I know my parents have the bottom level of cover. I think its £50 pa, and they will either fix your car at the roadside or tow you to a local garage for free. But parts aren't included. The number of times the AA have rescued us from flat batteries because my mum had to wait for me outside school is unreal (especially as I normally get the bus)! But AA normally respond within 20 minites, but more often than not within 10.

Check out the Money Saving Expert they have a big article on breakdown cover.

I normally alternate between the AA and the RAC and pick their cheapest option (about £28-£30) and then use Quidco to get the year for about a tenner.

I have my car insurance with Aviva and Aviva also own the RAC, so I have RAC cover through Aviva cheaper than if you got it with the RAC! (Strange, but true). So that is always another option.
