Hi.

I've just bought an AMD Athalon 64 X 2 6000+. I've fitted the processor onto my motherboard and i need to fit the heatsink and fan. It's a retail bought processor but i'm aware that i need thermal paste or a thermal pad or something before i fit the heatsink/fan. Do i need to buy some or is there already some kind of themal pad that comes with the processor? There's a dull grey square on the bottom of the heatsink... Is that something "thermal"?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Yeah it's the grey stuff on the bottom of the heatsink. It works just fine!

If your running at stock speeds then the stuff that comes with the heatsink is perfectly good.

Wise idea to double check like you did 8)

I think I saw a picture once of someone who used toothpaste or something. There was another of stickytape o.0

Might not have been me but I certainly tried it and it worked for a while :P

I have a log of it on another forum but it's down at the moment.

I remember when I was younger I took the heatsink off my 800Mhz Athlon (just to have a look) and saw this paste.

I thought "Well clearly thats insulating the chip" and promptly cleaned it off, never had an issue with it after.
