Would you ever use that 2GB? unless you ran games on a 4foot screen

Essentially, I think it doesn't matter with current games... but it might extend the life of the card by a few games. The real question is how well the memory matches the processing power. There's no point having 32gb of memory, if the GPU can't process the pixels fast enough.

I personally think 1GB is enough for current cards - as shown, there's very little difference between 512MB and 1GB cards atm. At most, I think 1GB will be needed before we need more powerful processors on the cards.

its to do with the mem bandwidth, if they doubled that too it would make a difference.

Now that, I don't really see the point of. What I am looking forward to seeing is a 1GB GDDR5 version of the Radeon HD 4870.

thats it, faster speed thru the narrow bandwidth beats more total space.

Why buy a massive fridge if you live alone? :)

You're right, it's to "trick" lesser technical people into buying them.

What about the problem of ram being addressed to the card, unless youve got 4GB your going to struggle, even then your losing half your ram.

thats only a problem if your on 32bit os.

the 4870 is saved by gddr5 to get the most speed thru its 256 bus, imagine what it would be like if the stuck a gig or 2 on the 280 with its 512 bus

1gb of gddr5 on 280 would be insane and a waste as theres not enough data for the bandwidth.

so it wont be idle on the 4870?
