Bought a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH not so long ago. Has very good reviews on the web, plus great features including stock DD-WRT based firmware, gigabit LAN etc.

From my experience, thing is a piece of junk. Often drops internet connection but even more common is that it will drop off wifi, repeated rescans don't show the router but other PC's in the flat can connect just fine (until the same problem happens to them a few hours later).

My crappy little D-link I got with Virgin Media is actually better. So much for the reviews. I'm starting to wonder if I got a defective unit

Time for more router shopping I guess...

Have you checked for a firmware update? Even re-flashing the existing firmware can, sometimes sort the problem.

Yup.

The router has two firmware options; the basic buffalo firmware and a slightly customized version of DD-WRT for the router. Tried both of those, both up to date, both multiple times. No luck.

I must say I've only ever owned one Buffalo router, and I sent that back & exchanged it for a Linksys after 3 days; it was cr*p.

I'll give you £25 for it. :)

I bought a buffalo a few years ago, it was £15 from a competitor and it was actually quite reliable, for the price I wasn't expecting anything great but it seemed to maintain a connection so I was happy with it.

Haha! I don't know what I'm gonna do with it yet, whether to sell it or use it as a gigabit switch or something.

Get a Netgear WNDR3700 or wait a little and get the 3800 or 4000

I would never waste my money on a Gaming router again.

I wouldn't necessarily consider this a gaming router, more a top end unit... also these would be generation 2 on that design, and hopefu;;y any early bugs might have been worked on.... simple name changes are not goign to cut it any more ;)

So hopefully there would be progress and a step forward somewhere in the design to give increased performance.

I have a WNDR3700, and can assure you they are not cheap Routers !

Wasn't saying your ones where gaming routers me old mate. :)

I've bought a gaming router and wouldn't waste my money on one again. :D

oh right, i thought you looked at the links and your mind was immediately saying "gaming router" ..... lol, my mistake.

That said, in theory, the ones touted as HD media streaming biased ones should perform well

Update: been reading up on the wireless drop off problem with the router; seems to be a common problem and there is a fix.

Apparently the wifi drops off if two pings are lost, there is a "script" that can be pasted into the webui which supposedly fixes this.

I've tried it and it seems to be working alright for now. Let's hope it's a permanent solution.

sounds like a geek derived solution for a pee-poor oem implementation of code, like i said ... VM should stick to service providing and leave the end user hardware to those that know what they are doing :D
