Hi guys,

I'm doing an experiment at work with a dell base unit.

I am looking to turn it in to a mini-server. The specs of the machine are P4 2.0, 768mb ram and 40gb hard drive.

I'm after some software that will give us file shares and DNS server.

I really want something with a GUI so that it's easy for us to use. I have thought about Windows server but that may give us licencing issues, so that leaves Linux.

I have tried downloading Ubuntu Server but that has no Gui...

Any ideas?

Any linux will act as a webserver, download the desktop ubuntu, and it can be configured to act as a server.

I recommend Debian for a server system.

On any linux OS you can install a GUI. And on any linux OS you can install a basic server.

Debian offers good support for both.

Jon.

2 I have tried are FreeNAS and openfiler.

Out of the 2 i prefered FreeNAS as it was nicer. Both small and easy to install

Windows Server still cannot be beaten for ease - It's my weapon of choice!

Linux has it's place, mainly for low-footprint servers doing really simple stuff.
