Does anyone know what sort of price tag these cards will have on release. I'm waiting till they come out so I can build a new system, but if I won't be able to afford them then there's no point really.

They are going to be very very expensive, the ati range released at the same time will be a bit slower but around half the price, meaning you could crossfire them and beat a single gforce. GTX280

That sucks, but cheers for letting me know.

The estimates from tech websites put them at:

GTX260: ~$450
GTX280: ~$650

Of course, we'll pay a premium because we're in the UK but we're still a long way off yet.

Looks like I'll be sticking with the 8800 range then, or maybe 9800 if they take a price dip when the new cards come out.

Typical price of new top end gfx has been almost £400 in the past so i wouldn't be suprised if these are priced similarly.

If the specs are true, i would happily pay that much

my money would guess, £275/£325 for the 260 and £375/£425 for the 280 depending on the clocks and bundle.

At launch I'd be expecting an affair very similar to that of the 8800 series launch, where iirc it was around £320 to £365 for the 8800GTS and £410 to £480 for the 8800GTX depending on the bundle and warranty.

edit - beaten to it by marsey, but I'm pretty much on the same wavelength as far as prices are concerned.

I reckon we'll expect the HD 4850 appear at around £150-165 at launch and the 4870 up to around £200-235 with the idea of them eventually slipping into the HD 3800's price bracket.

tbh i dont think they will be as high as the 8800gtx was, amd/ati are squeezing their margins to keep prices as low as pos as its the only way they can compete really and we all know that bang for buck is where the mass market is. they dont have the luxary of being the only dx10 card out this time so it shall be fun to sit back and watch the fanbois cry (from either side :D)

looks like ati are showing their hand on monday :D

as they have already started to ship

From what i read the die for the GTX280 is going to be massive, and with the failure rates from large dies being bigger, they will have an average cost of $150 per GPU, before adding the expensive board, expensive power converters.

Radeon 4870 X2 cards will sell for $499, while the GeForce GTX 260 is likely to debut at $449.

Interesting, so the 4870X2 is a rough match for the 280?

thats their plan m8, they cant match performance core for core so.....add more cores.

Lynx

Yeh but the GTX core is 4 times the size of a single HD series core, meaning very power hungry and very poor on that front.

PeterStoba

Very power hungry and very poor on that front?

Ok it might be power hungry, but most people have adequate power supplies, if not then £60 is nothing when your paying £350 already

But poor on what front?

I am just waiting for a review or 3

High power consumption, two HD series will need less power than the one Gforce according to what ive read, high consumption and die sizes and a bit bus bandwidth that will make it leaky on power, not to mention using 8 pin power connectors, which a lot of people dislike, and also, they will be very expensive.

What HD Series, you can't say 4850 won't need as much as the GTX280 based card, as i said before, you need real information

Well i usually tend to take the inq with a grain of salt, but for once they seem to be making some sense.

NVIDIA STAGED ITS regular editors' day, and once again, we were not invited.

wonder why...

Yeh but the GTX core is 4 times the size of a single HD series core, meaning very power hungry and very poor on that front.

what and 2 smaller cores built on a newwer fab tech wont use more power?

3870 x2 is currently the most power hungry card on the market and that trend will continue with ati's current road map.
