Hi Lucy,

I have problems with my motherboard and to retrieve data from the HDD, I was advised to buy an ICY box IDE to USB2, this i bought recently but to my surprise I could not see any of the info stored in C Drive under Desktop & Document. it appears as another Drive E, but only with Data stored in the partitioned Drive with no operating system.

Why couldn't I see details of Drive C and what could I do to get to open Drive C of the HDD in the ICY Box?

To put more lights, Drive C has operating system Window 2000 and the laptop I connected to has Window 98. I think 2 different FAT systems: Could this be the problem, If so what can I do.

I have also tried the alternative by taking my HDD to a friend's computer to install it as a slave, but to my surprise, after connection, the power refused to turn on the system. The PSU did not provide power talkless the motherboard. I am concerned the motherboard of my friend's computer is not also damaged or faulty. This is a sort of problem that brought me to this stage. I upgraded my system to Win 2000 and becacause my modem was not compatible, I bought and installed a new modem and the PSU failed just on mere removing plug and repluging.

What is going on? and what is causing these problems? Please advise. how can I retrieve the details on desktop & Drive C?

Thanks for your help in this matter.

Hi Upjesus,

Try reading your HDD from an NTFS file system, a Windows XP machine or another win2k machine will 'probably' be running NTFS and should be able to read your old win2k file system.

Failing this, your failing system is probably caused by the hard disk and needs to be diagnosed.. Try googling software called \"powermax\" and run it in your friends machine to check your HDD, many forms including dos and windows powermax, take your pick.

Hope you get this sorted.

Good advice above.

Sounds like your hard drive is totaly stuffed to be honest mate.

Bit worried about the fact your using USB2 with Windows 98. That could be causing weird problems like this.

How important is the data?

Actually after reading your post again, you sure there isn't 2 hard drives in this sytem?

yeap you are going to need to use a system with NTFS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS) Support

Below is a link to a NTFS Driver for Win98, this will give you read only access to your Win2000 Drive, which will at least allow you to make a backup of your important data

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/NtfsWindows98.html

The above is free

If you need more features
http://www.mount-everything.com/ntfsw/
Might be worth a look

I has been a long time since I have used Windows 98, infact it was before USB Mass Storage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_mass_storage_device_class) was in popular use

However I found this link on Wikipedia
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

This should get the USB Mass Storgae up and running if it is not all ready

BTW can you see a \"E: Drive\" when the ICY Box is not plugged in?

this might be due to a Power cable either being loose or unplugged, just make sure all cables are secure. I've not heard of a Hard drive 'Killing' a Machine outright.

Hi all

Am thankful to all those who replied and those whose replies are forthcoming. I will surely try the suggested options and hope I will be luck.

If I should decide to change my motherboard, processor, & memory and use the same HDD with my data on, will I see those files, knowing for fact that the new components will need to install. Is this advisable?

Thanks

Theo

I keep reading your post and it confuses me.

When you put your hard drive in the Ice Box and hook it up to another machine.

You can see it in Windows but can't access (C:Documents and settings)

But you can see everything else?

Your 2nd questions sounds to me like, if you replace everything in your computer, Mobo + Memory + Processor can you just put your old HDD into the PC and everything will work.

No it wont. Most likely you will need to reinstall Windows 98 which means formatting the HDD.

I refer to your first response and like to put more light to reduce your confusion.

What I meant was, I put the HDD in the Icy Box, I could not see anything from Drive C which is the primary drive. All I could see is the partitioned drive D. The HDD was partitioned into 2 (C & D). C has the operating system Win 2000. D is just an ordinary storage drive. I hope this is a bit clearer.

My other question is, since I could not retrieve my files from Drive C if I change the faulty MOBO which means I will need to change the processor & memory, what can I do to save these data from C. ?

Right thanks i understand what you mean now.

Too me it sounds like the C: Partition on your hard drive is failing/dead.

Getting a new motherboard isn't going to bring your data back.

You can try pluggin the hard drive into another pc directly as a slave and seeing if you can run a chkdsk on it.

But it sounds like your data is FUBAR

I disagree with Belso about the data being \"FUBAR\" If one partition of a drive is corrupted beyond repair it is also likely that the other partition would be suffering similar problems.

My advice is to find a working computer and install your drive as the master and the ONLY drive in the system, then use the console recovery option from a windows 2000 or XP install cdrom allowing you to perform a \"chkdsk /r\" command on the drive just to make sure the drive doesnt have any corruption errors.

After doing that set your drive as a slave and use another drive containing an NTFS compatible operating system (XP/2000) as the master which when booted should detect both partitions allowing you to save your data.

Good Luck!

Hi
Thanks, the HDD data has been retrieved and stored in a CD. The machine itself is being taken to the professional for diagnosis.

I have another problem. trying to upgrade my laptop from win98 to 2000. I have the upgraded software for the componenents which are not compartible with win2000, in Zip file, in CD. Unfortunately I could not install the modem. I tried 3 ways; via My computer, Start-Run, and Setting - Add/Remove Hardware, the exe. file will not open for installation. How else can I do this?
