hi guys,

this is my first post, i am a software engineer and was looking to upgrade my PC saying i have just graduated from Uni, a present to myself for finishing. gona build it up over a period of a few weeks till a month or so, so ordering a few things now and again.

Since my degree was bout software i am not overly competend on the hardware aspects so i was hoping you guys could help me out a bit.

First of, i have order the two products below, do you think that they will go well together?

Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2L iG33 Express Socket 775 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 95W G0 Stepping (Retail 775)

Second of, can i overclock my CPU and if so will this m/b be ok for that?

Third, what kind of PSU would you guys recommend for power?

does the CPU come with built in fan for cooling or do i need to purchase addition hardware?

Was thinking on 4GB of Kingston RAM, 500/750GB Hard Drive. not sure on the rest at the mo.

and if anybody can supply me with any additional info i would be greatful

Thanks Guys

RR

Hello and welcome to the forums.

I am not sure about the board you have chosen, But Anandtech did a review on three G33 boards, 1 Gigabyte, 1 Asus, 1 MSI http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3111

all of these boards overclocked very well.

The Asus is a couple of quid dearer than the board you have picked (I have one and it overclocks very well, I tested my q6600 @ 3.6Ghz) where the Gigabyte board they reviewed has a better southbridge, but is reported to run a little on the hot side (I found this when I researched the board) and is a fair chunk more expensive.

thanks for that bud, im not too much bother by over clocking, as my old pc is P4 1.5 so anything greater than that and im happy

thanks again

Well i must admit that the current super special price of the Q6600 makes it a steal.

You will not be disappointed, what are you planning on using the system for? Is the onboard graphics of the G33 boards going to be enough for your uses?

Yeah i got it on the special, thought it was well worth the money, the Duo Core 3.0GHZ was same price so i thought Quad Core would be superior.

Prob main uses for system would be web browsing, downaloding, some development worlk(application and web), XVID/AVI converting to DVD/MP4 etc, on-borad graphics would be suitable to be honest, but will see when it arrives.

what PSU would you recommend? what bout cooling?

anything else i should know?

I use nero do convert Divx/xvid's to DVD and it takes about 20 minutes at 3Ghz :D

I have a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme on mine (imho it's overkill), but from the reviews i have read the Artic cooling Freezer 7 Pro is good enough to cool the Q6600 to 3.6Ghz for a cooler that cheap thats pretty good.

PSU, get a good quality 500/600w one, if you search the forums there are plenty of good psu threads.
