View Full Version : Flashing screen/reboots?
Machine I recently built has been having probs since new which I have not been able to sort out. When booting up it gets to the login screen and sometimes screen flashes to black. After login the desktop always flashes to black screen , usually twice as if the graphics are trying to stabilise. It is Geforce6150-nforce430 chipset which seem to have some sort of disagreement with the nvidia drivers and forceware supplied. I have uninstalled froceware and nvidia firewall but no change. If I leave the machine on for any length of time it comes up with the WIndows Has Recovered From A serious Error dialogue with the following codes:
BCCode : 9c
BCP1 : 00000004
BCP2 : 80545FF0
BCP3 : B2000000
BCP4 : 00070F0F
OS Ver : 5_1_2600
SP 2_0
Product 256_1
Setup is as follows:
Foxconn (Winfast) 6150K8MA mobo
AMD athlon64 3200
512MB DDR400
Seagate Barracuda ST3120813AS SATA HDD
Medion MD5042 OC TFT monitor
Pioneer DVD RW DVR-107D
Internal USB Card Reader
Was rebooting spontanaeously occasionally before I removed Nvidia forceware. Any thoughts anyone - apart from this it works like a dream!
Have you tried removing the Onboard Graphics Driver and downloading them from Nvidia's site?
www.Nvidia.com
If the computer is randomly restarting, do this.
[Right Click \"My Computer\"] [Properties] [Advanced TAB]
[Startup & Recovery Settings] [Untick Automatically Restart]
Now if it happens again, instead of restarting it will throw up a Blue Screen with an error code.
Something like 0x0000008e. Make a note of the code and post it on here, if it happens
Thanks for prompt reply Belso, have been running with the automatic restart off since built it and not one BSOD yet, just resarts which is annoying as no clues as to why it reboots. Since removed forceware and Nvidia firewall only happens when unattended (will change settings so it doesn't go to sleep) or if kids are playing on Petz 5 which they love but I could cheerfully use as a frisbee!
Trying new drivers from Nvidia (thought I had done that already but no sign of the download anywhere - must have dreamed it!) Will keep you posted.
Keep Smiling, Kev.
What psu are you using? Checked the power rails? Or temps?
PSU is 450W Winpower. Voltages VCore = 1.40V, +3.3 = 3.31V, +5 = 5.13V, +12 = 12.28V. CPU is presently running at 26C and system at 32C (no idea where sensor is for that). Never used this PSU before but should be adequate for this setup, not intending to OC it or game seriously.
Power rails all seem ok as do the temps.
What about the memory? Have you tried running memtest or something similar?
Thanks Mac, have replaced drivers for graphics and so far no reboots, memtest shows ok on short test but will let it run overnight. CPU temp settled at 35c under load with memtest running. Screen still doing the flashy thing at start up. Strangely it was also doing it if I deleted a file but just tried that and it seemed happy enough. Just concerned that this is a symptom of a prob with mobo that will show itself later. Also seems a shame to have a built in firewall and be unable to use it although I've always been OK with Zone Alarm up to now. Have noticed posts on other boards regarding problems with Nvidia firewall corrupting downloads and causing general mayhem.
Still can't work out why is rebooting and not giving me BSOD.
Nvidia firewall is a real pain i'd switch it off if i were you (and i have) as it stops you accessing certain websites completely, and no i don't mean dodgy sites either just normal run of the mill sites like a pc hardware retailer that i occasionally use for one???
So your pc is still rebooting? And your not getting a Blue Screen?
Which sounds to me like a hardware fault:
Next time your in WIndows give this program a run.

Run the Burn In Test 5 times. It will test your hardware.
Hi Mac - you're up and about early! Didn't notice it preventing me accessing anything but I didn't run it for long. I tried it with Sheilds Up from Steve Gibson's site and more ports showed up than I was happy with. ZA stealths them and is easier to use so I went back to it. I only use Firefox as a browser (more sites work with it these days) and have had no probs with virii since I started with it.
Memtest ran all night and shows ok temps this morning 32C so all ok there. Would be nice to hear from someone else who has one of these boards to see if theirs does the same as mine. The screen goes black for a second or so and then display comes back. So far no reboots - have disabled logon after screensaver.
Keep smiling!
So is there an actual problem apart from the fact the screen flashes black on startup?
Because my work pc does that :o
What mobo is it? I have something similar by the sound of it in my net pc, Asus cvm or something like that can't check atm as i am at work (the reason i was up @ 7am  )
Have not had a reboot since renewing graphics drivers AND disabling logon after screensaver. Wasn't happening all the time so keeping fingers crossed. When it was happening it would lock up for a few seconds and then go straight to reboot even though reboot automatically disabled. Have seen this on other machines with XP Pro and assumed is another bug of some sort. Will run Burn In later and see what happens.
Mac - board is Foxconn (Winfast) 6150K8MA mobo (full set up in 1st post) done a bit of Googling on this and it seems that K8 boards generally have some of their own little foibles and peculiarities so that could explain the flashing display thing. If that is all it is I'm happy to live with it but as I said its a new set up an was concerned in case it was a symptom of a bigger problem.
Must learn to reread the 1st post from time to time, fingers crossed you got it sorted mate.
Sounds sorted.
No need for the Sisandra test really. Just sounds like a case of DDDDDDDDDDodgy Drivers
Thanks for your help guys, seems to be ok, keeping fingers crossed. Until I looked for the D/L I would have sworn I'd updated drivers - do you know of freeware mem test I can run on ME! I'll have to buy you a beer next time I'm in Ipswich B! Sorry Mac, never seem to get as far as Northants but you deserve one as well.
Keep Smiling! :-)
BTW ran Sandra and she didn't come up with anything untoward. Had the prog on my old steam powered 400Mhz machine but hadn't copied it over.
Thanks again guys.
:D :D :D
Glad you got it sorted mate.
