View Full Version : Memory errors (but only at different speeds)
My OCZ 2GB PC2-8500 Intel Optimized Titanium Edition should run at 1066mhz on my new Asus P5Q Deluxe and Intel Core2Duo E8400 no problems. As part of my graphics card related problems I thought it a good idea to check the memory via the BIOS so I ran the memorycheck.org prog.
@ 1066 I get hundreds of errors!
So I checked all other speeds as reported by the board: 667, 800 and 835 all ran through with no errors, but 887, 1002 and 1066 had increasing errors.
Does this mean the memory is knackered?
Could the motherboard need an update (I am running the latest version)
Have you set the memory voltages? Probably needs 2.1 or 2.2 volts, not auto.
Tried 2.0 - 2.2 in increments of 0.02. Still getting errors when set to 1066
What timings do you set when you do 1066 memory? because tight timings wont work at 1066mhz.
@Lynx Timings are 5-5-5-15. These are always auto set, they are as specified on the chips.
So I decided to test each piece of RAM seperatly. I set the voltage to 2.1 again as specified on the chips and at 1066mhz.
No errors on either!:exclaim
Changed slots and tested each piece again = ERRORS on both!!:O
RAM was noticibly warmer as well!:exclaim
So its the motherboard, case closed:question:
Unless I'm missing something?
Are they put into dual channel? As in slot 1 and 3 not slot 1 and 2?
Slots are colour coded 1 and 3 are yellow 2 and 4 are black!
Normal dual channel setup has them in yellow slots!
For testing I tested slot 1 then 3.
They were then reported by bios to run at 1066 in single channel
3 gave me errors and made the RAM much warmer!
Have you added voltage to northbridge? Because that needs more power for higher frequencies.
No I havent. What should I be setting it to?
What settings do you have?
Auto! Guess i will just have to start low and slowly work my way up!
After testing the RAM yesterday I left in the one stick and retired for the night.
Today I put back in the other stick and booted up. It auto detected the RAM incorecctly at 667mhz and told me my overclocking had failed! I tried to get into BIOS but USB keyboard was not being detected even after several restarts! Throughout the restarts it autodetected the RAM correctly so eventually I just let it boot up. Of course it was all set up for memory testing so that started and I let it run. IT PASSED!!!!:O:exclaim
Restarted and it let me into BIOS and all was good 1066 with 2.1v
So I changed the northbridge voltage to 1.3 = memory errors. 1.5 it passed but windows would not boot. So left it at auto, booted into Windows and here I am!
SO I ran CPUZ. Memory tab:
Type: DDR3! DRAM Frequencey: 534.4mhz
SPD Tab:
Max bandwidth: PC2-5300 (333mhz) Slots 1 and 3 DDR2
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!
PS. thanks Lynx for your responses.
534x2= 1068 so thats the correct speed. Ignore the SPD its running at correct speeds.
all ram (ddr2) is seen as 667, some have eep or an extra spd to tell its true max speeds but for 9 out of 10 they will auto to 667. this is beacuase they will run great at that speed on 1.8v but also the chipset may need extra juice to be stable above that.
what did windoz do on 1.5v to the nb?
Why does it report it as PC-2 5300 when it should be 8500?
EDIT for marsey99: Windows got to loading screen, then just froze!
This is really confusing, umm, ive run out of ideas, run full nb voltage?
Why does it report it as PC-2 5300 when it should be 8500?
EDIT for marsey99: Windows got to loading screen, then just froze!
We're 100% certain your using 8500?
Quickcode: 29108
Definetly DDR2 8500. Im pretty sure its the motherboard, it either has a faulty RAM slot or in need of a better BIOS! I will soon test ALL the RAM slots in single and Dual channel to try and find out!
Was recently running at 1066mhz but did some video file encoding and it went to pot. Put it back to 800mhz and no problems!!
