This is a build log i started on another forum and I'm now putting it onto this one for all you guys to see too :)
START:
My PC currently resides inside an Antec 900 which, over the years, has had many a rushed mod done to it and basically I'm fed up with all this compromise so I'm starting again with something new that I will give much more love :D
As for colours I'm pretty set on matt black inside and gloss white outside. This will be a powdercoat.
For design and lighting details I think I'll be getting a minimal design based around lines or circles laser cut into the front plate and the midplate then a sheet of acrylic will be placed behind those and lit with white LEDs. Still thinking about designs for that. Might also make a lit acrylic panel that sits between the motherboard and mortherboard tray so the edge is kind of lit up.
All actual PC components will be carried over from my current build.
My current PC:

Pics of what new goodies I have so far:
I'll be making a new one piece front which will be made to accommodate a slot drive and perhaps a fan controller.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040209.jpg
I may however get a 3.5" fan controller and mount it behind the little door.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040178.jpg
I will be replacing the PSU and back plate with new ones that have no squares.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040151.jpg
I put some fractal fans in. These will hopefully be enough to get the heat my chipset produces out of the case. Will probably make some plain black stickers for them too.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040085.jpg
I'm almost definitely putting a window in place of this mesh.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040097.jpg
I really don't like the new motherboard tray! So I've ordered the old one direct from Silverstone.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040071.jpg
I'll be putting in a new midplate which will have 2 pass through fittings in.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040059.jpg
I'll be making covers for the side of the drive bays and the one on this side will probably have a cutout for my SSD to kind of display it a bit.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040054.jpg
A window will be cut in the side panel.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040009.jpg
I also found these for half their usual price on eBay so I bought all three that the seller had. They are 1/2" ID 3/4" OD and should go nicely with the white tubing I'm planning on getting.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040226.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040241.jpg
Seeing as I'm on the topic of watercooling. My loop will take the pump (maybe replace with a laing DDC, not sure yet), res and blocks from my current build and will include new fittings and a new 480 rad.
UPDATE 1:
Ordered a few more bits. Some pre cut panels, a pump vibration killing foam thing and a hammond box to cover the green PCB in this shot of the front panel sleeving I've just finished:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040256.jpg
UPDATE 2:
I sleeved the fractal fans :) These will be plugged directly into my motherboard rather than onto the fan controller as they are dead silent anyway.
I also just ordered a 1000mm x 500mm x 2mm sheet of aluminium. It's probably more than I need but I'm sure to make mistakes lol.
Anyway, to the pics! ...

UPDATE 3:
Ok peeps, some more stuff arrived today and I took some pics. A TJ07 side panel makes a rather nice background I've found :D
There's some grime on some of the parts but I didn't have time to clean them before taking pics. Busy busy :P
To the pics!!
New back panel:

New midplate, ready for a bit of cutting action:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040369.jpg
New PSU plate, nice and unsquarified:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040338.jpg
A little hammond box for covering the nasty green front panel PCB:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040362.jpg
PUMP FOAM!! It's about 12cm x 12cm x 3cm i think, maybe bigger. Enough for several pumps lol:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040354.jpg
Still waiting on my aluminium sheet. If that arrives before the weekend when I have free time then hopefully I should be able to put up some pics of actual work being done :D
------------
Right that's the worklog so far copied from the other forum. I'll post all future updates on here too as new replies as per the usual convention :D
Looks epic so far. How do you get the 24pin braided like that as opposed to having 1 sleeve for the whole thing?
Strictly speaking, if I get my case powdercoated first, you'll be copying me :D
I'd be tempted to say you have OCD... and I absolutely LOVE it :thumb: :D
(I am also slightly obsessive so no offence intended ;) )
So you are going from that rather tastey looking rig to...
now THIS could be interesting

You have to pop the pins out of the connectors with a special tool and sleeve each cable with small sleeve.

Haha none taken ofc :) Its all about the details!!
Hopefully this weekend I'll get some proper progress done.

Haha thanks. Well a made a crap case good now I'll make a great case awesome :D

An atx pin removal tool. I have the pulse Modding one, its good. Crap ones break :/

looking forwart to seeing this one progress gonna be tastey, why on earth did they screw with the back plates on the new version chucking squares on it looks awefull glad you went for the solid looks much cleaner

Its always had the squares which is why companies make the replacement ones like I bought. As far as I know the main thing they changed is the mobo tray. Silverstone shipped me an old one without the cut out yesterday so should arrive in the next week :)
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using Tapatalk
How much did they charge for the backplate?
Just under £20.
All the replacement panels I've bought so far are made by pulse modding.
Silverstone charged me 18 euro for the blank motherboard tray but with shipping and VAT it took the total up to the equivalent of around £36 :P Which was more than I was hoping for but worth it for the clean look I'm going for though ;)

A little update.
I attached all my new panels to get a feel for what it will look like. They will all be black eventually like the rest of the interior.

Oooohhh. Looks nice :)
How many bits of the TJ07 can you take apart? Eg, can you take the middle bit out?
You can take all of it apart! :D
The only bit that uses rivets to secure it together is the motherboard tray which is made up of 3 parts that rivet together. Everything else is just screws so you can take the whole case apart dead easily.
The midplate I bought is actually just a cover that sits on top of the one that's in there to begin with. It doesn't replace the whole part.
I'll be using my pass-through fittings to secure my midplate 'cover' to the actual midplate.

So can I take the bit off that's just above the bottom mesh?
The powdercoaters said that if i could it would be pretty cheap

Personally I would get my TIG welder on the front of the case and weld a piece of Aluminium and then smooth over the front so that when I have it coated it looks like one sexy single sheet of aluminium :)
which bit is the bottom mesh?
which bit is the bottom mesh?
where the 2 HDD cages and PSU are. the bit that houses the 480 rad :D

That's what I'm doing :) Except not welding, it will be removable. Basically instead of several front bezels it will be one large cover with a backlit design.

Yea that's the midplate, it's removable. Just uses screws.
You are talking about this bit yea? :
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040459.jpg
Also in this pic you can see how the midplate cover ends just after the start of the drive bays:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040493.jpg
Don't suppose the actually case frame is removeable?
Don't suppose the actually case frame is removeable?
With a TJ07 the case IS the frame ;)
The frame comprises of the top, front and bottom which is a single piece of extruded aluminium and two uprights at the back fixing the top and bottom of the one piece bit together.
EDIT:
See this pic of a gutted tj07? That's the 'frame' :

Oh right, thanks looks much better like that.
It's going to be good once you've finished modding it. :thumb:

I'm not gutting it completely like that. That's just a stage of the guys build where he'd dismantled the case.
Yeah I know, just meant with all the windows in etc.. that your doing to it will make it look top when it's done.
Thnx v. much :D
I'm hoping it will turn out good. Can't wait to start getting hardware into it, that's a long way off though :(

I take it you were talking about bulldozer lol :D
I take it you were talking about bulldozer lol :D
Lol!
No way am I waiting for that, my i7 920 will still be going strong for ages yet.
Will take ages before I get hardware in coz getting the quality of finish I'm after isn't a quick job :P
Are you spraying the inside black tooand are you doing anything colour wise with the outside?
OCD can be a good thing with this kind of attention to detail!
Are you spraying the inside black tooand are you doing anything colour wise with the outside?
It's in the OP. Inside and back will be matte black and outside will be gloss white. Not spraying it, getting it powdercoated.

Haha thanks, detail is everything :) I don't actually have OCD but I kind of do when it comes to PC projects :D

Looking good so far mate, notsure about the black and white scheme but I have a suspicion you'll make it work:thumb:
Any chance of a step by step guide, with pics, on how to do the sleeving?

Thanks :) I guess the closest thing colourwise to what I'm doing is the new white 600t and that seems to work well.
As for the sleeving guide I can defo find you one. I have one in my bookmarks so I'll post it on here as soon as I'm at my PC :) Its a thread from another forum where people have put sleeving guides, then after a bit people just started to post pics of their completed sleeving so you can look through the thread for inspiration too.

Attention to detail gone too far?
Attention to detail gone too far?
Haha neverr!!
Besides, loads of people do it :)
In fact I've not gone far enough. A lot of people who put on new stickers get them custom printed with the name of their build or the logo of the build if it has one ;)

You won't even see the back of the case!!!
You won't even see the back of the case!!!
You won't see behind the mobo tray very much but that didn't stop this guy doing this:

It's all about making sure that where ever you or someone else might look they will always find perfection :D A bit sad I know but it's how i get my kicks .. lol.
I think you have too much money. Let me help you. Give me some of it :D
I have about £100 each month that I can put towards this depending on how much fuel I have to buy, plus whatever I already had saved and money I can get from selling stuff on ebay. So not bad but I wouldn't say I had too much haha. Nearly all my wages goes on the car for insurance and 2-3 fill ups a month :(
I'll help you out. Give your car to me:D
I have at most £600 for mine.
Neverrr hahaha!
That's about what I'm hoping to spend i think. Although it could go higher if I keep adding bits in lol.
Hopefully I might get another £200.
I might save that for ivybridge an Kepler
I'm hoping to sell over £200 worth of drum stuff I don't use anymore :)
Need to sell all my consoles. I hate them. The only one I'll keep is the PS3 for Bly ray even though I hate it :)
I think I should get around £200 from the DSi and Wii
I know loads of people who have sold or are selling their Wiis. People seem to buy them then realise after 15mins that all the games are boring as crap.
I've had mine for 3 yrs. Took me 1.5 yrs to make me hate it.
I hope someone actually wants it. The Wii fit is pretty epic though
My girlfriend has one and I can't stand it. Maybe that's down to her choice in games though lol. I'm sure there will be Wii games I'll find fun.
Hmmmmm... Would she be interested in a DSi? Lol

Wiis are £100 new now and £60 used :|
Remember when they came out and were selling for £300+
But yeah, they're pretty boring :/

Yea they are good value, I just wish value didn't have to come at the cost of n64 level of graphics quality lol.
Looking good Aidan ;)
Thanks alot :)
My new mobo tray arrived from Silverstone just this minute, I'll take some pics in a bit.
Also I just bought a Laing DDC off ebay for around £40 :D

What's the difference between the DDC and D5 and which is better?
DDC is best IMO.
I just sold one for £35, lol. Now I'm watercooling again so I should've kept it.
Next year I'm getting an XSPC Dual bay res with two ddc's inside for 2 loops.
But what's the difference?
d5 is more powerful but bigger and noisier. DDC is less powerful but tiny in comparison and very quiet.
d5 is more powerful but bigger and noisier. DDC is less powerful but tiny in comparison and very quiet.
ah. I thought the D5 was absolutely silent! Couldn't hear it at all
Maybe I was wrong then lol. It's probably more powerful but at the expense of size rather than noise. It's huge compared to a DDC.
I also prefer the look of a DDC, it's nice and compact and EK make some great looking tops for it.
The one I just bought comes with an alphacool top but I think I will be replacing it with an EK one.

I'm going to be hiding the pump so looks are the last thing on my mind
Pumps can look awesome though.
Look at this pic of 2 DDCs with a white acetal dual top:

Btw, here's the pic of the new mobo tray that just arrived from Germany
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040602.jpg
mobo tray?
The white acetal pump doesn't appeal to me much
mobo tray?
The white acetal pump doesn't appeal to me much
Yea, to replace the one with the big cutout in it that the new TJ07s come with which extends past the edge of the motherboard and spoils the clean look, so I got Silverstone to send me the old version ;)
I love white acetal, nom :D
dammit - you've planted the idea in my head that the mobo tray is ugly! :(
The standoffs are really high with this case so instead of replacing it you could make a cover for it that sits above the tray and beneath the mobo and covers up the hole.

maybe I could spray paint something at the back of that hole and maybe get a word there?
Actually if you had the 24pin all sleeved up it might fill the hole with sleeved cable loveliness anyway haha.

What sleeving did you buy for the 24 and 8 pins? What size?

From testing and in terms of flow rate and pressure the XSPC pump tops are the best for the DDC.
I bought MDPC-X sleeve which is just catagorised into small, USB, SATA, big and jumbo rather than by actual mm size. You get the 'small' sleeve for the PSU cables like 24pin and 6pin etc.
So yea idk about specific sizes as I just get MDPC-X small sleeve :)

I have all EK blocks so I'm going to go with the EK top for consistency I think :)
Oooerrr. I'm going to be spending a lot sleeving!
Yea the MDPC stuff is a bit more expensive than other stuff but imo it's worth it as the colours are amazing and if you use it correctly the triple weave pattern makes it so you can't see the cable through it at all :D
It's just my personal preference but I'm sure there's other stuff out there that is good. If you have a look around for other stuff then try and look for close up shots of it to look at the weave and see if it's good.
Crap sleeve uses a 1 strand weave and you can see the cable through it like in this pic:
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e60/Dangals/24pin.jpg
MDPC stuff doesn't do that and it's made dead easy to buy the right sizes coz you just buy small sleeve and small heatshrink and you're guaranteed a good fit.
With my haf x the sleeving and heatshrink were really crappy. I will certainly buy some decent sleeving

Yea stock sleeve is always rubbish. There's sleeve made by techflex or something that is similar in crappiness to stock sleeve so avoid that.
I have however found this:
http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/Pulse-Modding-25mm-Dense-Weave-Cable-Braid--Black-pid-12207.html
It actually looks like it may be quite good. I've not looked into what the other colours are like but it might be worth a look if you don't want to fork out for the MDPC stuff. Seems the weave is fairly thick and tight which is good. The 2.5mm is the size you want i think.
That's the stuff I used for the HAF X.it wasn't great.
Is specialtech not a competitor then? That's where I get most of the stuff.

I assumed coz aria don't sell sleeving and that specialtech are a watercooling shop which aria aren't it was ok for me to post that link :)
I'm just too cautious. I can probably post links for when I come to liquid cool in another thread. Makes it easier.

Can anyone guess what I'm doing?
Circumcising yourself?
BINGO!
.. i jest.
Cutting aluminium with a stanley knife lol :D
It will be my one piece front to replace the bezels.
I'll probably fold metal tabs that I will screw in to where the bezels did and use maybe velcro to stick the panel to the tabs so I can remove it easily.
You could maybe bend some metal and drill it a bit so you can use screws and nuts where the 5.25 devices would go.
You could maybe bend some metal and drill it a bit so you can use screws and nuts where the 5.25 devices would go.
Yea that's exactly what I'm doing but for the side that attaches to the panel I'll be using velcro so I don't have screws going through my nice neat front :) The side that attaches to the inside of the drive bays will use screws as you described.
Great minds think alike. Lol
Indeed :D
Right I've been stanley knifing this aluminium for a while (about 15mins an hour ago and another 5mins now) and it's cut through more than halfway but my wrist is killing me. I think a better plan would be to get a deep score with the knife like i have now then hacksaw the rest of the way through :)
The knife would certainly give more accuracy. I would stick with it. BE A MAN!!!
It already has given me the accuracy. The hack saw will follow the fairly deep cut I've done with the knife and get the cut done in like a 1/4 of the time.

I've always had bad experiences with hacksaws. they leave an unclean cut. However, I haven't used a good quality one yet. Just the cheapest that the DT department had. I'm soooo glad those years of being forced to do DT are long gone :D
Haha well hopefully my experience won't be that bad lol. I use a really long one that seems to cut really well :) I'm going to file down the cuts anyway to make them smooth as **** :D

just went on MDPC and my basket s around £60 :(
What was the tool required for taking the cables out of the block things?
THIS (http://en.mdpc-x.com/mdpc-sleeve/sleeve-kits-+-tools/sleeve-tools/pin-remover-by-molex-the-original.htm)?
Yea that. The MDPC one is meant to be really good but I've had equally good experiences with the one that pulse modding make. I bought it from Chilled PC for £8.
Seeing as you're already ordering from MDPC you might find it's cheaper to get theirs rather than pay the extra delivery of ordering it from another shop. Unless you're ordering more stuff from Chilled PC?
That tool you linked to will last you forever though so it's a good investment.
When you're using it make sure not to bend it or twist it as that can break even the best tools. Push it in firmly but not overly hard and only push it one direction. Then when it's in 'to the hilt' you tug on the cable and it will pop out :)
Here's the result of my stanley knifing btw:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040613.jpg
I will complete the cut with my hack saw later :)

That tool you linked to will last you forever though so it's a good investment.
When you're using it make sure not to bend it or twist it as that can break even the best tools. Push it in firmly but not overly hard and only push it one direction. Then when it's in 'to the hilt' you tug on the cable and it will pop out :)
After all the sleeving i'm going to buy, I won't have enough for anything from chilledPC!!
Here's the result of my stanley knifing btw:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040613.jpg
I will complete the cut with my hack saw later :)
Looks good:D

Haha ok :D
Send me a list of what's in your basket and I'll see if you need anything more or if there's stuff you can take out :)
will do :D
I'll be ordering all my stuff in a few weeks
Good good.
Will give you time to think of stuff you might need. I hate ordering stuff then remembering I missed something off :(

I probably will miss something anyway!
just went on MDPC and my basket s around £60 :(
What was the tool required for taking the cables out of the block things?
THIS (http://en.mdpc-x.com/mdpc-sleeve/sleeve-kits-+-tools/sleeve-tools/pin-remover-by-molex-the-original.htm)?
Don't buy it. I made that mistake, it's very expensive for what it is.
I got the Phobya set, which includes this tool. But it also includes three other tools for ALL your connectors, including the fans.
That set cost £11. No-brainer really.
Also, my basket is £130 on MDPC. Get's expensive really quick doesn't it!
Who cares! No compromise remember!! :D
Good call Lisa :)
That phobya set sounds good.
Wish I got the MDPC one though so nils could write 'aidan edition' on it lol :D
Might get the phobya kit aswell for all the other tools for fans and stuff ;)

Only problem is, I'll have to pay double postage :(

I've found a lamptron kit for £16

I've found a lamptron kit for £16
That's the atx remover i have.
I've heard of loads of people saying the lamptron ones break :/
Tbh i use the ATX one 90% of the time and i got the molex pin removal tubes from nils and use those the other 10% of the time. To get fan pins out I use the scissors from my pen knife in a closed position to push the little tab down.
So basically if you don't want to pay double postage just get the mdpc one as you will be using only that most of the time anyway.
This is the molex tubes thing i was on about:
http://en.mdpc-x.com/mdpc-sleeve/sleeve-kits-+-tools/sleeve-tools/pin-remover-4-pin-save-my-wallet.htm
I've sleeved mine together haha.
I'll put my MDPC edition one up for sale if you want it Aidan, half price?
I sell a tool I don't need, you get it for much cheaper. Win win.
It's only that expensive because it's the 'official' Molex one anyway.xx
She just means the tool
Always buy your other stuff from MDPC, it rocks :D !! haha
Yup, just the tool. The sleeve is awesome!
I've no point of comparison as it's the only sleeve I've ever seen but it's superb and goes on like butter, I do know that.
I think the link you posted is classed as a competitor so I'd delete that if I were you. :thumb: xx

£50?? The one on chilled PC is well less than that! When the dark tinted one is in stock ill get that.
And btw getting a sleeving package from nils is the best thing ever :D nom
And Lisa, I'll change the link to an image of it in a bit ;)

I know. I'll probably get the chilled pc one aswell if I even get one. The clear one appeals more to me.
I would get some kits but I want colour. I'll email him and ask.
Are you going to get the tinted side panel window aswell?
Are you going to get the tinted side panel window aswell?
Nah that only fits the windowed version of the case and isn't the whole panel, just the acrylic.
I'm making my own window and getting the acrylic milled lower around the edge so it slots into the hole I'm making. I don't really know how to explain it really other than look at how the top windows on chilled PC work coz I think they are the same.

I thought you had the windowed version. That was the reason I went for the TJ07 over the Antec 1200
Nah, didn't like the size of the window. Goes to far over into the drive bay area. Also with mine I'm going to fit it without screws so there will be no holes showing on the outside.

Right, I had some time today to work on the front on my case.
So I had my scoring from the other day...
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040624.jpg
...but I had two perpendicular score lines so in order to bend and snap the longer edge I had to cut the smaller one with a hacksaw
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040641.jpg
Then I could bend and snap along the long score line...
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040649.jpg
...and the front was free
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040654.jpg
Then after lots of filing...
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040664.jpg
...it fits :D
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040727.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040729.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040730.jpg
Then I had to make the brackets.
I cut and filed 4 strips...
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040772.jpg
...drilled and scored them...
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040780.jpg
...and bent them by 90 degrees.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040791.jpg
This is how I left it this evening ... just before the camera battery died.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040795.jpg
Since that pic I used duct tape to stick the brackets and panel temporarily into the case and everything lines up very nicely indeed.
I'll take photos of that tomorrow :)
Looks epic. How much did the Aluminium cost and how large is it?
Seeing those pics make me realise that my lian li case is crying out for a custom front plate. That's some good work there Aidan. I'll be following this with interest......because I'm probably going to copy every aspect of it, otherwise I wouldn't have a clue! :D:thumb:

Wow, just gone and priced up Alu sheets and a 500mm x 250mm sheet of 1.2mm thick Alu will only cost me just short of £4. Quite shocked at that. It's rather cheap stuff isn't it.
Yea do it :D
I had to buy 2mm thick stuff which cost quite a bit more :P

Keeping it and either putting a custom switch array behind it or a fan controller.

Hmmmmm... Maybe you could have switches for cathodes behind there?
Are even planning on any cathodes?

Later on in the thread lots of the MDPC crew join in the fun and post their pics which are amazing :D
Yea I may need to re cover it. It had some slight scrapes from its previous owner anyway but I'm still being as careful as possible. All my work I do either on the workbench to the right of it or in the vice, just use the pool table for putting stuff on.

Can you see the lighting switch in the top right of the back plate on this pic?
http://www.million-dollar-pc.com/gallery-2009/murderbox/009/murderbox-02.jpg
Coz I'm doing something similar to that and wiring it to and LED control board like this one:
http://cdn2.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/files/detail1/aquatuning/83077_0.jpg
And lighting will be done via LEDs lighting up acrylic panels, and maybe some bare LEDs casting light into the case from somewhere.
No cathodes as LEDs produce a much better quality light and cathodes are really bulky in comparison.
Here's the pics of my brackets' temporary high tech mounting system:

I'm pretty sure you can yes :)
Not sure how effective they are as I've never tried any ha.
I'll be using white ones. Going to replace the HDD activity and power LEDs with white ones too.

Don't know how good a White led will look at the front.
I'm thinking of some of the Lian li LED strips. Expensive but good quality.

The black is the case
I don't think so, if you look on the left side of the case you'll see the brackets are holding the back plate with duct tape but are themselves taped to the side plate by balck tape.

It's just the light. It's all silver tape.
It will be screwed in with nuts and bolts eventually and the covers I made today will cover those up.

Are u even getting that side painted?
Ofc I am :D Both sides of it are visible and whats the point in asking them to mask of one side, will probs cost more.

I got the aluminium off ebay. It's 1000mm x 500mm x 2mm
Right, onto today's efforts:
Firstly I needed a coffee to start me off and I so happen to have this awesome Smartcafe mug that is also a coffee press. The baddie in avatar (the one with the scars on his face) has one in the film :D
Let it brew...

..and ta da! Press coffee in a mug!
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040832.jpg
In other news, I drilled some rivets.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040836.jpg
Motherboard tray now disassembled:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040847.jpg
I also made my drive bay covers, for some reason I forgot to take pics during fabrication. Must have got too wrapped up in my filing :D
Anyway, here's the result.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040864.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040865.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040875.jpg
I then went on to do the second one for the other side which turned out good too. I'll take nicer pics of the case with both of them in tomorrow when the light is back. I haven't yet made a mounting system for them but it will probably involve some spacers that stick onto the cover and maybe screw into drive bay screw holes. I'll work something out. I would ideally want it to be removable from the inside via screws.
p.s. Aluminium dust makes your hands look old

About half of it I think, maybe more. But it's not one whole bit anymore as I've been cutting different sized rectangles into it. I will have some spare by the time I'm done though I think.
From a website, I've got 500x500x3 at £17 a sheet. Might get one of those and a 500x1000x3 because Im crap compared to you :)

Nooo 3mm is far too think seriously you won't be able to do anything with it. 2mm is hard enough haha.
2mm is what is used through the interior of a tj07 anyway.
Need to look for the grade of aluminium too. Certain grades wont bend or cut coz they are well 'ard.
ooer.. lots to consider. is the link that i posted ok? (i mean whether the alu is suitable!)
ooer.. lots to consider. is the link that i posted ok? (i mean whether the alu is suitable!)
Not sure. The grade I bought is NS4 5251 and it's been good. Really sturdy yet easy enough to work with.
Here's what I bought:

That's some good work there Aidan :thumb:. I'm lucky in the respect that the V2000 Alu thickness is 1.2mm. Ordering a sheet of 500mm x 500mm after this post. Works out at £4. :D

Damn youuuu! haha
2mm stuff takes ages to file down if I cut too big :(
would it be better to go with 2mm or 1.2?
2mm for a tj07 so it matches the rest of the case.
It looks and feels awesome too.
You could go in between and get 1.5mm as well, though as said, if modding then get whatever matches your case.
I have used a bit of 1.5mm in the case I am making and it is still nice and sturdy I would say.
Nice log going here anyway. Not sure I would have used a knife for cutting myself. That must have been hard work.

You use the knife to make a deep score then bend along it to snap it. You get a perfectly straight cut, just need to file it smooth.

I might give it a try sometime then. :)
Seems like it would take longer than just taking a hacksaw to it and then filing it, but maybe the result would be better?

Think how quick it'll take me to score it with a Stanley knife and then snap it, it being only 1.2mm thick.
Ahhh, bliss....
Took forever :( like 5mins of scoring and 5mins of bending/snapping then like half an hour of filing then for the side covers another 30mins of bending and an hour of filing. Then there's sanding on top of that too.
No pain no gain :P

Lots of little scratches like these need moar sanding :P
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040927.jpg
There is a gap like this one with the other cover too so the folds on both of them need beating flat.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z305/aidanz2007/tj07%20Build/P1040923.jpg
Did you bend that aluminium? How???
A deep score with a stanley knife followed by a bit of bashing along the score with a chisel which starts off the fold then the rest I did by gradually bending it with the score on the inside using a vice and an occasional tap with a rubber hammer. As the fold got near to 90 degress I placed a bit of wood over the metal and hit that with a harder hammer to get the fold to a sharper angle without the hammer damaging the metal.
Then I did A LOT of filing to get the wavy bits that the vice caused out and sanded it smooth. Still needs a bit of work as I mentioned in the update but so far so good.
The deeper your score the sharper the bend will be but you need to be careful not to score and chisel too much as the aluminium will snap when you bend it :/
Cool, I didn't think it would be easy to bend with it being 2mm thick. It looks good though. :thumb:

I'll hopefully get chance to perfect them later this week.

Seriously, brilliant pictures- these are making me want to build right now!
What will you be using it for?

With the brackets I made. You can see them in some pics. The brackets will be stuck to the front piece using double side sticky foam probably and then screwed into the drive bays.

any reason for it? or is it just for aesthetics?
Partly aesthetics coz having the three big holes there sucks really and with the cover it matches the clean look I've got going on elsewhere.
But it's also there as a surface for my pass-through fittings to be fitted to.

Thats looking pretty sweet....... gimme?
how are you attatching the side bit of aluminium to the case?
Still working on that but it will probably be a strip of alu folded into a u shape with some holes drilled in and nuts stuck behind the holes. Then one side of the U will stick to the panel via double side sticky foam the the other side will screw in to a drive bay with screws going from inside the drive bays and into the nuts mounted in the U shaped brackets.
I hope that made some form of sense haha. Basically I will make spacers that stick onto the inside of the covers and screw into the drive bay mounting holes.
*brain explodes*

Thanks :) 2mm alu is difficult to fold cleanly and there's still some work that needs doing to make it perfect ;)
Thats looking pretty sweet....... gimme?
Haha, not for a million squid lol. It will be priceless to me when its done. Always wanted to do a proper project like this with nothing half arsed :)
if u made a large enough u, you could drill a bi and use the 5.25 bay holes to screw it in. Is that what u were saying?
if u made a large enough u, you could drill a bi and use the 5.25 bay holes to screw it in. Is that what u were saying?
Yea that's what I'm saying :)
My problem is that I can't screw the brackets on from the outside as once I've stuck the panel to them I wont be able to unscrew the brackets anymore.
So that's what I was saying about the nuts. They will be stuck behind holes I'll drill in the U so it can be screwed in from the inside if that makes sense haha.
An example of something similar is how the drive bay bits screw into the midplate of a tj07. Have a look in yours now :)

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU! you tempted me. I couldn't resist. I got out of bed into the cold, turned the light on (which hurt my eyes) and went over to my TJ. I couldn't see it so I had to go back to my bed and bend over (which hurt my back and knees) to get a maglite 3D (which hurt my hand coz it was heavy and cold) and walk over to my TJ again (which hurt my legs as they were frozen) and look. I then had to go back to my bed and replace the maglite (which again hurt my back and knees) and then climb back into bed. I tried to pull the duvet back over me but it was twisted and I has to turn the light on again (which hurt my eyes again) to find out that my toe was caught in the duvet (which hurt my toe) and I had to untangle it (which hurt my toe even more) and then pull the duvet back over me (which somehow hurt my elbow!) and then I finally leaned over to turn the light off and I slipped a bit and I moved my leg over the other (which castrated me)
So to sum it up - you minorly inconvenienced me... And I'm cold! FU! :D:p
But yeah, I saw it. Are you using a nut instead of the two screws then?
LOL!!! I'm very sorry!
I just had the thought of using some of the mobo stand offs the case came with as I'm sure ill have more than I need for an atx board.
So a U shaped bracket with a stand off sandwiched between it and screws will go from inside of the drive bays and screw into the stand off inside the U :)

I forgive you ! :D:P
Love the standoff idea! Personally I think the nut would work a bit better for simplicities sake as it will be difficult to retrieve the standoffs if you need to dismantle a part of it as they are guaranteed to fall of meaning you will have to keep taking it off in order to retrieve it. You'll have to be careful and patient to get the standoff to work.
Also, you should have about 20ish standoffs left.
Yea it will need a bit of thought and patience but I like the idea coz they will use standard screw sizes that i already have some of whereas a nut might not be of a size I have a matching screw for :/
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using Tapatalk
You need to get yourself a set if nuts to match your screw then!
I think the standoffs will be better as thet are approximately the right size for the gap :)

Good luck! Keep us posted. I have most o the money needed but will probably wait for you to finish your mods first so j know what to get :)
OCOK have said that I can buy a 580 block and if it doesn't fit, I can return it :)
There are officially atleast 3 epic employees there. The rest...
Things to do atm are the brackets for the side covers, drill hole in back plate for lighting switch and mount my Hammond box covering the front panel PCB.
Not much else I can do until I get my new watercooling stuff.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using Tapatalk
When do you expect to finish?
Are you going to do the build then take apart to powdercoat?
Ill put any components in that I need to for measuring stuff like where to drill holes for pass through fittings etc but I wont put the full build together until after powdercoating.
I'm getting the new watercooling stuff next month so I should have everything ready for powdercoating later that month or early the next month.

It came with an alphacool plexi top which I was intending to replace with an acetal EK top so it matches my blocks. But with it sitting here in front of me now the plexi is really nice so I kind of want to keep it. Decisions decisions...
How much did u get that for?
A pic with fittings in for the lulz.
Won't be these 45 degree ones btw, these are just the only ones i have atm.

I'm sometimes a bit hit and miss with photography but i do try :)
Getting the lighting right is the hard bit i find :P
Like if you compare that last pic of my pump to the pics of some case parts in 'UPDATE 3' of my original post. They are both taken on the same background (a tj07 side panel) and in the same place but the ones of the case parts came out so much better.
Still lots to learn :P
Pump tested and pump is awesome :D

With your new pump purchase, does this mean you have an old one spare? ;)
The build is coming on nicely!
I will have an old one spare yes. A Phobya DC12-400, 800lph with 4m head pressure.
It's good but not the quietest. However I have it on a fan controller with the knob turned to half and that makes it almost silent but it still pushes water around fine and temps aren't effected much :)
Used it for around 4-5 months I think and only used distilled water.
EDIT:
Actually I think it's 3-4 months. I've not been watercooling my PC for very long.

A tiny update. No pics of this yet but while testing my new pump it kept starting and stopping. I found that the 3pin connector had been previously removed very badly and the wires weren't properly connected to the pins and as a result they had corroded due to heat and weren't making a propper connection.
To temporarily fix this I've snipped the corroded pins and twisted the wires to the wires of another 3 pin connector.
Eventually I'll properly fix it by recrimping :)

Very nice, got to love the TJ07! Shame they are stopping (or have stopped) production.

Where did you hear that? Coz I'm sure they're not stopping production. I got mine new this month and it is the recently updated version called the tj07-s. Also there are new murdermod products coming out soon that are being developed directly with silverstone so they wouldn't discontinue the case given that Charles will be selling lots of the new tj07 murderboxes and murdermod parts.

Maybe it was old news that I heard then. Murdermods do have quite a small turn over and it wouldn't be hard for them to buy up a large shipment of cases, but you could be right.
I'd be tempted to get another one if they did stop production, although not fussed if they are carrying on.

they would want the TJ11 to take over though. at £450!
That case is aimed at a slightly different market I think. A more extreme user haha, have you seen the size of it!
Also its a really weird concept. It follows the same watercooling features of the tj07 but then adds in their air cooling features from the fortress series like the big 180mm fans. Either market wont want both.

Considering the price tag that is unlikely! :thumb:
The TJ11 is absoluter crap IMO. Who would want all he input cables coming out of the top?
I wish there ws TJ07 with 10 expansion slots and some more 5.25's

Well all of silverstones cases are in the high end price bracket anyway.

Yea I still prefer the simplicity of the tj07 over the added features of the tj11.
Most build logs I've seen that use a tj11 the person has had to work out ways of working around things like the 180mm fans in the bottom and stuff whereas with the tj07 being so basic and empty of features you're free to add anything you like without having to work around stuff you don't like.
Great for people like us who want to make the case unique :)

The inverted design actually works really well, especially for aircooling graphics cards. Sure there are downsides, but it is how cases should be designed considering that hot air rises. I've got a RV02 and it works wonders for temps, the cables can all be grouped togther so you've just got one lot of cables coming out the back. That way it is nice and tidy and they are not spread over the place.
Where the TJ07 comes into its own is with watercooling.

true. I just had the idea of having all my fat, ugly cables coming out of the top of my case!

Ohhhhhhhh! That makes sense. I want a TJ11!!
The problem with the 07 is that my mobo is awkwardly positioned so one of the pcies is wasted and I can no longer have my graphics card spaced out properly. When I first bought the case back when i was so so so so so so so stupid, I saw 7 expansion slots and thought great! Three gfx cards and a sound card! But now Silverstone screwed that all up!

You'll find that is exactly the same in almost all 7 slot cases.
EDIT:
If you fit a waterblock to the card its ok ;) especially if you switch the bracket to a single slot one.

Really? I thought it was just a design error!
I've already got a single slit bracket for my 8800 so will fit that with liquid cooling. I wish I had one more expansion slit!!!
Yea my antec is the same.
You have to get the right bracket for the card or the ports wont fit. And some cards use both slots for ports.
With water cooling the distance between cards doesn't matter anyway.
And also the reason the card wont fit in that slot is coz of the support brackets at the top and bottom of the mobo tray near the back. You can modify the bottom one to allow a card to fit by just cutting a chunk out of it.

I agree but with the tj11 they seem to have merged the two markets, air and water. If I'm watercooling I don't want the air cooling features though, they get in the way. Similarly if I'm air cooling why do I need the big radiator space at the bottom?

Spent a bit of time tonight perfecting my drive bay covers.
First off, I needed a bottle of polish lager.

Basically I placed a small piece of MDF over the exposed aluminium and hit that with a mallet, causing the metal to conform to the straight edge of the wood without the mallet damaging the metal's surface. I also sanded out the deeper marks that were there in my last pics.
Here's the result:

sounds like effort
Yea the brackets will require a bit of thinking :P
I'm a bit confused - could you explain it a bit more what you're trying to do? I thought you were having ll the lighting done in the front
I'm thinking of having a design laser cut into the front yea. Then a piece of acrylic lit by LEDs will go behind that to light it up.
Thinking of doing the same thing with the midplate too.
I'm still working out ideas for the lighting :P
ah. I've got a better idea. Why don't you use some UV reactive acrylic...
Coz I'm not much of a UV fan really. And I want white light.
Also I'm considering not having the designs at all and just keeping everything as smooth flat panels and making that the feature of the build. Means I'll have to get everything to a very high quality of finish if I'm to pull that off though :P

Spent some time sorting out my pump's power cable that had been ruined by the last owner.
I cut off the corroded pins and soldered on new ones as I don't have a crimper.
Then I put the rpm sensor wire that previously had it's own connector into the 3rd hole in the power 3pin plug. It was a lot longer than the power cables though so I had to cut and resolder to the right length.
Seeing as the blue rpm wire was originally separate from the power wires I thought I'd keep it that way and sleeved the power wires in black and the rpm wire in grand bleu then wrapped the blue wire around the black one.
Here's the result:

p.s. I also have some red LEDs that I can put in and take a pic. I didn't bother this time coz red won't go with the rest of my build but I'm interested to see what it looks like haha.
How are the LED's powered?
Can you see the molex connection in the first pic in the background? Well basically its a molex to 2 LEDs that came with some shrouds I bought.
The power going into the molex is this power adapter I have that turns mains into a single molex connection. Very handy for testing :)

Just something I found in my house lol. No idea when or if I bought it, didn't even think they existed :P
Supplies up to 2 amps so at 12v thats 24w which is why I can also use it for testing my pump as that only draws 18w :)
Yay :D
any idea where to get one at all? Do you know what it's called?
I found this on eBay:

You'll need a kettle lead but seeing as you own a functioning computer you have one of those already ;)
Think I prefer the red actually
