Not really linux or exactly open source, but this is probably the most appropriate category still.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/16/oracle_closes_sun_domain/

It was pretty clear already that Oracle are out to eradicate all traces of sun, seems they are going to stop using the domain too - one of the 100 old domain names on the internet.

Doubt they actually de register the domain of course, it'll probably stay as a permanent redirect to oracle.com.

Oracle sucks :< RIP sun

I've stopped using openoffice now and moved to libreoffice. Apparently apart from rebadging it, oracle have barely touched openoffice, whereas libreoffice is being re-written.

Who's going to buy it when they do? Or are they just going to keep it reserved?

Will be a VERY valuable domain name. I bet they just keep it cos they can

They will just keep it reserved. Costs them around $20 a year or whatever :P.

Even if they are not going to use it, they won't want anyone else to.

True, so will it be redirecting or doing nothing? If its redirecting then its not as bad as I thought

I guess they'd be dumb not to redirect it to oracle.com. Although given how happy they seem to be to eradicate any trace of sun's existence, I wouldn't be surprised if it just sent visitors to a page that simply said 'lol'.
