Just like XP when that came out

Although, Vista cant be that great cos there already working on new windows OS

They're always working on a new OS... thats what the engineers are paid to do... :)

wonderlust
09-10-08, 14:08
The fun thing is Windows 7 won't be...

the beta versions are 6.x not 7.x :D

Monkey
09-10-08, 14:10
What does that mean?

wonderlust
09-10-08, 14:17
ok, imagine a user calls up with an error ie installing a peice of software, you ask which windows are you running they say Windows 7, you ask what version they say version 6.x you see?

nft99
09-10-08, 14:29
xp for me for a while longer then :)

Monkey
09-10-08, 14:29
Oh i see, isnt that cos they started working on one and scrapped it?

wonderlust
09-10-08, 14:38
what is currently called windows 7 can be considered a sort of Vista SE

Or more like what XP brought to Windows 2000, XP being Windows 2000 with fancy bits added...

Monkey

Do you wreckon vista ultimate customers will be provided wil a free upgrade? :P

I sure hope so

wonderlust

Monkey
09-10-08, 14:50
Ha ha, thats a no then, robbin *******s!

wonderlust
09-10-08, 14:56
I suppose they may think about a discounted upgrade, but it will probably easier to buy another OEM

jonwoad
09-10-08, 15:09
I get a feeling they'll do what they did when vista came out... offer vouchers for a few months coming up to release

wonderlust
09-10-08, 15:11
So jon will be sending us all a free voucher :D (NOT)

jonwoad
09-10-08, 15:11
it'll cost ya lol

wonderlust
09-10-08, 15:12
ok, let me print this thread for future reference ;)

jonwoad
09-10-08, 15:14
the price will be the cost of vista at the time vouchers are being included (should they be)

I couldn't go back to XP simply because it doesnt have the glass interface. It's so nice and responsive, no need to wait for a window to refresh like in XP. Oh and DX10.

Apart from that, I see little difference. save for Vista trying to hold your hand quite a bit and failing ("windows is trying to fix the problem" - err ok great, what are you actually doing though?!). You feel like theres a barrier between you and the nuts and bolts of the OS.

jonwoad
09-10-08, 15:37
I turned off all the eye candy on vista, sidebar, glass etc, and I dont have DX10 card so theres nothing that XP cant do :)

If you switch of glass then yes you basically get XP. I think glass is more responsive as its all done on your GPU instead of being handled by the CPU.

jonwoad

which is ok if you have a big meaty gfx card :P

7950GX2 should be fine with it? Meh, each to their own I say. I can understand why people stick with XP, and to be honest I dont blame them, considering you get little benefits for a bigger pricetag.

Agreed - Vista is so much better and more responsive.

20 REASONS VISTA SUCKS!

1) Hardware doesn’t run well on Vista (even new hardware)
2) The new security of Vista is overkill most of the time, being prompted for every little thing is bad enough but Vista even labels existing applications as suspicious.
3) Lack of drivers for older and newer hardware.
4) Power options do not change automatically for laptops depending on whether you are plugged or unplugged from a power source.
5) The Start Menu has been redone with a completely different look, unfortunately it is hard to navigate and find what you are looking for.
6) Rebooting a Vista machine is supposed to be faster, but it actually takes longer to reboot than XP.
7) The much talked about Aero UI is great to look at, but with all the resources it takes just to run it all you will be able to do is look at it and not actually work on your pc.
8 ) The many different versions of Vista will be confusing to some basic computer users who are not sure of what exactly they need so in the end they will probably figure more expensive means better and pay for a version they don’t need in the first place.
9) Horrible graphics performance that was not an issue with XP.
10) Although the look is “improved” basic functions like add/remove programs are hard to find.
11) VPN doesn’t work correctly, even though there are a few work arounds for this it is still not an easy process.
12) Software that is supposed to be windows compatible shuts down randomly.
13) Firefox runs ten times better than IE7 in vista.
14) The sidebar is another resource hog.
15) Readyboost seems like a good idea if you can get it to work.
16) DVD playback through windows media player or media center lacks quality.
17) Minor changes to hardware may prevent the system to boot up.
18) No “open with” when right clicking on a file.
19) My brand new Netgear Eva8000 streaming media device will not work wirelessly with vista due to some tcp stack problem in vista (it did work perfect with xp).
20) Windows Improved search is a total mess and not very accurate.

How long was it you stuck with windows 98 before changing to XP then ?

I remember every doing all the same bashing when Xp was released..

Monkey
09-10-08, 16:23
I find it to be almost the same as xp except for different layout and features, runs ok for me, so far anyway, but i must admit there are some stupid things theyve done, such as change the way the documents folder behaves and my computer is now "computer" which kinda makes sense.

alexnifty
09-10-08, 16:23
I didnt have 98, I had *shudders* ME.

XP and Vista are better than ME...

only benefit i can think of is, glass and aero. How many times does ANYONE use the windows key and tab to browse through windows graphically? Honestly?

Alt- Tab far quicker

Infact as the windows key is next to the alt key it's actually the same.
but with the aero u can see what ur changing too :)

I dont usually have that many windows open and just use the taskbar.
The little mini window preview can be useful though.
You can get it in XP with a hack of some kind I think, but its not the same thing because you can minimise a game or movie in Vista and see it still playing in the mini-window (thanks to it all being on the GPU), with the XP one its just a cached screenshot.

jonwoad
09-10-08, 16:45
I think 1 in 3 installations of ME worked properly... least in my experience.

alexnifty
09-10-08, 16:47
It killed my two hard drives :(

jonwoad
09-10-08, 16:48
how that work?

alexnifty
09-10-08, 16:52
I dont remember exactly, but those disks were both dead within a year :( It was probably due to the number of times I had to reinstall that evil OS.

nft99
09-10-08, 17:43

it didnt the drives killed themselves when they realised you had put ME on them :D

wonderlust
09-10-08, 17:44
You sure they weren't Ibm Deathstars?

It was about that time...

alexnifty
09-10-08, 17:49
I think it had a lot to do with the random crashing and shutdowns that ME would do.

wonderlust
09-10-08, 17:50
Yeah it is the only OS that I have had on my PC for only a few days, went back to win98SE IIRC

alexnifty
09-10-08, 17:57
I was only about 16 when I got it on a Tiny PC my mum got me and my bro. Lets just say that fixing ME's myriad issues was a steep learning curve.

I've disabled my windows keys..cos I would be in a fight in cod 4 and I would go to press alt or ctrl and end up pressing the windows key and game minimizes

jonwoad
10-10-08, 09:12
G15 FTW... has a windows key disable switch :D

alexnifty
10-10-08, 10:56
I was playing with the windows button and tab in vista last night. I would use it if I had a lot of windows open for sure.

And most of those things in the 20 reasy why vista sucks have been fixed or are untrue. The 'Open with...' thing for example, I checked last night, it's there.
