View Full Version : Google Chrome!
Google has now brought out Google Chrome! Its different to say the least.
http://tools.google.com/chrome/intl/en-GB/why.html?hl=en-GB
I'll use the best browser I can find, so I'll give chrome a try. If its better than firefox then I'll use it.
My first 5 minute impression is that its very good. I'm going to use it for a few days and see what its really like.
One thing I do miss already is my firefox noscript plugin :( and the spellchecker wont let you add words to the dictionary.

dust hasnt even settled and people are off knocking it
There not really knocking it, there just mentioning the issues with the BETA, obviously there are gonna be issues and its there first shot at a browser.
I cant wait to see it in its alpha form
EDIT: Although i must say that most other google software "google desktop and toolbar" are a pain in the ***
correct me if i'm wrong but alpha comes before beta??
Oh yeah :P you know what i meant fool!!!
It looks promising... but try opening several tabs - you get number of tabs+1 instances of chrome.exe processes...
Right now it looks like a simple version of firefox, with a better architecture (one tab hanging wont crash the browser, mucho useful) you can also use the task manager inbuilt to see which sites are using most memory etc.
In all, some nice gimmicks and marketing, but I can't yet see any reason to use it over firefox... the 1 in 1000 times my firefox crashes, it just opens the tabs straight back up again. Lets see how it developes.
As for internet explorer vs firefox vs chrome... I'd guess that IE won't lose market share to chrome, rather that firefox will. Those who are still using IE clearly haven't even found the more mainstream firefox yet, how likely are they to find chrome (although it's on the google site, it's hardly big news unless you read the blogs)... rather they're targetting it at nerds and developers, think the same people who use firefox with firebug extension.
Yeah i don't think i'll be trying it out till it gets relesed properly.
Im gonna install it later just to check it out but then remove it, im not a fan of having BETA software on my computer.
Just curious as to what theyve come up with

The process per tab is deliberate to offer more isolation and stability. One tab crashes ? The browser wont.

As they say, Chrome wasn't built in a day...

I have 20+ tabs open at once on firefox, I wouldn't like to have 20+ processes slowing my pc down
Also when a single tab does crash, it you manually right click on mozilla on bottom taskbar and force it to close - when you reopen it remembers all your tabs. You can then continue as before, closing problem tab if need be.
ALSO google is well known for having full access to your gmail accounts and NEVER deletes any of your mails regardless of you putting your entire inbox in the trashcan. They would no doubt record EVERY site you go on and keep the records forever with SPY CHROME!
they said that it would NEVER crash... They were wrong :D

Are you sure?
Still not tried it yet, google are great, but it will probably try and install every other peice of google software.
What do i need google on my desktop for? or a google toolbar?
Google Picasa is very good for photographs
Doing what with photographs? Im already quite experienced with photoshop, been using it since number 4
And to just look at images i use windows picture and fax viewer
organising every photo on your hard drive, basic editing etc... not bad to say it was free
its great for emailing people pics via your Gmail account.
in picasa easy click select interface and then emails and resises to your chosen res!
Well its been out for a while. What's people thoughts on this? I for one love it! Use it as my main browser!
firefox still, nothing compares
Waiting for chrome to get the plugins that I use in firefox and then I'll seriously consider it.
Its true, chrome still lacks quite a bit for me to want to switch to it, slightly faster loading websites is always a good sign though

You guys should stick chrome on the dev channel, it does most bits firefox does plus its twice as quick on my system both opening the app and loading/browsing sites.
Yeah except it lacks alot of stuff you can get for Firefox
For one, no "No-Script" which is a big must for me
I love no script now i've started to use it and adblock :D
Have been using Chrome as my main browser now for a few days since finally instaling my retail w7. must say seems quicker than firefox. :D

I've taken a look at Chrome and it does looks good, but i'll stick with Firefox for now, until no script appears for Chrome.
I've been seeing a lot of billboard ads for Google Chrome popping up around Manchester the past couple of weeks or so. :)
Not bad at all but i'll stick with Firefox for the time being, just used to using it - does everything i want.
Firefox, simply for the plugins.
I didn't use plug-ins for Firefox really so Chrome has been awesome for me :p
I've been using it since it first got released a good while ago as my main browser and it's been working great. It's starting to become more of a browser now with add-ins + themes so I'm hoping more people will take to chrome and develop some useful tools.

I've stuck with IE because I'm just used to it:(
I use Chrome though to see how my site renders in it.
Fast and efficient.
No loading bar though!:(
Does Chrome have an Ad-Block equivalent? I might give it a try..

I'm 99% sure there is a add on to do just that.
Chrome has spell check too btw;)

Hmmm Firefox has a spellchecker as well. You make it sound like a unique feature :P

Oh you poor thing. The rare times I had to switch to IE to open a page are thankfully becoming rarer. I find it cripplingly slow and ugly :/
I've used Chrome since it came out, before that I used Opera.
Never been a fan of Firefox, back on my old system it was a great big sluggish behemoth of a browser.
I like it lightweight.
On my Mac I've got Safari as my primary browser and Chrome as my backup.
Can't wait for android OS

I've been using it for the best part of 6 years. I find other browsers...ummm.... "Strange"

Why don't you install another browser at work?:)

I can't, don't have sufficient admin properties...
... I'm not even meant to be on the net! ;)

If you want to, install it on a USB Stick. There are portable chrome and firefox app's available.
http://portableapps.com/suite
I use that on my USB to organise the apps. Bit 'a eye candy too!

No problem, let us know how you get on with it. There's also a "Photoshop Portable" about!
In Vista you have to run it as Admin/Compatibility mode.

Just started using this rather than firefox...
is there anyway to have tabs for sites you visit at the top of the screen or do I have to go back to firefox again?
Andy

Booo!!
FF is rubbish! :p
I used Opera for years but got sick of having incompatibility problems.
I tried Chrome and hated it and have been using firefox happily ever since.
Anyone trying Chrome on OSX? More features than Safari, and runs WAY better than slow bloody firefox. I love it. If you get the dev build they've got Extensions in too, for stuff like Ad Block.
I use Chrome all the time at home, @ work unfortuantly it's ie8 :(
