New motherboard then i guess? In a year or so anyway...

Yeah, definately, bigger socket

Is it really 1366 pins? Thats like double the ammount now...

Well thats intel for you...

wonderlust

the increase in pin count is due to the new chip having an IMC (intergrated Memory Contoller) like the AMD chips, Should (but probably won't ) lead to cheaper motherboards.

But may also cause memory incompatibilites like amd had in the early days ot the Athlon64 series

Ahh i see...
Does anyone know of any new plans from AMD cpu wise???

AM2 to be phased out by am2+ followed by am3

Monkey

Cool... any specs. Will they be competing with intel again?

AM3 will have DDR3 support.

i cant see amd catching intel till they phase out the phenom derived core.

2009 ish

I see that AMD launched a new chip today, the 9950 Black Edition, it runs at a default speed of 2.6Ghz, hmm the same as a q6600 :D but is rated at a huge 140W TDP! According to this review http://www.hothardware.com/articles/AMD_Phenom_X4_9350e_and_9950_BE_Debut/

It appears to be pretty much on a par with the Q6600, and they even managed to overclock it to over 3Ghz!

Maybe, just Maybe AMD is finally on the way to being able to compete with Intels one generation old architecture!

Err q6600 is 2400mhz mate, but yes 140w is a bit much. From my experience in the benchies i did there isn't a massive difference in perfomance from a stock q6600 and 9750 i was pleasantly suprised tbh.

oops  (thats what i get for never running mine at stock...)

AMD will almost certainly catch, and probably overtake, intel again... as with other areas in computing where there are 2 main players, there tends to be a lot of leapfrogging. Athlon 64 beat the pants off Pentium 4, Pentium 3 was arguably better than athlon (but they were pretty much on par)

It's similar to the story of ATI vs nVidia, there tends to be some leapfrogging, although nVidia usually seems to nudge ahead.

Good news.

yea, they are now slowly catching but this is about when intel can just slash prices on a socket they are about to leave.

nehalem is what amd need to be leapfrogging, the good news for them is that there is only another slight improvement from the current chips to them so it wont be too hard.

i would like to see some healthy competition off these 2, it was good when each one released a chip that was better then the other

and this is good news, i'm looking forward to the 8core cpu's but to be honest i dont see the software to back it up (on desktop pc's anyway) there just starting to really use quad's

AMD mighht as well be dead as intel have laready developed new cpu for future

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Bridge_(microarchitecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Bridge_%28microarchitecture))

already developping nahelem sucsessor
and planning realeasinb new cpu with new technology advancements meaning new sockets (rams and even requiring new gpu) every 2 years
intel are destrying cpu market
if this is case u better of renewing your pc every 5 years (by the time u got new rig intel have another cpu out lol)

technology advancement is good but sometimes is can be counter affective
intel need to re think thiere marketing and slow down which also bring them a healthy profit becouse avarage pc user is not going to buy cpu every 2 years
(unless his filthy rich)

Switching sockets too often will bite intel in the backside.

Every time I have to spend £100 on a motherboad, that's most of a processor I won't be buying yet.

Essentially for me I think it would mean that I'd skip every other socket, upgrade at the start and end of one socket - skip the next, repeat.

Longer socket lifetime is better for the chip makers in sales terms, not as good for motherboard makers.

Intel work on a tick-tock cycle to prevent another Netburst P4 disaster.

Tick was the new Core architecture with Conroe, Kentsfield, Merom
Tock was the 45nm Wolfdale/Yorkfields and 800/1066FSB Centrino platform.

The next tick is Nehalem and I suppose depending on what kind of competition Intel will get from AMD will determine how long LGA1366 will last for.
