View Full Version : My cable management attempt...

I've been building computers for years, but I've never been much of one for getting the cable management sorted... I tend to just use a couple of cable ties to keep things out of the way of fans and that's it.

While rebuilding my rig after fitting the new CPU cooler, I decided that now I had extra space to work with I should give it a go... The power supply is half modular. There's about half a dozen cables that can't be removed (motherboard power, CPU 4 pin, seperate CPU 8pin, 2x PCIe 6/8pin etc), all except one of these is in use. You can see the one not in use (CPU 4 pin) coiled up in the bottom of the case.

In the shot above you can see just how crazy it is in there... This is actually the tidiest it's ever looked. The CPU power line isn't quite long enough to reach behind the motherboard (about 6cm too short) and is routed behind the GPU instead. The fan wire that can be seen going across the RAM has actually been tucked away so that it sits on top of the RAM slots instead of across them, and I cleaned a few remaining bits of dust out.

The backside is a complete mess... I've made a little effort to keep the worst of it in one place (behind the HDDs where there's a little more room), but to be honest I don't really care about this bit (nobody sees it once the side panel's on).

What you can't see is the pile of cables and molex connectors hidden underneath the HDDs, that are running most of the fans :p

with out covering up the cables that's about as good as you can get with that i think.

just a quick one on the cooling side i think you might want to try flipping that roof fan into a intake just see if it cuts cpu temps, as its fighting your cpu cooler for air.

shouldnt be too bad if theres front or side intake :)

I'm using the same case to house my old components that i silenced and now use for media and testing at work.

If I had more time I'd do a proper shoot with lighting and stuff like I did for the photos in the link in my sig. Will be doing more photos like that of my proper rig once I've finished my next set of mods - new one piece mesh front, a mesh midplate and new window panel :D

Scythe Kaze Jyuni 1900 on the front, and some random cheap 12cm on the side... The idea was to take warm air away from the RAM to stop it going through the cooler... Not sure if it works like that, but I cba swapping it around right now to see... Maybe at weekend ;)

Why the OTT PSU?

OTT? Don't be silly :p You can never have too much power :weeee

The system's in constant use, I need something that I can rely on (and all that jazz) :p

Besides, by the time I've got 3 GPUs in there I'll need a hefty power supply. I melted an 800W and a GPU a while back (overclocking 2 7900GS in SLI) :picard:

my cable management is throw it in and close the lid

it was the same here but at some point i thought: "hold on! why am I spending quite a bit on towers and not using them properly in terms of cable management. they actually cost a bit more because someone sat down and thought about how to avoid the mess"

besides that i am a german hence I like it neat and tidy. that makes my sleep better :weeee

what would be ideal is if you could get a case with an inch thick false bottom and cable side mounted on psu maybe a false hd hollow box or maybe front panel wiring built into a case !! oh dear think i may have just talked myself into a scratch build !!

Or just make the cables look pretty?

The cables are very purty indeed. Loving how the componant ends are heatshrink free.

There's heatshrink at the other end too :P .. if that's what you meant?
