View Full Version : 2500k 470 SLI build log =D
Lulwut in Martin Intel and Nvidia shocker :p
http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae22/PrimalAir/WhatIdo.jpg?t=1300531706
Not to fear, it's not mine =D.
Anyways, time to unopen and sort out my camera for decent pictures.
i can vouch for sli 470's monster setup :thumb:
C'mon Martin. Looking forward to this....
:popcorn:
What thermal paste should I go use?
My MX3, the ceramic or liquid metal?
Just getting a shower and I'll get to work =D.
With the fenrir I believe you are supposed to use slightly more paste than normal to fill the cracks between the exposed heatpipes and heatsink.
Don't go mad though
Here's a little tease, and to test the camera settings (I've made them small to save on bandwidth)
The fenrir's a fair bit smaller than I assumed, doesn't weigh as much as I thought either, but that's likely because I've handled a V10 =D.

And the second ;

Knew I should have got 2 gpu's. That looks awesome.
And the pics of the heatsink are superb, sure you didn't nick them from some marketing gumph on the manufacturers website? :thumb:
The XFX PSU was incredibly heavy, I was quite shocked.
Excellent packaged like, however there's alot of marketing on it.
XFX's packaging really is quite stellar.
The first pic went a slightly messed up due to the sun glaring at the time ;

Picture of just the XFX PSU, it really is quite a beaut ;
http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae22/PrimalAir/19032011076.jpg?t=1300537520
And lastly, nicely secured and screwed into the Xigamatek case (Liking the colour scheme) ;

oh noes, whats with people getting SLI 470 atm, makes me want it too. would have done by now if i didnt have to buy a new PSU to power the things
anyway looking good did i miss who this was for? are you going to be overclocking?
I'll be overclocking yes =D.

yeah sli 470's unlocked to 1200mv 900 core per card + i7 950 @ 4.5 ghz 1.5v ht on my watt meter hit 1050 watts during benches :eek:
Such a lovely little case, using 2 antec fans as intakes ;

Time for a picture heavy update. Yes, on one of the pictures of the RAM, my hair is balanced over them :S.
Should have probably chosen a different coloured RAM, oh well, was on offer ;

Not now =D
sweet :) cant wait and see what capstick thinks of it :D
can you detail the airflow plans on that, I'm concerned about too much turbulence having the fan that way on the heatsink, that a "double-exhaust" idea?

Yeah, erm, reckon that'll cause an issue?
there's only one way to find out I suppose. It depends on where the centre of the fans are in relation to each other, and where that little pocket of non air movement is with the "non-dysonesque" bearing fans.
DT.
Fans are better at blowing through a heatsink rather than sucking through.
I have the fenrir with gskill ram like that, and I just about managed to get the fenrir on the "right" way round, but it blocks your 1st ram slot. The alternative is turning it 90 degrees to face straight up with the fan on the bottom. This is particularly good if you have a roof fan.
I have seen people use the sucking through technique and they don't end up with a furnace inside, so you may be ok
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
looks like the Fenrir is mounted the wrong way round matey - spin it 180 degrees so the fan is blowing air through it and out towards the rear exhaust :)
LIking the build and level of detailed pics :) Good stuff and keep it coming! :thumb:
Turning it around would be an absolute PITA.
Turning it around would be an absolute PITA.
is it not like the CM212+ where you can just unclip the fan and put it on the other side?
is it not like the CM212+ where you can just unclip the fan and put it on the other side?
Nope it isn't.
It's one way only =/.
It's a moot point anyways, it won't fit the other way as it blocks both RAM slots...
no mate, it only has fan mounts on 1 side.
All you have to do is take the fan off, undo the top mount screws, take it off and turn it around - done :)

Wouldn't fit for the RAM in dual channel.
aslong as the Ram is in first the clearance looks fine on this photo
http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae22/PrimalAir/19032011106.jpg?t=1300547982
It wouldn't fit anyways.
Here's my spare Antec in the same location as it would be, note how it sits ontop of the RAM, meaning the holes would go over ;

the fan clips are about 2cm taller than the heat sync tower so you should be able to slide the fan up and above the ram mate - I had a similar issue with my Fenrir at first
I don't have that problem ;
http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae22/PrimalAir/19032011123.jpg?t=1300554362
you must have a revised version of the Fenrir - mine has long fan clips and doesnt have the gold pipe tops.
sorry bud
Guess it's the only way it can be :S
Anyways, rig's all up.. Final pictures luls
Last pictures until benchmarks etc ;

Should've researched a cooler that fits tbh.
Wouldn't be backwards then.
Stupid idea with that fenrir should have got something that fits.
It's more an issue with the board RAM slots being too close.
I needed something bolt though as I hate push/pins.
The fenrir fit that target.
In hindsight, a T.R.U.E would have been better. There was a cooler I'd have gotten on Aria, but I couldn't use Aria due to lack of paypal.
Venomous x or a hyper 212 fits.
Venomous x or a hyper 212 fits.
Venomous X wasn't in the budget.
It was maxed out, I went over the budget out of the money I was getting to make the PC anyways to get him an aftermarket cooler anyways :S
Gelid tranquil is cheaper than a fenrir so is hyper 212 it's £15.

Gelid isn't on overclockers is it?
And the hyper212 is push/pin isn't it?
Hyper 212 is bolt through.
Hyper 212 is bolt through.
FML.
Didn't think it was.
Should have went with it.
I mix it up with the TX3 (Which I've used a ton)
Great Build log there mate, everyone seams to be going SLI/CF, think i might get another 6850 :D
Oh well we live and learn.

yeah, bargain prices on 470's atm :thumb:
Stop building better speced PC's than mine pl0x
Priming at like 4.6GHZ, I'll leave it at 4.6GHZ if it's stable, then it's time to clock the 470's.
As much as the fenrir's a pain, if it works, it works.
Anyway I can suspend the spare antec to make it push/pull?
470's should easy hit 800 probably hit wall around with heat an noise at 850 core
My fenrir is weird...
It's supposed to look like ;
http://i.neoseeker.com/neo_image/180440/article/Titan_Fenrir_EVO/angle_thumb.jpg
My pipes don't?
top bits painted gold my fenrir was exactly same
I meant that some pipes are half.
looking at your pictures at top, you mean thinner than one illustrated.

They're not on every other picture of the fenrir.

Thats the one I have mate, it doesnt have the gold tops like the one you used.
I think your version is more practical though as the fins can slide off the top on my version if someone was to pull at it

I think it has to be half pipes, it is in every other heatsink, it's something to do with the liquid inside them I think :S?
I think yours is updated with some caps over the heatpipes. Shouldn't effect it, just looks better. And as BigIan said, my fins just pull off when you so much as look at them.
In terms of the orientation of the fenrir, if it works like it is then leave it. Incidentally, the shape of the fenrir means that just taking the fan off and seeing how it would look the other way way round isn't entirely representative. You might have more room than you think.

Possibly.
But it's working fine, keeping it stable at 4.6GHZ after an hour and a half of prime.

Do you have the Christmas edition? mine are like that

imo the fenrir is overrated, it performs alright but the cons outweigh the pros. i would have suggested the cm 212+
looking great though. wont be wise to overclock.
I think the fenrir is great personally.
And the i5 2500k is low thermals anyway. A moderate overclock should be fine IMO
4.6GHZ was Prime stable at 70~c

I used it for about a year till i got a D14 and I thought it was fantastic - cooled signifcantly better than the 212 I had before it.
What cons are you referring to?

yeah sli 470's unlocked to 1200mv 900 core per card + i7 950 @ 4.5 ghz 1.5v ht on my watt meter hit 1050 watts during benches :eek:

a moderate OC on SB = 4ghz?
cons = size and fitting problems.

No push pull and the crap mounting system, i would guess.

works brilliantly without a pull fan - not the end of the world, the mounting system isnt as bad as others ive used :)

Aye it may do, or does. I guess not having it is one less 'feature' compared the lower priced and similar performing coolers.
While I've only used 3 different mounting systems outside of push-pin ones, i would say the Fenrir was a lot worse than both the H50 and Akasa Freedom Tower (easiest mounting system I've used) to set-up.
a moderate OC on SB = 4ghz?
Yeah, thats what I would be going for. But I always err on the side of caution. Might press for 4.2GHz.
Stable 4.6GHz @70c is good :thumb:
I prefer quieter, so would try to get it late 50's/early 60's but if your happy with the noise then thats great :clap

push pull isnt always needed IMO, performance wise its surprisingly good compared to the lower priced coolers your referring to :)

...
I didn't say it was needed, but it is something lacking too cheaper coolers, which could be seen as a selling point or not.
And the Titan is stupidly loud under peak conditions.
Each to their own, i guess.
I had mine running on full, folding 24/7 and my temps were rarely over 46C and fan speeds never went higher than 1900rpm or so even thought its rated to go at 2500rpm and it was almost inaudible in my case.
It may not be the perfect cooler for some but its nowhere near as bad as you guys are making it out to be
I3R0K3N7FEET
20-03-11, 13:47
lol indeed, cooler performance if often provided by the fan they come with rather than the performance of the heatsink itself.
i went from a spire thermax 2 to a mega shadow with xigmatek fans in push pull, if i use the stock fan from my thermax 2 my temps drop by around 2 degrees idle and 6 degrees load (stock) but that is because im changing 1400rpm 61 cfm fans for a 2200rpm 90cfm fan.
i mean hey strap 2 of those bad boys on a 212+ and see what happens? i wonder what that significant performance difference looks like afterwards?
also i dont recall saying it is bad, i am saying it is not something i recommend even though it may perform well. imo pay £15-20 for a 212+ or £60 for a DH-14 because the inbetween isnt really worth it. (the troll doesnt count :P)

This. I'm using the Fenrir myself now (from NickCPC) but im with BF that it has more con's than pro's - not helped by its pricing.
Its a mid ranged cooler and thus is priced accordingly.
Coolers shouldnt be judged for OEM fans, your 212 reference doesnt come into it as coolers are generally sold and used with the fans provided. That being said - it cools better than the 212 with its single stock fan ;)

Build is looking good martin
will have a proper look tomorrow at college
Looks very nice. SLi GTX470s are still damn fast. Must be hot though. My old 470 managed a cool 91c on load :O
Out everything there I really like the psu, nice to see a bit of design going on there.
