Im trying to setup a nas to backup files from a load of win7 machines but I am having problems using an xp machine to connect to any of them so thought id try a linux install.
Can someone advise me on which is the best linux to use for this please. Ideally I want to use windows 7 backup to a network drive feature unless anyone as a better alternative.

Can you manually map a network drive to the ip address of the machine ?
Eg: \\192.168.1.2\c$ ;)

Not sure, im gonna try that in a minute. I think theres a problem with my win7 ultimate pc, i can access the homegroup fine from another win7 pc but that same pc cant access the non homegroup shared folders for some reason - which apears to be the sme problem from 2 different xp installations from this other pc im trying to set up

sounds like a public share permissions error on the windows 7 machine, its quite picky.
