hello! im running a wireless network via a DG834T router. the two problem computers are both running vista ultimate and are both connected by wireless. neither copy will see the other computer but will show up on the network map. they are both in the sae workgroup, network is private on both and password protected sharing is disabled. all im trying to do is share the printer from one computer to another. printer sharing is also on. one time my pc showed up on the other but on double click it said something about typing in the wrong name...please help!

I know this is no help. But if someone can get Vista to behaive the way you expect with networking then let me know how! I tried for ages to set up some shared files on my network and gave up.

Vista seems to have ideas about networking which are at odds with my own.

Have you tried looking at your firewall settings?

Disable windows firewall and and firewall you may have, turn on windows printer and file sharing, and make sure they are in the same work group and it should be fine.

Its more likely to be a firewall interfering.

on my netgear router it has an oprion for wireless isolation, this stops wireless devices seeing each other, has yours got the same option?

ok no to the wireless isolation but good call anyway, the option was there. the amazing thing is that ive had my ps3 using my pcs media server before with vista (wow) but now its just being awkward. settings seem to be fine... ps3 spots other pcs media server fine. same settings

soft or hard reboot?

EDIT
soft reboot didnt work. like i said this computer seems to be the problem. ps3 sees office pc fine and can access media server. this one cannot and is not seen on the network by others.

Hoodeddeathman

sure does. on it right now. i suspect a virus and remains of zone alarm. got a virus at one point and it took out zone alarm and then norton 360 when i installed that. zone alarm was manualy deleted but norton 360 cant be. that a possibility?

hmm? i dont know how to clean up the splattered remains. any ideas? promgram files one is gone. still there on security center as out of date tho.
EDIT found true vector service on automatic and system32\zonelabs
access denied safe mode?

possibly, set the service to disable and reboot.

See if you can delete then, you may have to go into regedit and search for traces left there too.

Maybe I am tempting fate, but I have been using nat routers for about 6 years with just xpsp2/vista firewalls and so far I have never had any issues with hacking.

I subscripe to the NAT router and windows firewall school of thinking too. 2 Years and no viruses.

Zonealarm + Networks = Upside Down Banana!

I would advise stripping zonealarm out as much as you can. And norton? I would get rid of that too and just stick with the windows firewall. You know what...honestly I would just format the pc right now :|

strange that, coz thats my normal fix for those who have issue with zone alarm, I know one person who some who managed to get zone alarm to lock him out of MS word, never did find out how.

Norton 360 firewall:mad:

Took me a day to get round it!

Make sure all firewalls etc are off.

Try to ping eachother to see if you get anything back..

Have you a spare nic?

adding a nic should bypass the firewall (if that is the issue, and I beleive it is) due to it being a new network.

Hoodeddeathman

nic? no need. disabled other 2 wired but not plugged in connections and also found a part of zone alarm with the connections. after disabling this zone alarm component that was left behind ive been able to access my media servers and my torrent downloading works proporly now. Thanks for all your help guys! the Za component was in the connection options along with ivp4 etc...
