My MX3, the ceramic or liquid metal?

With the fenrir I believe you are supposed to use slightly more paste than normal to fill the cracks between the exposed heatpipes and heatsink.
Don't go mad though

Martin

Here's a little tease, and to test the camera settings (I've made them small to save on bandwidth)

The fenrir's a fair bit smaller than I assumed, doesn't weigh as much as I thought either, but that's likely because I've handled a V10 =D.

And the pics of the heatsink are superb, sure you didn't nick them from some marketing gumph on the manufacturers website? :thumb:

The XFX PSU was incredibly heavy, I was quite shocked.
Excellent packaged like, however there's alot of marketing on it.
XFX's packaging really is quite stellar.

The first pic went a slightly messed up due to the sun glaring at the time ;

oh noes, whats with people getting SLI 470 atm, makes me want it too. would have done by now if i didnt have to buy a new PSU to power the things

anyway looking good did i miss who this was for? are you going to be overclocking?

I'll be overclocking yes =D.

Yeah, erm, reckon that'll cause an issue?

DoubleTop
19-03-11, 15:52
there's only one way to find out I suppose. It depends on where the centre of the fans are in relation to each other, and where that little pocket of non air movement is with the "non-dysonesque" bearing fans.

Fans are better at blowing through a heatsink rather than sucking through.
I have the fenrir with gskill ram like that, and I just about managed to get the fenrir on the "right" way round, but it blocks your 1st ram slot. The alternative is turning it 90 degrees to face straight up with the fan on the bottom. This is particularly good if you have a roof fan.
I have seen people use the sucking through technique and they don't end up with a furnace inside, so you may be ok

looks like the Fenrir is mounted the wrong way round matey - spin it 180 degrees so the fan is blowing air through it and out towards the rear exhaust :)

Nope it isn't.
It's one way only =/.

Martin
19-03-11, 16:44
It's a moot point anyways, it won't fit the other way as it blocks both RAM slots...

BigIan88
19-03-11, 16:45
no mate, it only has fan mounts on 1 side.

All you have to do is take the fan off, undo the top mount screws, take it off and turn it around - done :)

Wouldn't fit for the RAM in dual channel.

Here's my spare Antec in the same location as it would be, note how it sits ontop of the RAM, meaning the holes would go over ;

the fan clips are about 2cm taller than the heat sync tower so you should be able to slide the fan up and above the ram mate - I had a similar issue with my Fenrir at first

Should've researched a cooler that fits tbh.

Wouldn't be backwards then.

Martin
19-03-11, 17:56
Stupid idea with that fenrir should have got something that fits.
It's more an issue with the board RAM slots being too close.
I needed something bolt though as I hate push/pins.
The fenrir fit that target.
In hindsight, a T.R.U.E would have been better. There was a cooler I'd have gotten on Aria, but I couldn't use Aria due to lack of paypal.

Priming at like 4.6GHZ, I'll leave it at 4.6GHZ if it's stable, then it's time to clock the 470's.

I think it has to be half pipes, it is in every other heatsink, it's something to do with the liquid inside them I think :S?

cruciate
20-03-11, 10:10
I think yours is updated with some caps over the heatpipes. Shouldn't effect it, just looks better. And as BigIan said, my fins just pull off when you so much as look at them.

In terms of the orientation of the fenrir, if it works like it is then leave it. Incidentally, the shape of the fenrir means that just taking the fan off and seeing how it would look the other way way round isn't entirely representative. You might have more room than you think.

cons = size and fitting problems.

Aye it may do, or does. I guess not having it is one less 'feature' compared the lower priced and similar performing coolers.

While I've only used 3 different mounting systems outside of push-pin ones, i would say the Fenrir was a lot worse than both the H50 and Akasa Freedom Tower (easiest mounting system I've used) to set-up.

Yeah, thats what I would be going for. But I always err on the side of caution. Might press for 4.2GHz.

I didn't say it was needed, but it is something lacking too cheaper coolers, which could be seen as a selling point or not.

And the Titan is stupidly loud under peak conditions.

Each to their own, i guess.

I had mine running on full, folding 24/7 and my temps were rarely over 46C and fan speeds never went higher than 1900rpm or so even thought its rated to go at 2500rpm and it was almost inaudible in my case.

It may not be the perfect cooler for some but its nowhere near as bad as you guys are making it out to be

I3R0K3N7FEET
20-03-11, 13:47
lol indeed, cooler performance if often provided by the fan they come with rather than the performance of the heatsink itself.

i went from a spire thermax 2 to a mega shadow with xigmatek fans in push pull, if i use the stock fan from my thermax 2 my temps drop by around 2 degrees idle and 6 degrees load (stock) but that is because im changing 1400rpm 61 cfm fans for a 2200rpm 90cfm fan.

i mean hey strap 2 of those bad boys on a 212+ and see what happens? i wonder what that significant performance difference looks like afterwards?

also i dont recall saying it is bad, i am saying it is not something i recommend even though it may perform well. imo pay £15-20 for a 212+ or £60 for a DH-14 because the inbetween isnt really worth it. (the troll doesnt count :P)

also i dont recall saying it is bad, i am saying it is not something i recommend even though it may perform well. imo pay £15-20 for a 212+ or £60 for a DH-14 because the inbetween isnt really worth it. (the troll doesnt count :P)

This. I'm using the Fenrir myself now (from NickCPC) but im with BF that it has more con's than pro's - not helped by its pricing.

Its a mid ranged cooler and thus is priced accordingly.

Coolers shouldnt be judged for OEM fans, your 212 reference doesnt come into it as coolers are generally sold and used with the fans provided. That being said - it cools better than the 212 with its single stock fan ;)

Looks very nice. SLi GTX470s are still damn fast. Must be hot though. My old 470 managed a cool 91c on load :O
