Does it work outside?

I've just invested in a Corsair 650w PSU. Do these things work, ie the fan, if you simply plug them in or do they need to be wired up to the computer?
If the fan is supposed to work simply by plugging it in I've been sent a duff one.

you have to short a couple of the wires in the multi plug to get it to power up

That'll definitely work, and its a good way of testing PSUs.. Just be a little bit careful as some PSUs need a load on them (something plugged in) otherwise bad things can happen.. so just plug in a cdrom and a coupla fans or something and you should be ok..
