Not sure which forum this should go in.......... sorry!

Ok, my Toshy 32" lcd hdtv has pc input.
My pc has a 7900GS with dual dvi.

When i hook the pc up to the lcd (with a standard vga cable and adaptor for the pc end) i can't seem to get the correct resolution without the desktop either disappearing off each edge of the screen in widescreen mode or it looking crappy in box mode.
Now, i assume it clips it because LCD's are 16:9 and pc/monitors use 16:10. Is this right?
There is nothing on my tv that allows me to adjust anything.
When i use 1366x720 (I think its that, or very similar), its nice and sharp but falls off each edge, so i cannot see the task bar at the bottom etc.
Anything below that and it looks pants. 1280x1024 is what i'm having to use to see all of the desktop but its jaggy cos its below its native res and its obviously 4:3 not widescreen.
The tv doesn't seem to accept any res below that.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

can you list the full model number please as will help in narrowing down the correct details for you.

Toshiba 32WLT66 (Regza, or whatever its called)

The 7900gs will do all resolutions up to about 2560 x 1600.

TV certainly won't :p

The tv has 2 x HDMI. Is it worth getting a dvi - hdmi cable?

Probably not, i had similar issues on my samsung and the only way i could "fix" it was to use the VGA input. I tried both 720p and 1080i resolutions but picture quality wasn't as good as i had hoped, fine for watching tv etc but not great for normal use as like you say you lose the top and bottom of the display, this was via a hdmi / dvi cable. IIRC there is a way of forcing a resolution to make it "fit" but even that wasn't as good a picture as i'd hoped so in the end i used the vga input on my tv, which works perfectly and even though it is a slightly lower res the picture is pin sharp.

Likewise.. I found the VGA input worked best for using my laptop on my tv..

Same result here, also on a Samsung. I got a cheep VGA cable to try it and it works a treat, looks like your tv has a "PC Input" so maybe thats the best option

PC input is the VGA input, same thing.
I'm guessing unless your tv or vid card does pixel mapping (?) then you're gonna get that image bleed off due to the 19:9 v 16:10 thing ?
Bummer!

How long until either TV or video card+game makers catch on and make things inter-compatible.

It surely wouldn't be that hard to make tv's or monitors the same size as the other.

I don't mean able to work with the same signals... I mean in terms of size.

Yes you can send your picture from one to the other, but the resolutions are just different enough to be irritating.

I don't have an LCD TV.

Is it a resolution issue or a scaling issue?

k.jacko

Probably both, but more scaling i assume
LCD = 16:9
TFT = 16:10

Why???

Have you tried to let the graphics card do the scaling?

Have you tried to let the graphics card do the scaling?

How do i do that?
I just plug the 32" into the dvi slot (using a dvi-vga adaptor) of my 4870, and it prats around for ages trying to find a decent resolution, eventually settling on 800x600 (??)
I can't really see anything in the AMD control centre that will either pixel map or auto adjust to make it look right.

what is the native resolution of the TV?

I think its native res is 1366 x 768 tbh.
