Hard drive query

I've got a Samsung 40Gb IDE hard drive set up in a cassette and used as a back up drive on USB. The problem I have is that when booting up the drive isn't found, no error messages it just isn't there in 'my computer' but if I pull out the USB connector and plug it back in up pops the drive. Any suggestions how to make it work from boot up? E.

just got a freinds floppy drive
and es tool seem sto work
test both drives
and do memtest
