Found out today what happens when you put petrol in a diesel car

It doesn't go very far.:censored:

Used AA Fuel Assist service which appears to have been very good. They will deal with the situation by the roadside or come to your house, if you manage to get there! Car seems to be ok at the moment although not looking forward to filling up again.

I wont be doing that in a hurry again - £60 petrol + the fix

In case anyone else has this moment of madness you may find this link useful: http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/news/aa-fuel-assist.html

Can't imagine why they didn't buy into that guy on dragons den, who had an attachment that meant only one type would fit into each vehicle, you only had to fit it to the cars and it meant you just could not put the wrong one in. They said it was crap.

I feel for you, not done it yet but then I don't own two cars,

I used to put petrol in my old diesel all the time... 50 litres of veg and 1 litre of unleaded :D

Wont try that on the civic though being common rail, the old one was a bosch pumped 306 td.

Petrol in a diesel car isn't the end of the world tho is it..? it needs new filters and stuff but It's not terminal as far as I know.. diesel in a petrol engine is way worse I think..

I'm waiting for WL's comments in this thread...;)

Edit: beaten to it!

Diesel is a lubricant, petrol is a solvant.

This means that petrol can cause wear in things like the injector pump and injectors, and perish seals etc.

So far though it looks fine though.

This happened to me when I started a new job as a shop manager. The area manager had given me a van to use to get to and from work. As a kind gesture, he popped in £10 worth of petrol. He then jumped in his BMW and went off. I drove off and got about four miles before it conked out. This being on the main A23 between Burgess Hill and Brighton. I had to walk about 4 miles in the pitch dark to find a phone box to get a taxi home. This was in the days before everyone had a mobile phones, including me and Petrol was 67p a litre! I was less than pleased with him the next day. They had to collect the van which had some expensive built in appliances in the back and get it flushed out.

Gold star for WL!
Yes, A diesel is known as "Heavy Oil" as it lubricates the system.

You couldnt make that mistake becuase, As DT says, you cant get a diesel nossle in a Petrol hole. They made it that way as it would seriously ruin a petrol engine. Burn the thing inside out.

My dad put £90 worth a petrol in the van a few months agao. I think that was £190 to pump out plus the £90 for the fuel:cop:

I've never noticed that. Maybe I'll have a closer look when I next fill up. Then when people stare at me wondering what I'm doing, I'll do a Mr Bean-style cover up.

Having never noticed that, I still have never made that mistake. :)

Ouch. Have almost done it. Have always driven petrol MOndeos either 2litre or 2.5litre. Started a new job as store manager in bristol and travelling from the welsh valleys everyday the 2.5 was costing me £55 every two days back when unleaded was only 95.9p per litre. Had to get a diesel instead and regularly pulled up and grabbed the petrol pump. Luckily I kept the "This car runs on Diesel" sticker on the fuel flap.

On most new fords the diesel pumps won't fit....the unleaded are thinner and there is a sort of valve type Thingy ( so I've been told) that the thin nozzle pushes in..if you try to use diesel you end up with diesel smelling shoes!
