Hello all, my cosmos and mobo arrived today, and **** me its BIG! I could fit my other PC inside it, literally.

But anyway. First things first, i cant get the I/O panel in the back... do i just force it in or what?

And what do you recommend i do when installing the mobo?

Monkey
07-07-08, 11:51
Ok i got the I/O panel in, just needed a little force.

remember to use standoffs... :D

Put the RAM and CPU in and the heatsink on before putting into case.

Put the RAM and CPU in and the heatsink on before putting into case.
Why's that?

jonwoad
07-07-08, 12:13
1) it's a lot easier
2) easier to check that it's all in properly
3) reduces the risk of the board snapping when putting pressure on it.

+1 on that

Ahh... slight technical hitch... im ordering them today, and ive already installed the mobo... Trust me i wont break it

Put the RAM and CPU in and the heatsink on before putting into case.
Definitely another vote for that.. :)

edit: Just read your post saying you've already put the mobo in...

Monkey
07-07-08, 12:21
So what do i order next in you two opinion?

CPU, RAM, and Heatsink?

jonwoad
07-07-08, 12:22
Just remember if you do you wont have a warranty... trust me it is soooo much easier just to unscrew it, take it out, put all the bits in, then put it back. I've managed to break a number of motherboard by putting the heatsink on so it does happen.

mac124
07-07-08, 14:54
Just hope the cooler doesn't require the mobo to be removed to be fitted, as 99% of after market intel coolers seem to ;)

Mul.
07-07-08, 15:45
I agree, remove the motherboard. At first you might think you're saving time but after flexing your board repeated times, proceeding to build the rest of the system and find that your idle temps are 60c+ because you weren't able to visually inspect that all four pushpins are secured under the motherboard (it may click but it doesn't mean the plastic notch has gone through the holes and secured under the board), where you'll then have to wrestle inside your case once again wishing you just removed the board to start off with! :)

The LGA775 mounting mechanism is just stupid. Particularly with this one I recommend mounting the CPU and Heatsink outside the case.

wonderlust
07-07-08, 15:56
been there seen that done that.

I now ALWAYS remove the board.

PeterStoba
07-07-08, 16:14
Me too now after my first time, so hard

marsey99
07-07-08, 16:29
seeing as you have the mobo in use this time to plan and mark out where you will route your cables, then take it out to fit the cpu, ram and blower :)

Monkey
07-07-08, 16:32
Right, seeing as you all suggest so, tommorrow when my next order arrives i will take it out and put on the CPU, Heatsink and RAM.

Does anyone know if the Q6600 comes with thermal paste?

After my next order all i need to run it is the GPU!!!

jonwoad
07-07-08, 16:33
If you ordered the retail version it will have some preapplied to the Heatsink

marsey99
07-07-08, 16:59
you want it out the case even more so if your using the stock blower as you want to check the underside of the board to make sure the push pins go all the way thru the board.

QuickShotProductions
07-07-08, 17:12
Thermal paste was on it already when I got q6600. I realised that when I had to take it off 100 times, because I couldnt put it in properly, since I had put the motherboard in the computer case before putting everything on it :p. DAMN, never again

Monkey

Im gonna be using the Arctic Cooler 7 PRO, and the retail Q6600 so is there anything special i will have to do or not?

Also to everyone who knows... will i have to do any flashing to the BIOS on my board atall? Its a Asus P5E X38 Chipset (Skt 775) 1600FSB DDR2 PCI-E Crossfire (https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+775+%28Intel%29/Asus+P5E+X38+Chipset+%28Skt+775%29+1600FSB+DDR2+PC I-E+Crossfire?productId=28816)

07-07-08, 17:35
I would doubt it the q6600 is getting old now in processor terms. The AC Freezer 7 comes with it's own T.I.M. which is as good as AS5 or even slightly better

Mul.
07-07-08, 17:45
No flashing at all. X38's should support G0 rev chips like the Q6600 straight out of the box :)

from what i have read there is no real benefit of the X38 over the P35, and the same goes for the x48, the P45 hads the advantage of a new Southbridge but I don't know if there is even any benefit there

The P35 is getting a little old, but is still a great performer and good boards can be had for a reasonable price. The disadvantage is the xfire is 16/4. The PCIE is not V2.x but this has yet to be proved as a necessity.

The PCIE on mine is V2.x and has two 16x PCIE slots or is that not what you mean?

07-07-08, 19:33
If he ever has any intention of crossfire, I'd say X38/X48 in an instant. £110 makes them at most, £20 more than a quality P45 board, offers more than enough overclockability, 16x/16x PCI-E 2.0 lane crossfire. If money allows I don't see why not.

wonderlust
07-07-08, 19:37
I can't argue on the x16+x16 having said that v2x8+v2x8 is supposed to have the same bandwidth as x16+x16. although v2x16+v2x16 is the best available there is not supposed to be a card that will use all v1 pcie bandwidth yet (similar situation to sata 300)

Ahh ok... fair enough.

Well when i receive the CPU, Heatsink, RAM, PSU and HDD tommorow i will post some picturesand you can tell me what wires are for what cos i havnt had a new pc in years and the last one i built had IDE cables and only one case fan so im a little stumped.

Cant wait to start gettin the next installation.
Ill keep you up to date, and ask for advice too :P

EDIT: Still have to get an OS

wonderlust

get an ubuntu iso,

free and quick and fairly windows like,

marsey99
07-07-08, 21:14
i think you have picked a peach of a board, the only thought i would have with it is; what will the p45, with the same onboards, perform like? its intels swansong for this kind of tech before it follows amd in its design and as such it seems like the pinicle giving unmatched control with the amount of options in the bios.

get some tim cleaner (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Fans%2C+Heatsinks%2C+Coolers/Accessories/Akasa+TIM+Clean+-+thermal+interface+cleaner+?productId=9954) to give the cpu a good clean before you fit it as they do come tainted when new, give a bit of a scrub with some wet then gradually dry cotton wool balls and you will see the dirt on the wool. it will give you the best contact with the f7pro, it should have mx-2 on it which is as good as it gets in terms of paste although i do think they use more than you really need.

i was being serious before about the cable management, the perfect time to do it is when you only have the bare min in the case.

Monkey
07-07-08, 21:23
What about some lime whipes? They clean almost anything... or will it just not do?

And yeah, as soon as i get my next parts tommorrow i will take out the mobo, sort out the cables to the best of my knowledge, (anything im not sure of ill do afterwards) and then install everything ive bought so far

Sorry i got a call and i pressed save so it didnt log me out again

Floppy, no need for one, assuming u have a usb key

Ubuntu will run windows apps to a fashion, but it comes with an open source office replacement and ubuntu is excellent for the money (ie it's free)

Just dont shuffle your feet, wear manmade fabric and touch a radiator before you do anything, or just plug the psu in, then it will ground the system nicely when u do stuff.

Monkey
08-07-08, 09:01
Right im gonna leave it until my delivery arrives, then nip into town to get a wrist strap.

Any tips... apart from dont do what i did...

Monkey

Ok so its arrived, i was gonna install the PSU and HDD first, then what should i do after? CPu, heatsink then RAM?

Monkey
08-07-08, 12:57
Help anyone? What should i place the mobo onto when stickin on the parts?

alexnifty
08-07-08, 12:59
You don't need to shell out for a wriststrap, just do what I do sometimes; get a length of any old wire, tie one end around your wrist, and the other end to the radiatior.
Obviously strip off enough plastic sheath to make the metal touch your skin and the radiator.

As said before, you'll find it easier to fit the cpu and heatsink outside of the case. I also fit the RAM at this stage. Make sure to keep the mobo on its anti-static bag, this should help protect it from being put down on anything with static.

I'll forget something stupid in this list, I know it:

When it comes to what things to put in which order, everyone is different. But for me I put the PSU in first, then; optical drives, hard drives, mobo, connect front panel wires to mobo pins, soundcard (I connect front panel audio wires before putting it in), gpu.

Then after that its a big fight about where I'm going to route all the wires! Usually devolves into unplugging most things I just plugged in and then redoing it.

Monkey
08-07-08, 13:03
Which way should i face the arctic cooler? the fan facing forwards or backwards?

alexnifty
08-07-08, 13:12
The fan should blow from front to back. So the fan should be before the heatsink looking from the front.

Aaron
08-07-08, 13:14
I've got mine facing so its blowing towards the back of the case. That way, the rear exhaust fan (if you have one) will draw the hot air out the back of the case..

alexnifty
08-07-08, 13:19
Yeap thats how most people do it.

The alternative is blowing upwards if you have a top extractor fan and the PSU is at the bottom of the case, but even in that instance I think front to back is still best.

Monkey
08-07-08, 14:37
Yo people, Ive got everything plugged in. The CPU Heatsink would only fit in one direction...

http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm449/DDevilMonkey_666/Cosmos/DSC00013.jpg

Also i wondered how to plug in the main board power cable, i don't know if the PSU cable plugs straight into the board or do i need to plug the one that comes from the from of the case into the board and then the PSU cable into that one...
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm449/DDevilMonkey_666/DSC00019.jpgAnd do i need the P cables or are they for the GPU?

alexnifty
08-07-08, 15:22
You really don't want the cpu cooler to be that way round. Whats stopping it facing the other way?

Not sure about that cable you have for the mobo, I shouldn't think you need it but it might be best to refer to your manual.

The fins on the main board around the CPU don't allow it to go any other way around. I know i don't want it that way round but its the only way it will fit

PeterStoba
08-07-08, 15:44
Thats an inbuilt 20-24pin adaptor i think

You want to fill the slot with it, so use the 24

08-07-08, 17:36
If the cpu cooler wont fit the "proper" way round, or at least blowing the hot air upwards get another cooler as that way round it will be fighting against the rear case fan and be noisey as hell or worst case it will be starved of air and wont cool the cpu properly.

Google around to see if other people have done with that combo of cooler and mobo.

Monkey

I understand that... but luckily i noticed something, the plastic fan on the heatsink is adjustable in height, therefore moving it up one bracket enables it to fit properly... very barely i must say.

Monkey
08-07-08, 19:30
Nope i didn't bend anything, everything just fit in, only trouble i had was having to move the fan up the heatsink a little, it just clips off then clips back on.

There are a few wider slots on the heatsink to accommodate for the plastic bit on the bottom of the fan so all is good

run all the cables out and under the mobo tray thru the closest hole, so all the psu cables could be hid more, maybe do the same for your sata if they are llong enough.

cable tie the wires so the are lay flat with the case where they run along it so it stands out less and try to keep any excess cable out of sight.

black insulation tape is good to hide any multi coloured wires, or at least keep them all uniform.

hey im a mentor cool :D

If i were to order the two screens would i need to order two 24" pixel checks?

And is it worth ordering the pixel checks?

I would have thought you'd have to pay for two. Its rare for screens to have dead pixels thesedays, although if you get one in the middle its DAM annoying.

Ok ive just looked inside my cosmos to find that on the mobo there is the 4 pin plug next to the cpu, and another 4 pin plug on the side of it, making it 8 pins, but 4 of them have a cap on them.

And on my PSU i have the two leads, one of which has 4 pins, and the other has 8.

Do i plug in the 8 pin or the 4 pin? And what will the difference be?

jonwoad

If so run cpu-z check out the spd timings and voltage and set in the bios accordingly.

if all that fails try a cmos reset

looks like it, out of interest try each stick separately, if you find that one stick is borked, you can try installing vista again to see if that is what is stopping it being installed.

If it installs, RMA the memory, and send it back as a complete set.

If it doesnt, there may be another problem

Might not be, maybe try it at 2.2v?

Also there maybe another setting in bios to give it a "half" tweek ie 0.1v or a percentage.

Monkey

when i turn it on it says
detecting drives done, no any drives found
and ram 2048 ok

And on the site it states the ram runs at 2.01

Try resetting your BIOS to defaults and see if it still comes up with errors on memtest

jonwoad

Ahh i seee... i will stick the extra stick in later and see if i need to update.

Although i think it may have been that i set the voltage to 2.01 instead of 2.1

Easily done... just too eager to get it done

Ill let you know how it goes

But that doesnt explain why it failed memtest. Thats nothing to do with vista.

Ok so im all up and running, the only difficulty i have is that i cant get the second stick of RAM to work

Where can i downlaod this update and should i update ati drivers from windows update or should i juct continue to open up the catalyst control center and upload from the official site?

And i need some software to check stability of all the components, any ideas for that would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the help so far people

And yes.... its ten minutes to 3 :P

ahhh, ha

Cheers wonderlust, so what should i be looking for and how long do you recommend i run it for?

wonderlust
09-10-08, 09:03
12 hours should be plenty.

It will give you an option that will give the most heat too, so can test the efficincy of your heatsink

Monkey
09-10-08, 09:06
i seee...

Any software you would recommend for testing other hardware?

Slowly gettin used to vista by the way, first one ive owned

Oh yeah i need drivers for an SMB Bus Controller

Think it may be the sockets on the top of my case

wonderlust

I use HWmonitor from the CPU-Z site to keep an eye on most system temps.

GPU-Z for graphics card temps etc.

you could use something like 3dmark 2006 on a loop to stress the graphics card.

Monkey
09-10-08, 09:56
Tried installing that update by the way, and it says it doesnt apply to my system

Surely the RAM is faulty then?

Monkey

Anyway..... I uninstalled ati drivers and CCC, and now i cant install the latest updates?

How do i get round that one?

alexnifty
09-10-08, 11:17
I use Orthos (http://sp2004.fre3.com/)which is a nicer GUI verson of prime95.
Gives you more clarity on how long the test has been running and its easy to see when you get an error (big red flashy lights of fail!).

I like to use Rivatuner to monitor my GPU temps, but I only use that when I am stressing it with the ATI Tool artifact test and increasing my GPU overclock with Rivatuner (which I LOVE).

Monkey
09-10-08, 11:25
Any idea how i can get my gpu updated?

Wont let me install the updates now

alexnifty
09-10-08, 11:29
Define "wont let me".

Monkey
09-10-08, 11:33
Ok... i download the update from the website for vista 64bit, start to install it and it fails

alexnifty
09-10-08, 11:48
Have you rightclicked it and selected 'run as administrator'?

(welcome to vista hell...)

Monkey
09-10-08, 13:44
Well no, cos i had already installed from the website and it worked,
restarted and it said that the hardware driver does not match the CCC version. Please change display adapter or update drivers.

Tried again, still the same thing

Uninstalled everything

Tried reinstalling, error
