View Full Version : Can i print through wireless router?
Hi guys,
Dont really know how to explain myself on this but here goes,
I want to print from my office computer but i dont have the means of printing from it as its not wireless and i dont have the cable for it.
Is it possible to hook the printer up to the router somehow which then my computer recognises the printer on the router so then i can print?
The misses laptop is wireless and from what i gather the laptop sends a signal through the router (as its on the internet) straight onto the printer.
If this isnt possible could it be possible if you could put me in the right direction so i can do so.
Thanks
Mache

Assuming the printer is a network printer, or attached to a PC and shared, you should be able to print to it from the wireless laptop.
You may need to make sure that Wireless isolation (Netgears name) is turned off.

Yes the laptop works fine with it, its my computer that i want to hook up to it. The computer is wired to the router, i just thought maybe there was a way to utilise the router's wireless to connect to the printer and print?
Whats 'Wireless Isolation'?

A wireless security feature, that at least netgear routers have.
If some one breaches your wirless network Wireless Isolation means that they will only have access to the Wan side of your router and not the lan side.
So no accessing your PCs connected by cables from the wireless
Wireless Isolation
If you want to open up wireless to outsiders (even just a neighbor), look for a wirelesss router with an isolation feature that blocks wireless-to-wired networking, most often found in "hotspot routers".
If you also have wireless devices, then look for a wireless router or access point with a wireless isolation feature that blocks peer-to-peer wireless networking

It can be done. All you need to do is share the printer on the PC which it is attached to and then search for the device (in whatever method you want, manually or automatically) and let Windows install the drivers for it. It takes around five to ten minutes to do this, provided it wants to work.
Just out of curiosity, what operating system are you using on the PC and your other half's laptop?

Basically when i search for a connection point it has a signal bar then a padlock over it, is this what you mean?
I think i understand :)

PC's on W7 64 Laptop's on WXP 32.
So i need to install the printer's CD onto the PC? Then search for the printer and let windows install the correct drivers?

I've never done it that way around before. It's easy enough to go from Win 7 to XP as 7 finds the drivers automatically. Just try and add the printer anyway. If it asks for drivers, feed it the CD. :)
You could always just insert the CD into the laptop and see if it has a "network attached" option. Ours does but it doesn't work. Yours may be different.
Wow that was so easy LOL
I just installed the Software onto my PC and walla, connected all up no problems and printed a test page.
Thought i would have issues, but was a breeze.
Sorry for making a un-needed thread.

Well it's not hard to share a printer over the network if you have a PC connected to it, and you have to have that PC turned on.
The harder part is to have a printer directly connected wirelessly without a PC as middleman. The solution requires money.

She can print anytime with hers and i can print anytime with mine now, aslong as the router is on anyone can print anytime regardless of wether mines on or hers ;)
