Hi hi hi there!!

I've decided to spend some time this summer building and making use of a decent pc so....

There are a few components that I wish to include in my pc but I am asking for some help and advice from everyone here to make my decisions on the rest of the components!!

I'm going to start with the processor. I would like to take advantage of the Q6600. The price is ideal and the power is incredible! I won't need to upgrade for quite some time and so i'm thinking this is a no-brainer for me :)

Graphics card. I've been having a look round at the graphics cards on offer at the moment and a few cards have caught my eye. I've come to the conclusion that an SLI setup making use of two 9600GT cards would offer the best value for money and would also last me a fair while before the need to upgrade.

I don't need a monitor at present but may purchase a new one in the future.

So i was wondering if there were any components that you personally may reccomend that you know would be comaptible with the Q6600 and an SLI setup for the 9600GT graphics cards....the lower the price tag the better but at present my budget is flexible.

PSU
HDD
Optical drive
Memory
Mobo

and a case i think i can sort out myself :)

Thanks in advance!!

The 9600GT SLi statement is wrong, you would be better with a single 8800GT as SLi doesn't bring high gains at average resolutions, (below 24") and even at larger resolutions it doesn't double performance, and a single 8800GT cost's less. I'd reccomend this bargain! (http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/XFX+GeForce+8800GT+Alpha+Dog+512MB+PCI-E+?productId=31909)

Nice choice on the CPU, very good indeed!

The power supply should not be overlooked, it is one of the most vital components! I'd reccomend any of these, 29383 or 27381

Hard drive, samsung spinpoints are cool, fast and reasonably priced, i'd go for a 250GB 24030. That is unless you want more storage?

29919 is regarded as the best burner on the market, or it was anyway...

As for memory, a set of 26802 will do nicely, nice timings at a good price.

28015 Is loved here, many users reccomend it, good board, clear layout and excellent features for it's price bracket

Finally, i'd reccomend an aftermarket cooler just as the OCZ Vendetta 2, even if you aren't overclocking, to help make your system quiter and cooler!

The case, as you say is your choice! I'd reccomend Antec or Cooler Master

Comes to about £480 without a case.

Nice spec, can't argue with that.

Hello! :)

Welcome to Aria!

Sounds like a great spec, and if thats what you want to do you do it! I personally prefur an AMD chip as apposed to a Intel: There (usually) faster, and cheaper to purchase, over Intel. However, if you prefur Intel, I have no right to disrespect your descision.

OK, the PSU. Undoutably, you will a silent one: so how about this? (Quickcode: 27930)

As to the graphics card, dont bother, unless you are willing to pay more than it's worth. You can get just as good performance from the 8000 series. Or, if you still want the 9000 series, wait six months, and the prices will drop dramatically.

The HD? Hmmm... All depends on what you use it for, but a good 250GB hard drive should be more than enough for the typical gamer. (Or maybe you want more perhaps? Anyways, heres a quickcode to a 250GB HD: 30165)

Memory: Typically, having 2GB RAM onboard will be more than enough for Windows XP, but for Windows Vista you might want 4GB RAM. (Quickcode: 26802)

As to a motherboard? Your on your own on that one, sorry. Also ENSURE that your components will fit together, and will work, usually by contacting Aria, giving details and wait for a reply.

Hope thats helped, Chad

They used to be faster, but now, they aren't, not ever cheaper tbh, you can get an E2180 and overclock it to outperform higher priced AMD chips

Terrible, well not terrible, but they supposedly scream under load... far from silent

All the components I, and everybody else list in similiar topics, are always compatable

As to a DVD Drive? How about a DVD+/- RW Drive? I suggest a SATA type: then you dont have to muck around with Slave and Master things. It dosent really matter which type you get, although I do suggest getting a cheap one. Like: (Quickcode: 30634) Which saves to your cost

***P.S. IF YOU HAVE SOME OF THESE COMPONENTS WHICH ARE IN A DISUSED COMPUTER, WHY NOT OBTAIN YOUR COMPONENTS FROM THERE? (LIKE THE CASE, FOR INSTANCE, OR THE OPTICAL DRIVE) ITS CHEAPER!

P.P.S. BE AWARE OF STATIC THAT CAN FRY YOUR COMPONENTS, WHICH HAPPENS WHICH YOU TOUCH A COMPONENT WITHOUT YOUR ANTI-STATIC STRAP. TAKE CARE, AND HOPE THIS HELPS***

i would look for more ram, and possibly a modular psu.

it would fit any standard atx case m8, if you wanted to go smaller you would need a matx motherboard.

Hey guys thanks for the replies!

Peterstoba, that all looks pretty good from my end! The price seems to be around about what i wanted to spend and the spec is awesome!

I have a couple of general questions i wouldn't mind firing at you guys though.

If i were to purchase a single GPU at present and then purchase another same spec card in the future for use in an sli setup, would both cards be compatible with one another or would i have to have two identically branded cards and not just the same spec cards?
The reason i ask this is that i wouldn't mind having an option to upgrade my graphics capabilities for when new software emerges without having to fork out an extra load of cash for a newer higher end model and have to get rid of my older card. Do you guys usually just buy a new card? I'm new to the whole computer build scene so i'm just curious...

I'm probably going to be ending up using vista as my OS also so would you reccomend i take advantage of the higher ram support in vista or is 2gb of ram plenty for gaming and everyday use? I will most likely be working with some 3d modelling software next year so will more ram be helpful?

Thanks!

I am using Vista ultimate x86 on a couple of Pcs with 2gb they both seem to be running fine with no slow downs.

Vista ultimate x64 seems a little slow on 2Gb but not overly so

For you to use Sli both cards have to be the same spec, they can be made by different brands like Asus and EVGA but they need to be the same design. I.e. You can't mix an 8800GT with an 8800GTS.

Generally most people on this forum stick with one card then sell it for a new one when the time comes. In terms of £/Performance Sli always comes out worst unless you manage to find real bargains.

As such we reckon Sli is really only useful for high end gaming rigs for monitors with big resolutions.

Alexnifty thanks for that, i just wanted to know just in case i did choose to use sli and then couldn't find the exact same card as the one i would currently own!

What do you reckon to that?

I'm still debating whether or not to change the monitor (i've decided to get one now :)) but apart from that everything else I am quite happy with.

Good system, i have the monitor, amazing, but the only downside is only one input

extra £3 gets you faste ram?

even if you need to leave half out to install vista i think its somthing you should consider.

Sweet, i've changed the ram now and it happens to be on superspecial...

I'm probably going to buy the components all together in a couple of weeks, i'm doing the sensible thing and waiting for my exams to finish :(

I'll post some pics maybe if i build it and i know where to come if i have any problems!!

Thanks guys!! Peace out!
