Need a little help guys if possible, the wife brother has brought his laptop around to see it I can fix, it just keeps looping in vista, it gets to the start screen and says installing update 0 of 3 and then re boots, does the same when trying safe mode, tried loading with comman prompt to run chkdsk and does the same, so I am a little stuck other than doing a factory reset which if I am honest I can't really be bothered to do lol.

if you can get into safe mode you can get into the recovery console and use system restore to roll back to before the update

see what options you get from the tapping F8 on boot or if that brings no joy ctrl+f11 takes you into Dell Recovery Restore Utility this should give you the options to roll back

Tap F8 at start up and try Last known good configuration.

You might want to go into the update manager and turn off auto up dates... or you can try installing the updates one at a time until you find the culprit then mark it as never install..

It's a strange one mate, I let it install everything and it has and running fine, all very Bill gates as usual.

my GF's Dell inspiron came with vista and it was always hanging
dropping wifi. GF was moaning all the time about it so i lashed windows 7 on it, it has been perfect since

not dropping connection at all no hanging and more importantly no moaning

Glad you got it sorted.

Vista is a pig - should try and get him to get 7 on it as it would probably make your life easier in the long run (and also give him a potentially faster machine)

My Philips Vista laptop did this a few days ago.

Installed updates, booted a day later and it just completely Hung for ages! Used system restore to an earlier point and it was fine :)

Back up all data first and then install new Win7 fresh one
