View Full Version : Reinstalling Laptop with no DVD drive
I have to reinstall an old Toshiba laptop with XP.
Here is the catch though, it has had its DVD drive replaced with a non Toshiba one, and this is one of the old toshiba laptops that will refuse to boot to a DVD drive thats not toshiba.
It doesnt have USB boot in the BIOS as its 100 years old.
How the hell do i reinstall this now?
(i can wait till tomorrow evening and borrow a USB-DVD drive from work, or a toshiba DVD drive. but i really want to get this working now
Any ideas?

@ seanbond
What model of Toshiba laptop is it? I think I know already, as USB ones don't work with certain Toshiba models.
Is it like the external optical drive that was supplied with the Toshibs Portege, with a small, sort-of click locking, slot interface? If it is and you can't solve your install issue by other means, I could maybe loan you the one I have.
I have a toshiba ts-l632 dvd drive kicking about mate if your stuck.

Naa its just the old Toshibas BIOSes are so gay it wont pick up the DVD drive to boot from, its internal. Cheers for the offer though

Naa its alright, i can rip a DVD drive from a old laptop from work tomorrow. i just wanted to get this done tonight. Thanks though
No worries mate the offer is still there if you have no luck.
Cheers mate, ill probs just throw it out the window. Its a 2Ghz Celeron with 768Mb RAM
Lol if it works mate it works, when they don't then use the window.
Its not working right now :D
The window is open too...
Lol it will be if you sort a drive out. Does it not have a partition to reinstall from.

Hard drive is dead :knock:
I thought the dvd drive was the problem not the hdd, so I take it you have put a new hdd in but can't install windows because of the dvd.
can you not take the hhd out of the lappy and connect to another comp to install xp?
my bad already been said
How gay is this
I get a external DVD Drive but that also doesnt work as you cant boot to anything USB
I get 2 x Internal ODD Drives and 1 of them is picked up by the BIOS, however it doesnt read the CD
I get a IDE > USB adapter so i could just start the install on another PC, and the adapter is bust -_-
Ill have to get another on Tuesday -_-

The optical drive you fit in has to be set as Master, not Cable Select; not all laptop optical drives are set as Master. Compaq optical drives used to be set as CS, for example.
Have you got a spare JAE to IDE adatper, to be able to check what the drive bus mastering setting, by connecting to a desktop machine? They are cheap enough to get from Maplins if you need one.
What model of Toshiba have you got? If you post this info, I can check if my external drive will fit your machine.

If your laptop dose note support USB booting and DVD drive dose not work than you should need to connet your laptop via serial cable to another computer than you can boot your laptop from network boot and install the Win Xp OS in your Laptop. Thanks
Another option, a bit time long winded, but would be to install XP on a spare drive in another PC, then create an image of it using Acronis, then use Acronis Universal Restore to restore the image to the laptop drive (you'll need a laptop IDE adaptor).
Then just put the laptop drive back in the laptop and install the drivers.

I was going to do that in the first place, but i had a dud IDE adapter.
Now i have a working one but the spare IDE laptop drive i have is also dead.
Will be fine once i get another lol
