing it through your own website, using PayPal, then you need to read up on PayPal's IPN (Instant Payment Notification). I've done this before to sell PHP Scripts in the past. The IPN itself will need some PHP Knowledge to setup.

I read up on the IPN, wrote a class to handle it then made a mini store front. You don't have to use PayPal buttons, you can design your own. When a payment is made, the IPN handles and validates the request and then adds the digital product to the users account for download.

PayPal | Instant Payment Notification (https://www.paypal.com/ipn) - I hope you have some PHP skills. Otherwise, a premade open source digital commerce script would be easier.

There are quite a lot of opensource shopping carts out there which support digital products, look into things like Magento, Cubecart, Opencart and I think things like OS commerce and Zen cart also do. Depending on your hosting you may even be able to install some of them with a single click from your Cpanel

I'd recommend Zen Cart as an open source cart. A lot of hosting packages include it as part of Fantastico.
