View Full Version : Feedback on Website
So, as some of you know, I run my own technology blog.
Initially it was a bit of fun while I was living overseas, something to keep me occupied.
But towards of 2010 I started thinking I might be able to make a profit out of it so I added some ads, started emailing companies and increased my output quite a bit.
What I'm after now is some feedback on the look and feel of the site.

What do you like, what don't you like? Do you come across any problems with certain pages or using certain browsers?
I welcome any criticism, no matter how fierce!

That looks alright on my screen
Is it too bright, too strong a colour?
So the green text boxes are supposed to cover the images?
yeah it looks like they are - same in FF3.6 ... looks horrible imho.
Sorry to say it ;)
Also... how many scripts ? Noscript had a field day :D

Yeah, I just looked at the source. :D You may also want to externalise some of the scripts, just for tidiness's sake.
And the fact that it'll speed up load times and save you a bit of bandwidth.

Not sure if I can do that easily as it's all done on Wordpress.
I'll have a think about it though.
So the green text boxes are supposed to cover the images?
Yes, that's part of the current theme.
Any ideas on ways I could improve the look?
Ok if the text boxes are supposed to cover the images....what's the point of having the images? ...I would either move them or make them opaque ...just look out of place...
Content looks good...

I guess I thought it looked better with than without.
Thanks for the thumbs up on the content :)
make the text boxes much smaller, and above or below the images.. over the top doesn't look right for me.

Your site.... Your choice ...my opinion lol:thumb:

Not sure I can that easily, but will give it some thought!
There are some really bright guys on here when it comes to scripting... I'm not one lol... I'm sure if you ask the will happily help with the scripting and offloading.

Looks good first sight.
But the headlines:
Modern Warfare 3 Trailer Shows Attack on London Underground (http://www.techmadeeasy.co.uk/2011/05/24/modern-warfare-3-trailer-shows-attack-on-london-underground/)
are on the big side. (And why all those capital letters?)
And maybe too many of them on the front page.
Hard to know how you can make money out of it. There are just too many sites out there struggling to earn a crust. And they cost nowt.
Might help you to sell web designing.
(And why all those capital letters?)
English wasn't my strong subject at school, I though titles had to have capital letters?

Why the sarcasm?
That's smifis humour...not sarcasm...lol
I take the point on capital letters, still don't see the need for insults though....

He's also very wrong, pretty much all style guides say you should use capital letters in titles, with obvious exceptions:
http://jon.henshaw.me/rules-for-capitalization-in-a-title/
With the possible exception of 'shows' that title is fine. :thumb:
EDIT- dunno what I'm thinking, show is a verb so it should be capitalized as well. :picard:
Not if you wanted a grade better than an E
Get an E, did we?

Thanks.
I must say I've mulled it over a few times. A lot of the sites I go to only capitalize the first word of the title.
I guess it is personal preference, I'll give it some thought.

There's no right or wrong. Just ask yourself what it looks like. I don't like. Nor do most magazines and newspapers.
No "first caps".
Some publications agree with you. It just looks ugly to me.
They have their place. People sometimes use them for book titles. Or song titles.
This is even a national thing. Americans are more prone to this sort of thing. That may be a good thing if they are going to shovel money into your pockets.

It depends really, casual journalism (such as the blog in question) tend to use it a lot more than news based journalism. Guess it's just more trendy. :p

I love it, you prefer the words of an American whose claim to fame is as "a sponsor of The Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee"?
I refer you to pages from people with more understanding of this typography caper:
Financial Times (http://www.ft.com/home/uk)
the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/)
or, for those of a rightward leaning:
Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/)
Then there is my old home:

I could go one, but why rub salt into the wounds.
Live examples wipe the floor with "style guides" from know nothings.

I was always taught "Title case" which is: Capitalise all important words in titles so leave words like 'of', 'and', 'the' etc. in lower case.
But as has been said, casual styles like blogging are more befitting a casual style i.e just cap the first word, or don't cap anything.
as it's a third party wordpress theme, you should make sure there's no hidden base64 encoded cack.
see this post for details (it refers to free themes, but applies to any third party developed theme) http://wpmu.org/why-you-should-never-search-for-free-wordpress-themes-in-google-or-anywhere-else/
No Offence intended, I have a weird humor at times, :/

Interesting read, thanks.
I couldnt help but notice the title of the article....
Too much "going on" for me. I like my websites clean & clear; linear in a sense. This just seems "crammed".
The 'Recent Posts' column is obviously important, but it just seems brushed to the side. 50% of your real estate is wasted on the parts people aren't going to be drawn to. Does the 'Recent Q&A' really deserve it's own column? Why can't it sit beneath the random posts?
If you go onto the page of an article, the proportions are much better. Your homepage should be more like this!
I agree with the green banners too. They should at least be knocked down to cover the 'posted by' section. The images are rendered useless.
It also loads very, very slow for me.

website looks far too busy for me, should be clean and simple. I know the reasons for advertising but i think you have too much on there, especially the main one at the top of the website, looks unprofessional and taking away the impact from your website.
i agree with the green boxes, do not seem right at all, as others have said just making the images rendered useless really.
I do really like the social slider on the left hand side tho, very smooth and handy.
overall it seems like a good website just needs cleaning up in areas so not as busy on the eye and focus more on the content and less on the advertising IMO.
Find the image used for the background of those green headings, open it in photoshop, decrease opacity to around 75%, re-upload and you'll see the image beneath without losing the readability of the heading text :)
Or if you don't do that you could give the images you use in those bits some space at the top that's roughly equivalent to the height of your average heading. Coz the headings are always at the top it will make it look like the image is below the heading without you having to edit the theme.
I personally like how it looks, lots of little lighting details that give a realistic sense of depth to it. Plenty of CSS3 in it too, always good to see new technologies being pushed forwards :)
What theme is it?

Like the idea ref. opacity of the titles, I'll have a play on my dev system later on.
The theme is TheSource by Elegant Themes.
You could do it in CSS too using the opacity rule (opacity:0.75; for example) but that will reduce the opacity of the heading text too if applied to the whole element :P
Best done in images me thinks :)

I take your point on the layout, I'll try and redo the homepage so that there is a single sidebar.
The loading time is an issue, first time visitors will have problems, but repeat visitors not so much as I have a caching plugin in effect on the site.
Mr. Grapes
25-05-11, 11:35
WP Super cache doesn't distinguish between first-time visitors and return visitors, it just caches on the server side, so it doesn't have to keep re-running PHP and SQL queries, unless:
a. the content has changed
b. the cache time has expired
c. it's a registered user and registered users skip the cache.
it doesn't make much difference to client-side load times unless the server is under heavy load

Oh, ok :)
In any case, it does reduce the monthly bandwidth of the site by about 30-40% so I suppose it must help.
I'm going to struggle to get the number of scripts down, they're mostly from my ad partners :(
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded.
I've taken a few steps to try and improve the website. I've cut out a couple of scripts already and will continue to weed the others.
I've also cut down the amount of content shown on the homepage to cut down load times and make it easier to digest.
I will take a more in depth look at how the content is presented on the homepage, I'm not sure I can do anything about the width of the columns due to the whole platform being based on a set width, but I will try.
Again, many thanks, this is quickly becomming a big thing for me, I'm seeing month-on-month increases in traffic of between 50 and 100% which is great.
I think the rounded edges really let the feel of the site down. If they were only very slightly rounded or not rounded at all, they'd look a lot better. Also the "..." after site map etc on the top need to go. Other than that I think you're okay :thumb:
Umar
looks good imo - try giving the green (top) boxes round edges

just an extra 2p on the green boxes...
looking at the theme in chrome, they are pure CSS elements, specifically this one:
wp-content/themes/TheSource/style.css line 126
.recent-cat .entry.orange h3 {background:#a8d728; width: 207px; text-shadow: 1px 1px 1px #83a81f;}
(I'm not sure why it's in the "orange" section and not the green one, but there you go.... maybe chrome's inspect element is lying to me)
it wouldn't take much to reduce the opacity, see this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/637921/opacity-of-background-but-not-the-text

I can explain that, the original theme had multi coloured boxes, I was feeling lazy so just changed all the hex colour codes to the same as the green one. I'll take a look at the opacity thing :)
Thanks for the help.
First thought as I load up the home page: what is this site? My eyes immediately go to the logo and the caption beneath it. "Your Guide to getting things done." Hm, fairly ambiguous, but this is "Tech Made Easy". Ah, so this is "Your Guide to getting tech things done". Great, my toaster's broken, I could use this! I jest, of course, but this is my genuine thought process as I go through the site. It is only when I scroll aaaaaall the way to the bottom that I see: "Tech Made Easy is a UK based technology blog focussing on the latest news and reviews of all aspects of computing and consumer electronics. We also offer a range of how-to guides and a Q&A service which answers specific questions from readers." Personally, I would take some of this, doesn't have to be all of it, and put it near the top. The reason I say this is that, to me, it is not immediately apparent what the website is, there are so many different things to look at at once, I can't tell within a reasonable amount of time whether this website will contain what I am looking for. Yes, you could argue that the "About this site" button will lead the user to a more detailed page, but that requires an active interest by the user, who just wants an instant impression of the site, and is an extra click in the workflow; an extra click just like the "Back" button on the browser, and you don't want a 50/50 choice between them.
My eyes go down the page. I get to the menu bar. Nice intuitive dropdown menus, very nice. Personally I would put PC above handheld as I think this will be clicked on more, but you know your business. I move along the menu bar, How-To, Linux, Mac, Mobile - wait, no Windows? But I have a Windows PC! Oh this is the wrong site, Back. It took me a few more seconds to finally spot "Windows" on the far right of the bar. All Operating Systems should be together, the natural workflow for humans is not to look randomly all over the page, it's a logical, across-the-page flow. Also if I looked at this on my mobile and could only view a small part of the page at a time, I would see Linux and Mac and stop before getting close to Windows.
There's no consistency between the order of "News, Reviews, Gaming, How-To" in the menu bar, and the boxes below (incidentally, how do I know what those are? Are they latest articles, or featured articles?) If you have these in the order "News, Reviews, Gaming, How-To" in the four boxes, this is the order in which they should appear in the menu bar. As for the boxes themselves, as others have said, the text is over the image. Don't delete the image, just make the box longer; you definitely want to keep the images, they're easier for the mind to interpret.
The colours of the page work well together. The Search feature is a bit too hidden though, it's taken me a good 20 minutes to notice it for the first time. The layout, however, is too busy. If you have any way to remove that Ad column, do it. It is taking up far too much valuable space and draws a similiar amount of attention than the Recent Posts column, and far more than the Q&A column. Rather than have "Q&A: How can I Make my PC Queiter(<-Spelling + no need for capital M or Q)? Cooling is important, etc.", split it up to "Q: How can I Make my PC Quieter? A: Cooling is important, etc." Draw attention to the questions. Otherwise it's a wall of text.
Only other thing I've got so far is that on the Ask a Question page, the e-mail address field has an embedded style, other fields do not. On my browser, anyway :)
Hope this helps, I'd write more but I should get back to work :P

Can't really do much about the name at this point, but I could change the tag-line, I'll give that some though.
The categories are alphabetical unfortunately, I can't do much about that, much as I'd like to.
Not sure what you mean about the consistency of the four articles at the top, they are simply the latest articles in each of those categories.
I will be looking at a way to expand that area and puch the titles above the thumbnails, or making it semi-transparent so that the images show beneath.
Search bar, can't do a lot about that except maybe remove it from it's position in the title bar and add it to one of the sidebars.
With the advertising; I have to have them all at the moment unfortunately :( I'm just not making enough money from the site to cover the hosting charges. The larger CPM networks aren't interested yet and the smaller ones are ripping me off :(
With the Q&A stuff, I'm trying to find a way to put the questions in bold, but I haven't been succesful so far :( it's a third party plugin so very difficult to find a way to do it. In terms of spelling, that's my bad
Can't really do much about the name at this point, but I could change the tag-line, I'll give that some though.
Oh I wasn't suggesting changing the name hehe, even the tag-line doesn't really need changing, my point was that there could perhaps be something else up there to really punch home what the site is about. Think of viewing it from the viewpoint of someone who has never seen it.
The categories are alphabetical unfortunately, I can't do much about that, much as I'd like to.
That's really unfortunate, as I think that's a major downside to the page and could really do with being changed and placed in a logical order.
Not sure what you mean about the consistency of the four articles at the top, they are simply the latest articles in each of those categories.
What I mean by that was: on your menu bar you have these four, amongst the others, in the alphabetical order:
Gaming How-To News Reviews
The grey boxes are in the order:
News Reviews Gaming How-To
There's no consistency between the two. They should appear in the same order.
As for them being the latest articles; you know that, I now know that, but who else knows that? If they're the latest articles, tell someone ;) If I go on and see those, I might, and probably will, assume they're Featured Articles, and you do want to distinguish between Featured and Latest as Featured will give a certain expectation of quality to the user.
I will be looking at a way to expand that area and puch the titles above the thumbnails, or making it semi-transparent so that the images show beneath.
Don't make it semi-transparent, takes away from it. :) Go for expanding the area, in my opinion. :)
Search bar, can't do a lot about that except maybe remove it from it's position in the title bar and add it to one of the sidebars.
Not a major issue, just making it white or green may make it stand out a lot more :)
With the advertising; I have to have them all at the moment unfortunately :( I'm just not making enough money from the site to cover the hosting charges. The larger CPM networks aren't interested yet and the smaller ones are ripping me off :(
Yeah that's what I thought :( If you can move them to the bottom it would probably help a lot, but I know you may not have much leeway here. Certainly worth looking at in the future though. Going onto the site and having your attention immediately drawn to a pair of Russian breasts doesn't do much for the rest of the site :thumb:

I mean the e-mail address field, or box, itself appears to have an embedded style to it, the others have a plain style; go for all in one or all in the other, it's down to consistency again. :)
Replies above :)
Ah, I understand your points now :)
I'd love to do away with the boobs completely, unfortunately one of my ad networks allows this quite easily, the other doesn't.
As soon as they give me my first payout I'm going to switch, until then my visitors will have to put up with Russian boobs :(

Tell me about it. Honestly, who clicks these things?

I can't read the logo without tilting my screen... I also think you have chosen a weird colour choice... or the sharing thing on the right hand side...
What sort of colour scheme do you think would be better?
Those boxes on top of images spoil it. Esp the one with text in the image too. Why not put the text on the actual images or make the boxes transparent to a great degree (and not puke coloured lol ) It works down the page, not as intrusive..makes me wonder why dupicate up top where it's not really needed?
The screen I'm looking at has too many levels of menus up top, there's very little content to tempt me to stay or draw me in, I have to scroll to see that...most people don't bother. Something has to grab their attention within 2 seconds on average to stop them leaving...and it takes some graft to get them to visit so it's daft to let them leave really isn't it?
If you want to make money and develop this site, I'd try and get a copy of The Social Media Bible by Lon Safko, maybe lucky and get it from a quid bookshop, the title's a bit misleading as it deals with all the things needed to run a site such as this...like all tech books it's a bit expensive but worth it for a small business.
I like the site, easy to read and good content. I just think the layout could use a little tweaking.
Shared your competiton n FB ..maybe a share button would be cool on the relevent pages ?
Good luck.
Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions.
In response I've done the following:
- rationalised the number of 3rd party scripts running, pages should load quicker now.
- In response to the "featured" banner and the text over the top of the thumbs, I've done away with it completely as it wasn't really needed and the users can see the latest content straight away.
- I'm trying to frig a way of getting the categories re-ordered, rather than them be alphabetical, more work on this to be done.
- I can't easily change the column widths on the homepage, but I've reduced the size of the thumbnails so that more text is visible.
- I've removed the thumbnails when viewing posts, I think this makes the posts more readable, and reduces load times.
- Pictures are now being reduced in file size and hosted on my web server rather than on Dropbox, so they should load quicker and should display on all systems (some users experiencing problems with Dropbox hosted photos on work IT systems)
What do people think?

I'm also trying to teach myself Wordpress theme design in my downtime, not that I get much :). Hopefully by the end of the year I'll have designed my own theme from the ground up, rather than modifying an existing one.
Just an update for anyone that's interested.

I've tried to take on as many of your suggestions as possible, I know there are still issues with banners covering up thumbnails and with the Q&A column, I'm working on them.
In the meantime though, I've been accepted by one of the bigger ad networks so there are no more boobs on the site and my CPM figures are looking more healthy.
So thanks to everyone for their suggestions, they're much appreciated :thumb:
I would bring back the banner and move the Q&A, personally. :)
Once the text over images is sorted, that'll look good :)

Im working on the Q&A section, its not as simple as just moving it, i need to sort out the framework underneath so that there isnt just a big gap, not as easy as it seems :(
Right, sorry to drag this up to the top again, but I wanted to share the product of your comments and criticism:

The design has been simplified and straightened out a lot.
There are now only two columns on all the pages: Content and sidebar.
Lots of external scripts have been removed, there are still some though.
I think it looks better and loads quicker, what are your thoughts?
