Hi, has anyone else put dd-wrt on their virgin router? (the dlink 615) ?

I have, everything working brilliantly, and loads of features..

But my devices with N connections only seem to be connecting at 54mbps, and even tho i set NG mixed, the router only doing G.

Which is a little bit of a pain, looked about on the net, seems people mention it, but then no answers.

Any ideas people?

My guess is that NG mode forces N devices into their G compatibility mode.

Have you tried tomato?

I tried Tomato, and it didn't work :-( ...I reverted back to DD-WRT on my Dlink 615.
I think it is excellent, although perhaps more stuff than I actually need!

I have exactly the same problem as you - I bought a wireless-N USB dongle for a machine and it has never connected any faster than 54Mbps! I've done N only, NG mixed, changes the channel, the range. I've mucked about for hours!

Whats worse is the wife has a digital internet player in the kitchen which used to hook upto the wifi and stream web radio as well as BBC and a few TV channels. I have yet to get this device to work with the Dlink now that it has DD-WRT. No problems with the NetGear which the Dlink has replaced.

@ alexnifty - I'm afraid I don't have this luxury (turning everything to N) as I have several G devices (smartphones, radio, old laptop, etc)

Be interesting to see if there are any DD-WRT experts come out of the woodwork

leave it set to default "mixed" and it should connect via N. mine wouldn't
when i used N and G only

mines not having it either way, and weirdly, if i set it to n only, not even the n devices can connect?.. I've got the same problem tho, cant have n only because of ps3, ipod etc, every computer that is not hard wired is N tho.

With the stock dlink firmware it did n speeds fine, just cant work this one out

Did u set channel width within 'Basic Settings' to 40mhz?

I don't think it has an auto switch between the two though to allow 20mhz devices. I only played with it for a while, can't remember that well.

edit
sry, misread. U can't connect n devices at all. :S

Which h/w model is your dir 615? d2?

Just set it to normal mix too, and n devices only seeing router a g, and not n, can verify it sees n routers tho, as next door have a n router and it says that as n.

aha, looked at the wiki, seems you have to have encrytion as AES and not TKIP and it works (kind of) getting 150mbps now.. so getting there :)

Shame I didn't notice this thread until now or I would have had the answer straight away (changing it to AES).

If you want full 300Mbps speed then you'll have to change the channel width to the full 40MHz.

it is full width, but still only 150mbps, but still better than 54 eh, i love dd-wrt, i need another compatible router now to do some wireless extending to my garage!. Anyone got one? another 615 perhaps they want to sell?

You sure your wireless on your PC supports 300?

I have a 615 kicking around somewhere but I doesn't have a power supply.

I have one, and 2 of the dongles, all boxed up band new, havent put DD-WRT on it yet.

I have an old for sale thread in the archived/completed section for the trading post that has all the relevant pictures etc.

As for this problem ,looks like you've found the info i had, but i did have one other thought, and that is.... Is the router capable of operating in G and N modes simltaneously ?... ie if you have some items that are G only, wont it thottle everything back to 54mbps ?? ... or is it true dual-band ?

Seems the The n devices still work at 150mbps if (ok this is weird..).

If you setup a virtual ssid, so the router broadcasts 2 or more wireless networks.. Put one for your N devices, and the other for your g devices, Have same settings for both, only connect the n to one, and g to other.

Seems weird, but they dont drop from N if you keep them seperate.

They do drop if you put them on the same ssid.

Weird eh, but hey it works.

Trying to find your old for sale thread mate.

Ok, they do drop slightly when you connect a G device it seems, then it goes back up about 5 mins later?.

superb! ...i'll give these a try when I get home tonight. Think I tried increasing to 40mhz but didn't think about AES over TKIP.

Thanks!

This, although would be 130mbps as it's the 40mhz that doubles wireless N and b/g is 20mhz. It's a cheapy router and not dual band. To get 270mbps u would need to have AES, 40mhz and N only from what I remember.

ok, replied to your post, and will consider the offer (left over adapters are more use to me than the router, so i am tempted by your offer)
