Damn, wish I wasn't going on my hols. No cash to spare.
Hope theres a deal like this when I get back though, I'm trying to build a pc for the kids to mess about on, no touchy touchy with mine as they always mess something up. These would OC really well with that cooler.

This falls into the price window I'm prepared to pay, but would it be overkill for someone who goes nowhere near a game?

I just want a decent card that can feed a pair (or more) of monitors.

Something to replace an on-board ATI Radeon HD 4250.

Pretty sure this one uses 2x 6pin and you get molex to 6pin plugs in the box.

Manual says:

A power supply that provides at least 500-watt and with two 75w 2x3-pin PCIe power connector is required. GIGABYTE - Graphics Card - ATI - PCI Express Solution - Radeon HD 5000 series - GV-R583UD-1GD (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3353#ov)

I assume that's the one.

Surely it would need to be bios flashed before it would crossfire? If it's even possible to bios flash it to a 5850

The cores are already clocked to 800mhz compared to the 5850's 725mhz. Memory is clocked the same. The 5830's are lower specced than the 5850. Less stream processors, texture units and ROPs. See here (http://www.anandtech.com/show/2947).

It's still a decent card and that's a cracking price.

AFAIK, you can xfire 58xx with any other 58xx.
same goes as u can xfire 57xx with 57xx.

e.g. loads of people have had a 4870 xfired with a 4890. as long as theyr from the same generation (5K) and series (8xx or 7xx etc) then it should be fine :thumb:

They will crossfire fine, 5870, 5830 and 5850 can all crossfire together.

No flashing required or anything.

Yeah, it used to be that one card would downclock to match the other but now the 5870 will just do more work is all.

If you said that 2 x 5870 was around a 90% boost over one card.

Then a 5850 would be around a 70% boost so maybe 50%.

Dunno really but it should work quite well.

If they are still £70 on friday i'll get one.

Thanks. You learn something new everyday!
I thought to get 2 different cards working you had to use that Lucid software that had poor results.

Might look into this purely for poos and giggles. If it works - winner, if not, the daughter gets it :)

With ATI at least, generally you can crossfire with cards within the same 'family'. So a 5870 will play ball with anything starting 58XX, but 4XXX, or 6XXX, or even 57XX can't be used together (except possibly with Lucid Hydra).

Excellent, thanks for the info :D

I think it's this or an SSD but i feel my cpu is holding back my 5850 as it is so perhaps an SSD may be a better bet on second thought :)

about same length as a 5870 so ~10.5"+ AFAIK!

Mine has arrived certainly is a nice looking card. Comes with a nice selection of bits vary immpressive for £71. The power connectors are on the top edge as well which is going to help me no end. Will install later hopefully my 2 gb of ram and a Athlon II x4 will produce some decent ish results..:D

Yeah people want to buy these ones because they aren't from a competitor...

F1REFOX
15-06-11, 16:17
Mine is installed and running. Really immpressed, with a stock Athlon II x4 and 2gb of awfull cheap Ram it runs Dirt 3 @ 1080p max settings perfect. Even the witcher 2 @ 1080p with everything exept uber sampling runs perfect.

Only downside is its a little noisy but then I was using the onboard Gpu before and it heats up my little micro atx case to toasty levels so will need to look at cooling. My little Corsair 430W psu gets nice and toasty..:D

For £71 this is a fabulous card and offers performance matching more expensive cards, I cannot see any noticeable in game difference in Dirt 3 using this setup or my old gaming Pc which had a Phenom II x4 @ 4ghz and a 6950...

Cheers

I have tried it another pc it was ok at first, then loaded dirt 3 and it was currupting like mad and then black screened. The card temp has not gone above 65.c so looks like I was just unlucky and got a faulty one...:( Oh well these things happen I suppose..

I would have one of the reference style ones. I have an RMA number to send the Gigabyte back which I will do in the morning. How long would it take for the XFX one to be sent out ? Would I be better getting a refund on this one and ordering the XFX seperate as I don't want to miss out if they sell quick.

They are bangers they will not be here long to be fair. I would go for the refund option and rebuy the XFX.
